Her Majesty The Queen has approved the appointment of General Sir Peter Wall as the new Chief of the General Staff, it has been announced today, Thursday 29 July 2010. General Sir Peter Wall KCB CBE ADC Gen General Wall will take over from the current Chief of the General Staff, General Sir David Richards, in September this year. Lieutenant General Sir Nick Parker, currently Deputy Commander International Security Assistance Force - Afghanistan, will take over from General Wall as Commander-in-Chief Land Forces, in the rank of General, in October this year. The Secretary of State for Defence, Dr Liam Fox, said: "I'm absolutely delighted with both of these appointments. We're very lucky to have men of such high calibre at this time."

Laying up of the Fighter Command ensign. Service, Parade and Flypast marks the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Senior Royal figures, Politicians and Civic Dignitaries joined Battle of Britain Veterans and 100s of Worshipers at Westminster Abbey today the 19th September to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Following the service a parade of over 300 serving RAF personnel and a flypast by a Spitfire, Hurricane and 4 Tornado jets brought the event to a close. Members of the Royal Air Force Queen's Colour Squadron formed the Lining Party as newly qualified RAF Search and Rescue pilot Prince William joined his father and the Duchess of Cornwall for the service of thanksgiving and rededication along with Prime Minister David Cameron, Secretary of State for Defence Liam Fox and Chief of the Air Staff Sir Stephen Dalton. In a moving and poignant ceremony the Fighter Command silk Ensign was paraded for the last time before being laid up in the Royal Air

The service is held to remember the courage and comradeship of those on all sides who served their countries during The Great War of 1914 - 18. Dr Fox has been the MP for Woodspring (renamed North Somerset for the 2010 May General Election) since 1992 and was appointed as Shadow Secretary of State for Defence in December 2005. He has visited the UK's Armed Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.Dr Fox was born and raised in East Kilbride, Scotland, and attended the local comprehensive school, St Bride's High School, before going on to study medicine at the University of Glasgow.He worked as a GP before becoming a Member of Parliament and, as well as his career in the NHS, Dr Fox has also worked as a Civilian Army Medical Officer.

A GR4 Tornado from 9 Squadron takes off from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, headed for Operation Herrick in Afghanistan. The UK sent two additional Royal Air Force Tornado jets to Afghanistan, the Defence Secretary announced on a visit to British forces serving there. Dr Liam Fox, on his second visit to Afghanistan since being appointed Secretary of State, confirmed that the two Tornado GR4 aircraft were sent from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, arriving at Kandahar Airfield Thursday 12 August 2010. The deployment followed a request by the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), General David Petraeus, for an increase in air support to provide greater protection to ground forces. The aircraft joined the eight RAF Tornado GR4s already provided to support the multinational pool and boosted flying hours by 25 per cent, or an extra 130 flying hours per month.
