Mehr Wissen über TBBT Die Nachnamen der beiden Hauptfiguren lehnen sich an die Nobelpreisträger Robert Hofstadter und Leon Neil Cooper an, die Vornamen gehen auf den US-amerikanischen Schauspieler und Produzenten Sheldon Leonard zurück.[27] Johnny Galecki, Sara Gilbert, Sara Rue und Laurie Metcalf spielten bereits in der Serie Roseanne zusammen. Mayim Bialik und Johnny Galecki spielten gemeinsam in der Serie Blossom (inkl. „erstem Kuss“).[28] 2006 wurde ein erster Pilot der Serie produziert, jedoch nie ausgestrahlt. Aus diesem wurden nur die Rollen Leonard und Sheldon übernommen. Zur ursprünglichen Besetzung gehörten außerdem noch die Kosmetikerin Katie (Amanda Walsh), welche eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit mit Penny aufweist, und Gilda (Iris Bahr), eine Kollegin und Freundin der beiden Hauptfiguren und darüber hinaus eine ehemalige Affäre Sheldons.[29] Mayim Bialik spielt in der Serie eine Neurobiologin. Auch im wahren Leben hat Mayim Bialik einen Doktorgrad. Im Jahr 2008 wurde sie zum Ph.D. in Neurowissenschaften promoviert.[30] Der Vorspann zeigt – beginnend mit dem Urknall – einen chronologischen Schnelldurchlauf durch die Meilensteine der Evolutionsgeschichte. Die Visualisierung ist künstlerisch so gestaltet, dass die Inhalte immer in alle Richtungen weg von der Bildmitte streben (entsprechend der Explosion des Urknalls und der fortwährenden Ausdehnung des Universums). Die einzige Ausnahme in dem Bilderstrom bildet die Einstellung vor dem abschließenden Serienlogo, die statisch die Protagonisten auf der Couch in Leonards und Sheldons WG zeigt. Diese vorletzte Einstellung ist auch die einzige, die einen direkten visuellen Zusammenhang zu den Darstellern herstellt. Der gezeigte Inhalt spiegelt sich im Titelliedtext. Die englischen Folgenbezeichnungen folgen dem Schema „The [Folgenfacette] [wissenschaftlicher Begriff]“. Beispielsweise heißt die vierte Folge, in der Sheldon versucht, Leuchtfische zu erzeugen, „The Luminous Fish Effect“ (wörtlich: Der Leuchtfisch-Effekt). Nach diesem Schema richtet sich die deutsche Folgenbenennung nur selten, manchmal nur halbherzig (Folge 4 heißt im Deutschen „Die Leuchtfisch-Idee“). In den Folgen, in denen dem Schema gefolgt wird, kommt es häufig vor, dass andere Begriffe oder Facetten gewählt werden, bspw. in Folge 8, die im Englischen „The Grasshopper Experiment“ (wörtlich: Das Grasshopper-Experiment) und im Deutschen „Das Lalita-Problem“ heißt. Nur selten wurde der Originaltitel direkt ins Deutsche übersetzt, bspw. in Folge 6, die im Englischen „The Middle Earth Paradigm“ und im Deutschen „Das Mittelerde-Paradigma“ heißt. In Staffel 3 Folge 2 wird die vermeintliche Feldgrille, um die Sheldon und Howard wetten, von Howard im lateinischen Gryllus assimilis genannt, das ist allerdings die Bezeichnung für die Steppengrille. Die lateinische Bezeichnung der Feldgrille lautet Gryllus campestris.
