Valerie Garland-Christian Valerie Garland-Christian :         Who, besides me, loves this show, "Welcome Back Kotter"? On the Me TV Network, (Memorable Entertainment Television), they started airing this program again about two weeks ago. I have so enjoyed watching and laughing along to the opening and closing jokes of Gabe Kaplan. I have enjoyed seeing a very young John Travolta say, "Up your nose with a rubber hose". I have loved seeing Freddy "Boom Boom" Washington, Rosalie "Hotsy Totsy", Arnold Horshak, and Juan Epstein join in all the shenanigans of the famous "Sweathogs" of James Buchanan High. Thoughts, anyone?

Learn Our History Learn Our History : Learn Our History Today: On April 23, 1791, U.S. President James Buchanan was born near Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. The son of wealthy Scottish and Irish immigrants, Buchanan began his political career as a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature in 1814. Later he was elected to U.S. House of Representatives, serving for five terms until 1831, at which point he was appointed as the United States’ Minister to Russia by President Andrew Jackson.

Upon returning from Russia, Buchanan would in the following years serve in many more political positions from Secretary of State to Minister to Great Britain, before being elected President in 1856. Almost as soon as he had taken office he became embroiled in the bitter political conflict over the issue of slavery, one that he was quickly revealed to be quite out of touch with. He encouraged the Supreme Court to rule in the famous and controversial Dred Scott case that slavery had no right to be outlawed, believing that the nation would take the courts decision as the final word and the debate over slavery would subside.

Nothing was farther from the truth, with the Dred Scott Decision only serving to fan the flames on both sides. In addition, as southern states began to secede from the Union he reacted with great passivity, not fighting their actions whatsoever. Finally his weak government allowed the southern states to seize many a government arsenal with hardly a shot being fired. After a disastrous four years as President, during which the United States had been broken up into two separate nations and thrown into violent Civil War, James Buchanan retired to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, leaving Abraham Lincoln to essentially clean up his mess. He would later die in 1868.

Rick Collin Rick Collin : American President: James Buchanan     Today is the 223rd birthday of our 15th President, born Apr. 23, 1791 in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania. James Buchanan is our only Chief Executive to have been born in the Keystone State, and the only one to never marry. He was in the White House during the final tumultuous years just before the Civil War (1857-61). Despite his considerable experience (member of the U.S. House and Senate, U.S. Minister to Russia and Great Britain, and Secretary of State), he was unable to avert the disaster. He walked a tightrope in trying to appease the North and the South. He was President when southern states began leaving the Union to form the Confederacy, the first of them being South Carolina in Dec. 1860, four months before Buchanan's term ended. Six more states quickly followed on Buchanan's watch -- Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Buchanan believed that states did not have the right to leave the Union, but also believed the federal government did not have the legal authority to stop them. His proposed compromises went nowhere, and matters were at a stalemate when he turned the Presidency over to Abraham Lincoln Mar. 4, 1861. Buchanan told Lincoln at that time: "Sir, if you are as happy in entering the White House as I shall feel on returning to Wheatland (Pennsylvania), you are a happy man indeed." He lived another 7 years, dying at the age of 77 on June 1, 1868.
