_ Morro de São Paulo - State of Bahia - Brazil_

This is the view from the zip line overlooking first beach on the island of Morro de Sao Paulo. It is a bit of a hike to get up to this spot since most of the hostels are on the other side of the island, but the view is totally worth it. Behind where I was standing to get this shot is a big white lighthouse that crowns the highest point on the island, and beyond that another lookout on the other side. Morro really is a beautiful place – there were so many things to see, so many beautiful places to explore, and lots of good food to eat!

Race Report 2015 Tejas Trails Nueces 50 mile race, Camp Eagle, Rocksprings, TX

This is my first 50 mile ultrarunning race (and first race re-cap).  I didn't know anything about the race course, and there are only a handful of race reports I could find describing it, so I though I'd put down what I went through.  I'm fairly new to running these distances (maybe a year and half now?) and I usually finish in the last third of the pack.

This race turned out to be very cold and wet.  Not ideal for a first attempt at a 50 miler.  I opted to stay at one of the 'hostel' beds at Camp Eagle, so I drove out the day before.  Glad I did, since the roads iced over that evening, temps dropping to 26-27 degrees.  When I arrived, there was only one other guy in the hostel/bunk room, (Anthony, who ended up winning.  great job man!), so we hung out and chatted a bit, ate at the buffet they offered, and turned in early.  A couple of guys from San Antonio got in around 1:30am having left somewhere around 8pm (they got stuck on I-10 for a few hours due to a roll-over, I believe one of them was Lorenzo?, who was 3rd place), and they had to drive very slow due to icy roads.  The 4 am weather was below freezing, and there was a fog/mist everywhere, with ice on a few spots on the course, mainly the bridges.  It was very cold, and the light mist/fog slowly soaked everything.  Which was a problem.  Gloves, hats, socks...became wet and cold.  Instead of keeping you warm it seemed to suck out body heat.  But I wasn't going to let cold weather derail this race.  I had put too much time into training for it.  I had generally followed the training plan for a 50 mi. race in Hal Koerner's book 'Field Guide to Ultrarunning', but I took 2 days off during the week instead of 1 (ok, occasionally 3 days after some of the longer runs).  I credit the training plan for preparing me for this distance, especially the long weekend runs and the back-to-back 15 or 25 miler sat/sun runs.

After a poor nights sleep, and some debating about if I should wear long running tights or shorts, the race went off without a hitch at 5am.  Anthony convinced me to wear the shorts because that is what I primarily trained in.  Turned out to be a good choice, as everything got soaked anyway.  Up top was a Solomon long sleeve, cold-weather running shirt and a Brooks ultralight rain jacket over it, which helped tremendously in keeping my core body temp up.  53 people had signed up, but only 46 actually made it out, with 37 finishing.  The first part of the of the race is an uphill climb on some nice single track, with some nice gentle downhill single track with switchbacks.  I could have run this uphill part, but with the race just starting out, and being unfamiliar with the course I opted to hard-hike it.  Seemed like most everyone around me did the same thing.  After some uphills through some loose rock, you find yourself running along the side of a hill, lots of rolling ups and downs which was a mix of dirt, roots, and rocks. I hit the Texas aid station, and then headed out with 3 other guys around me.  The section after the Texas aid station seemed run-able at first, but after about a half mile you're met with a very steep, rocky uphill climb which seems to take forever.  This part was not run-able for me, although I'm sure the more experienced could run a good chunk of it.  My watch said my mile split was around 21 minutes on this section.  But after you get to the top you are rewarded with a nice run along a jeep road, passing a huge zip-line, and a nice long downhill section.  I was able to open it up a bit here, putting in some 10 min miles.  The jeep road turns into some more nice single track with switchbacks, and you eventually arrive at the Wall aid station.  By this point the sun was coming up, so I dropped my headlamp in my drop bag and headed out.

Just after the Wall aid station you cross a pretty cool suspension bridge (the one in the pic on the Tejas Trails website).  I almost took a spill, as the bridge was completely iced over.  A skate/shuffle is a better description.  After running along some flat-stone sections along the side of the river, a few small hills up and down, you're met with a very long, fairly steep uphill.  Again, I had to hard-hike these sections.  There are false tops at various points along the uphill drudgery, with small flat sections you can run.  But then you turn a corner and bamb! another steep uphill section.  You eventually get to the windmill, which more or less marks the end of the climbing.  The climbing is again rewarded, with a very long, not too rocky, downhill jeep road that seems to go on for at least a mile.  Best part of the run for me.

Once at the bottom, a quick steep uphill section, and then you're rolling up and down for a little bit before getting back to the Texas aid station.  The race directors had marked the course very clearly, so no issues for me and I did not get turned around.  In the last section you run along some single track down towards the camp.  You cross over the river on some rocks, then back over again on a floating bridge (iced over), and slowly work your way back along the river rock towards the start/finish line.  You can see the start/finish pavilion at one point, only to find that you are not yet near the finish line.  After climbing some wooden steps, and then over another pretty cool suspension bridge (this one goes over the road as you come in, which was also completely iced over), you are sent out for a short section to get in the necessary miles.  This part is some of the best single track sections in the race.  Nice gentle downhill switchbacks that were just a blast to run on.  Easy 10 min miles here right before finishing the first loop.  After crossing over the open field at the main camp, you arrive back at the start.

First loop took me just under 3-1/2 hrs.  On the second loop I was surprised at how well my legs were holding up.  I think the combination of the sun coming up, and that my buddy/neighbor Pat was going to run with me on the last loop kept me going strong.  I more or less hard-hiked and ran the same sections as I did on the first loop, finishing the second loop in a little over 3-1/2 hrs, and headed out on loop 3 with Pat around noon.  Before heading out I changed into some dry socks and gloves which helped a bunch.  Also, a big thanks to Pat for running with me, his cheesy jokes, stories which I can't recall completely, and keeping me steady on the ups and downs on the last loop.  I had no idea how my body was going to hold up after crossing the 40 mile mark, but I found I was still able to run, albeit very slowly, and with Pat basically fast-walking beside me.  The last loop took me a little over 4 hrs.  And somehow I came in 12th!  (10th for men) with a time of 11 hrs 12 minutes.  I did not expect to be in the top third of the field, and given the weather conditions, I am very happy with my finish.  The only disappointment was with my garmin fenix 2 watch.  The cold weather affected the battery, and the watch shut off just before finishing, which corrupted the data file and I lost the data.  Big bummer.  Maybe I'll call garmin.  I doubt they can do anything.  But it did help me during the race, to keep my pace steady and track HR during the first 2 loops.

"Want to zipline through the Amazon... from your computer?

+Google Maps just added zipline to the growing list of ways we capture Street View images from harder to reach locations around the world. Partnering with Amazona Sustainable Foundation, we used a zipline mounted camera to allow you to view the trees and other plant life in a section of the Amazon rainforest— from the forest floor to the upper canopy.

FAS came up with the idea of the zipline and borrowed Google's Trekker, Google's special camera for capturing Street View photos, through its loan program, which lends the cameras out to nonprofits and other organizations.
