Spills and thrills in Windsor this week: The 2013 Royal Windsor Horse Show is under way again and it is their 70th anniversary so this year there is a stellar line up of equestrian super stars including three of the four British Olympic Team Gold Medallists from London 2012 - Ben Maher, Nick Skelton, and Peter Charles all have entries for the Show and then you can marvel at the exciting carriage driving where skilled and intrepid teams race horses and period carriages through the grounds at speed. In many ways this sport is a period version of a modern-day RAC Rally – but with no petrol; they are very brave! Set in the beautiful private grounds of Windsor Castle and patronised by Her Majesty The Queen, this is the only show like it in Britain. The Show President is still His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, and he continues to take an active part in the event. Even if you are not a horse enthusiast, the retail therapy on offer here is spectacular. People even attend every year solely to start (and finish) their Christmas shopping! This year, there are over 200 stalls offering a wide range of gifts, jewellery, clothing, fine art, craft and equestrian items in the shopping village and for the gourmets and the hungry, there is also a Food and Drink Festival. Highlights for 2013 also include displays such as the Musical Ride of The Household Cavalry, A Bahrain Arab Horse Display, and The Musical Drive of The King's Troop RHA and the frantic favourite, The DAKS Pony Club Mounted Games, and the hilarious Shetland Pony Grand National. With 4,000 entries and 40,000 visitors this will be a busy weekend.
