Picasa I've been reading the most recent volumes of the Mysterious Girlfriend X manga and even after having not read it for a while, I still found myself totally hooked on it. I absolutely love this series but what I hear from others is mixed. Some people absolutely adore it, and some people think it is pretty difficult to enjoy or is just plain gross. I think that Mysterious Girlfriend X is often misunderstood because it is portraying a very common and mundane thing, but doing so in a very odd way. What I think NazoKano X is really about is a young boy's experiences with his first girlfriend and, to a lesser extent, a young girl's experiences with her first boyfriend. The story is told largely from Tsubaki's perspective and one of the major themes in the story is how he and Urabe come to understand each other and weave their thoughts, emotions, and desire together to create a relationship that is uniquely theirs. When you look at it this way, I think it is easy to see that the "bond of drool" that they share is just an exaggerated story-telling device, meant to remix the same old romantic themes and turn them on their head to create an interesting story. When I look past the drool and read the stories, what I feel is exactly what it was like to start dating my first girlfriend. Everything was new and mysterious and there were so many feelings I'd never experienced before. I didn't know what to expect, even with other friends around me to serve as a sort of example. And her and I did create our own little rituals and things; there was nothing nearly as extreme as exchanging drool, but I think you get the picture. Tsubaki and Urabe both have their desires and their fantasies, as well as their hopes and expectations for their relationship with each other. Many of the chapters are about one or both of them finding new and creative ways of expressing that. Tsubaki often looks to his friend Ueno and his girlfriend Oka as a sort of model, and then tries to apply that to Urabe (often with disastrous but sometimes with surprisingly sweet results). Urabe often treads the line (sometimes with prodding from Oka), finding new and creative ways of expressing both her love of and desire for Tsubaki, but trying always not to let herself go too far. While Tsubaki starts collecting picture books of a pop idol because she looks very much like Urabe (except perhaps much more willing to smile for the camera), Urabe cuts them up with her incredible scissor techniques because deep down she resents the idea that she is interchangeable with a different girl that happens to look just like her. This whole idea is touched on much later, when said pop idol actually appears and makes a Prince-and-Pauper-like deal with Urabe. Much of anime deals with finding out you love someone and confessing your feelings, but very little out there takes the time to flesh out how that relationship actually functions, day to day. Mysterious Girlfriend X does this very well, and that's why I love it so much. tl;dr - if you love romantic stuff and you did not watch Mysterious Girlfriend X, see it right now. Avert your eyes from the drool if you must -- the rest is excellent stuff!
