CX2012-0377-07 12 Oct 2012 Comox, British Columbia 19 WING COMOX— Lieutenant-Colonel Jason Kenny, 407 Long Range Patrol (LRP) Squadron (Sqn) Commanding Officer speaks with Parliamentary Secretary, Department of Fisheries and Oceans Randy Kamp on board a CP-140 Aurora during a welcome ceremony following the crew’s return from Operation Driftnet 2012. Canada participated in Operation Driftnet patrols from September 15, 2012 to October 5, 2012. The patrol is part of a collaborative international initiative to deter illegal fishing activity in the North Pacific Ocean. Canada is an active member of the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission, which was established under the Convention for the Conservation of Anadromous Stocks in the North Pacific Ocean. The primary objective is to promote the conservation of the anadromous stocks in the Convention area. Other members include the United States, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Korea, and Japan. The Convention has contributed to the implementation of the UN General Assembly resolution entitled “Large scale pelagic drift-net fishing and its impact on the living marine resources of the world’s ocean and seas†by prohibiting direct fishing for anadromous fish in the high seas areas of the North Pacific Ocean This year, the Canadian Forces, in support of Department of Fisheries and Oceans, contributed a CP-140 Aurora long range surveillance aircraft, providing surveillance to identify and record evidence of illegal fishing activities in the North Pacific Ocean.
