Family Dynamics Dad: you put this one in backwards But I looked as it was the same way I had put it on Muzzy said something about me putting the right on the left, but I wasn't listening Then I helped him put the side on cause I'd done it wrong the first time (the instructions suck) Then he insisted they were upside down Muzzy asked why I said so you can screw into the metal piece on the bottom instead of the middle piece on the glass because you can break the glass screwing into the metal part attached (done that before too) But as I watched him I saw there was no way that the sliding case on the bottom was made for the slider in the top. They were two different and exact pieces So I said: no dad the are on right they won't fit on the bottom Dad: you want to help!? Me: we'll I'm just saying Mom: help him!! Me: oh I thought he was telling me to shut up So I went over and used my hands but he didn't need them But to appease my mother I hovered with my unhelpful hands. And while I hovered I saw for certain that it wouldn't work if he changed them around So I said so "Do you want to do this?" he asked "But" "Do you want to do this?" Silence So he gets all frustrated cause he can't get the side off "Help him" said Muzzy So I hand him a butter knife "It's on the right way, anyway," I say as I watch him take off the side and hear him say "no it's not!!" I'm not gonna argue about it -- if he wants to do it the hard way, so fine but I was trying to save him some troubles, let him learn the hard way, I figure, I always do & I'm no worse for wear So he takes them off, realizes I was right as I look all around the house for the vacuum that he's half a foot from So while I'm trying to still remove the door jamb piece I previously couldn't fully take off when I fixed the front door so that it would latch, Muzzy is attempting to lift the air conditioner to the window, after helping Daddy-0 replace the pieces that he had taken off although they were previously installed correctly as I had stated several times. And he tells me to go over and lift the air conditioner and tells mom "because I can do it by myself" I tell Muzzy, "he said you're too old to lift the air conditioner" as I put the screwdriver on the kitchen table. She got all back-talky and wouldn't let me do it, had to help on the other side to lift it up But then it wouldn't fit in right. I said, "it's this metal piece in the middle that's on backwards" Dad says, "no it isn't!" And he fiddles around a bit and I say "it's the metal piece, right here, that's on backwards" "No it isn't, baby" my dad says as if I'm an infant who knows nothing about much of anything "Okay, dad" and I walk away to find something else to do He tells Muzzy to bring it back in & hold it I go over and tell her in low overtones "this piece is the lip that catches it from falling out of the window and these sides are supposed to slide open to here in this area. But they can't cause the lip is on backwards but he says it isn't so good luck with that" and I patted her on the back and walked away. He comes in and switches the lip around, because as I said, it was on backwards Then he tells me to gather my keys up and go outside. Then we proceed to move the broken car to under the shade trees -- in the beginning of summer. I didn't say anything. It was nice to have everything moved out of the way. And of the two we moved under there, one does work, so I can move it if I wish to. The shade trees have bugs in them that drip sticky stuff on the windshields anyway. Then he left and mom helped me put the air conditioner in my room and the side wings were installed incorrectly -- but they have been for as long as I've used it -- five years now. He didn't do that tho -- it was the ex-husband. We just put it in incorrectly, just as its always been done. Maybe we're not "perfect" but at least we can cope successfully with our dysfunctions. I do love my family. And I am thankful.

Scott Hubbard Plans to Revive Defunct Kepler Space Telescope http://www.redorbit.com/news/space/1112849133/scientist-wants-to-revive-kepler-telescope-051613/ NASA announced yesterday that its Kepler space telescope is stuck in standby mode, but one professor is already coming up with ideas to try and revive the observatory. Scott Hubbard, a consulting professor of aeronautics and astronautics, helped guide the Kepler mission when he served as director of NASA Ames Research Center. He has devised a few plans for the space agency that could potentially help bring the planet-hunting spacecraft back to life. NASA said its Kepler spacecraft was sitting in safe mode, possibly putting an end to its mission. The observatory went into a Thruster-Controlled Safe Mode and the space agency hasn't been too optimistic about being able to bring it back online. Hubbard said the Kepler spacecraft's photo-detector array registers more than 100,000 stars at a time, and in order to detect exoplanets, it must remain extremely steady so that the stars do not wander across the optics. At least three of Kepler's four gyroscope-like reaction wheels need to be functioning to keep Kepler stable, but the spacecraft currently only has two wheels left. “There are two possible ways to salvage the spacecraft that I'm aware of,” Hubbard said. “One is that they could try turning back on the reaction wheel that they shut off a year ago. It was putting metal on metal, and the friction was interfering with its operation, so you could see if the lubricant that is in there, having sat quietly, has redistributed itself, and maybe it will work.” He said the other scheme involves using thrusters and the solar pressure exerted on the solar panels to try and act as a third reaction wheel and provide additional pointing stability. “I haven't investigated it, but my impression is that it would require sending a lot more operational commands to the spacecraft,” the professor added. Some believe that if Kepler isn't brought back to full functionality, there is still a chance it could be used to detect asteroids. Hubbard, however, says that might be jumping the gun. “Whether or not it could function as a detector for asteroids is something that would have to be studied, but since it wasn't built as a camera, I would say that I'm skeptical. That said, certainly between Ames Research Center and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, they've got the best people in the world working on it,” he said. For now, scientists will need to rely on the year-and-a-half's worth of data from the Kepler mission that's still waiting for analysis. “It's important to make clear, though, that in the original queue of missions aimed at finding life elsewhere, a mission like Kepler was a survey mission to establish the statistical frequency of whether these planets are rare or common. It lived the length of its prime mission, and was extremely successful during that time at achieving this goal,” Hubbard said. “It has paved the way for additional missions, such as TESS – Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite – and TPF – Terrestrial Planet Finder – which will continue the search for Earth-like exoplanets in the near future.”

Martin wisely exploits opening at Catalunya By Andrew Hood http://velonews.competitor.com/2013/03/analysis/martin-wisely-exploits-opening-at-catalunya_278603 Sometimes the cycling gods giveth, and sometimes they taketh away. Garmin-Sharp rider Daniel Martin lived both extremes of cycling's crude justice over the past two days at the Volta a Catalunya. In Wednesday's first of two mountain stages, Martin's tank was empty and the Irishman couldn't follow the winning moves. Some 24 hours later, the 26-year-old was celebrating the doblete with a stage victory and a surge into the overall leader's jersey. With Movistar and Sky set to duel up the final “especial” 14km climb on the Port Ainé, Martin's success was highly unexpected. “I am more surprised than anyone,” Martin said after the stage. “Winning out of a long breakaway is never easy. After having a bad day [Wednesday], I just gave everything. I never expected to take the lead.” A few things stacked up in his favor and he coolly exploited them to his advantage. Martin, Hesjedal make the breakaway First off, he wisely snuck into the day's main breakaway. With 23 riders and nearly all the major teams represented, Martin was the best placed, at ninth overall and 30 seconds back. Martin rode comfortably in the group without taking too many pulls in the 217km, six-climb stage thanks to the presence of Garmin teammate and reigning Giro d'Italia champion Ryder Hesjedal. “I had Ryder in the break with me. This victory is really thanks to him, because he was pulling for me all day and I really didn't have to take any pulls at all in the group,” Martin said. “He's the Giro champion and he's stronger than me. To have him pull for me made the difference later.” Valverde crashes out of Catalunya Second and most important was the crash involving overnight leader Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), which came at about the halfway point of the race. Movistar was keeping the breakaway on a short leash of 2:30 when disaster struck. Valverde and Movistar teammate Eros Capecchi slid out on gravel on a steep, technical descent off an unrated climb at about 120km. Both later abandoned, but in a gesture of solidarity, the pack, led by Sky and Katusha, eased up on the gas to wait to see if Valverde could regain contact. That was in sharp contrast to last year's Vuelta a España, when Sky and Katusha pushed gas pedal when Valverde crashed while wearing the leader's jersey under very different circumstances. Meanwhile, as the pack slowed the chase, the gap to the leading breakaway expanded again to more than four minutes. Martin admitted that his double dose of success came thanks in part to Valverde's bad luck. “Suddenly we had two minutes extra. I needed those two extra minutes,” Martin said. “I hate to think I took the jersey because he crashed, that's not how I want to take it. I hope he's ok.” Valverde was not seriously injured, but his untimely crash was key to Martin's unlikely breakaway success. The early exit of Valverde and key helper Capecchi completely derailed Movistar's strategy. Rather than riding to defend Valverde's leader's jersey, the team readjusted to try and position Wednesday's stage winner Nairo Quintana, who started sixth, at 26 seconds back. Valverde's crash also put pressure on Sky to take control of the race, a shift that would later play out in the closing kilometers. By the time Martin hit the final 14km climb, it was a battle of attrition. Fighting to the finish with no time checks Martin fought all the way to the line, defending a one-minute gap to the top GC contenders until Quintana and Joaquim Rodríguez (Katusha) surged in the final 3km. “I know I was going pretty slow in those last two kilometers,” Martin said. “At first, I was only thinking about the stage. My last time check came with 5km to go. I didn't start banking on the win until 100 meters to go.” Going up the final climb, Sky lined it up for Bradley Wiggins, who started the day second, at four seconds back. Dario Cataldo and Rigoberto Urán set a steady pace, but Martin had the legs to defend his gap. Many expected Sky to rail it home to set up Wiggins, but Martin stubbornly held on and Wiggins ended up losing ground, dropping to fourth when he was unable to react to the late attacks by Quintana and Rodríguez. There was no finish-line reaction from Wiggins, but Sky director Marcus Ljungqvist said the Valverde crash changed the dynamics of the stage. “Valverde crashed out and it was then up to us to take control. We slowed down for Valverde, so the breakaway got more time — nearly 4:30 — but we managed to bring it back to about 1:20,” Ljungqvist said. “But then Martin rode so well on the last climb and we couldn't catch him. It is going to be difficult to challenge for the general classification, but second place is still up for grabs. The race is not over and we are not giving up.” Hesjedal, making his season debut at the Catalunya tour, told Spanish website Pasadodevolta.com that the plan was to break up the race and defend Martin's winning tactic. “It could be true that we benefited from Valverde's crash, but we didn't know what was going on behind us,” Hesjedal said. “We kept racing the same and Valverde's crash doesn't make us feel any less proud of the work Martin and I did. We weren't afraid to go for it.” When the dust settled along the snow-lined race route, Martin had enough in the tank to hold off a fast-charging Rodríguez by 36 seconds. Martin enters the final three days of racing holding a slender, 10-second lead over Rodríguez, with 32 seconds over Quintana and 36 over Wiggins. “I was surprised by Martin,” Rodríguez said. “The differences are still small. There are three more stages. Anything could happen.” Another factor could come into play in the closing days. Finish-line bonuses of 10 seconds for the winner will be back in contention in the final three stages. The bonuses were not applied Wednesday and Thursday, but will be in play on the hilltop finale at Montjuic in Rodríguez's hometown of Barcelona on Sunday. As Rodríguez said, and Thursday's stage confirmed yet again, anything can happen in cycling. #procycling #uciworldtour #voltaacatalunya #garminsharp #DanMartin

Early Morning Rituals Of A Spotless Mind #2 of my personal favourites of 2012 We're almost at the end. It was a toss up between this photo and the one I picked for number one. This photo was taken on the same morning as one of my earlier shots at the lake. The morning was so utterly peaceful and calm, that I hated to break it's spell by leaving. For the longest time it was just me and this seagull sitting on the shore, watching the mist rise off the water. It is in moments like these, of absolute quiet and calm, that you can let yourself open up and feel the air around you. It brings your emotions to the surface and acts like a soothing balm, making you realize that you have been holding things deep down, where they have no business being. One of the finest moments of this year, and I feel so lucky to have had my camera with me that day, to capture it, and bring it back to me each and every time I see the photos. That's one of the things I like best about photography. No matter where you are or what you are doing, taking that photo acts like an instant recall to bring you back there at a moment's notice, never to be forgotten.

CAMEL POSE is one of the more advanced back bends, but you can do it in stages. It's a wonderful way to invigorate your day and combat slumping. Always start with easier back bends to see how your back is feeling, flexing the vertebrae gradually. Go through these poses: Cat, Cow, Sphinx, Cobra, and Bridge, taking breaks in Child's Pose. Prepare by placing your knees hip distance apart and your toes up on the floor. Press your hands into your lower back and push the hips forward, then bring your hands up to the middle of your back and press your chest is open to the sky. Keep looking forward if your neck is weak. Then stretch one hand up and see if you can reach one ankle, bring it back to your waist and do the other side. You can use blocks here if you can't reach your feet. If you feel comfortable put both hands down. Try not to lean back -the hips should be over the knees. If you feel any constriction in the lower back, stop and slowly go into Child's Pose until your back is released.
