Both male and female soldiers can apply for a post guarding the tomb, although only three female soldiers to date have been granted the duty. The soldiers must be between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 4 inches tall, and have a waistline no larger than 30 inches. The soldiers who guard the tomb wear the Army dress blue uniform along with a bayonet, a pistol, a ceremonial blue belt, sunglasses, white gloves that are wet to help keep the grip on the bayonet and highly shined black shoes. Soldiers also have a standard winter and inclement weather uniform with additional layers of clothing.

Dante Cindulla Dante Cindulla : As a veteran I served with many different people; different nationalities, religions, sexes and political beliefs. I was priveleged to serve with those that were far better soldiers then myself, honored to have worn the uniform and stand in formation beside men and women willing to give it all for the freedom and rights we enjoy as Americans. We as citizens may not agree with each other on everything, we may vote differently, put our faith in different places and have differing oppinions on the path of this great country. One thing we should have in common though, is the knowledge that without the men and women of our great armed services, this country and your rights would most certainly not be what they are today. We did not get to be the "Land Of The Free and The Home Of The Brave" with out many lives being cut short, much sacrifice and the selfless service of all who served. So as we enjoy BBQ, baseball or even as myself the ability to work on this holiday so that I may provide for family. Remember what this holiday means, take a look at our National cemeterys rows of white crosses, and remember a body lies under each. Look at the tomb of the unknown soldier, Remember our MIAs, teach your children what the Star Spangled Banner means and for those that sacrificed all...teach them to remove thier hat, and put thier hand over thier heart when our Great flag flies, because that flags red stripes are the blood of many willing to give thier all for those they did not ever know, for beliefs they may not have had and faiths they may not understand. Your freedom is not free it came at a cost most of us will never have to pay, and we owe those that paid this debt our respect and HONOR!

Teresa Johnson Teresa Johnson : Gosh, I just have to pinch myself sometimes. I know some amazing people, and I'm just so blessed.

Have a fun-filled, safe, memorable Memorial Day weekend. Would LOVE to be at Arlington on Monday, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - such a tribute, or doing the Bolder Boulder just like old times with the kids. It's also such a family tradition to decorate graves in Blackfoot...I might visit a few cemeteries here on Monday, just because. Bloom where I'm planted, that's the idea.

Judy Bell Holzemer Judy Bell Holzemer :         Just prior to Memorial Day weekend, each year for the past 40 years, the 3rd U.S. Infantry has honored America's fallen heroes by placing American flags before the gravestones and niches of service members buried at Arlington National Cemetery. This tradition is known as "flags in". Every available soldier in the 3rd U.S. Infantry participates in the approximately three-hour ceremony to place flags in front of more than 260,000 gravestones and about 7,300 niches at the cemetery's columbarium. American flags are also placed at the graves of each of the four unknown service men interred at the Tomb of the Unknowns, by the Tomb Sentinels. All flags are removed after Memorial Day before the cemetery is opened to the public.

Kevin Loomis Kevin Loomis : Memorial day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor those lost in the nation's Civil War by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers.

On May 5, 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that:

"The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance, no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit."

During the first celebration of Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery.

By the late 1800s, many communities across the country had begun to celebrate Memorial Day and, after World War I, observances began to honor those who had died in all of America's wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May.

Today, Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Also, it is customary for the president or vice-president to give a speech honoring the contributions of the dead and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend this ceremony annually.
