Philip Parris "Phil" Lynott
(August 20, 1949 – January 4, 1986)

Growing up in Dublin in the 1960s, Lynott fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, most notably Skid Row alongside Gary Moore, before learning the bass guitar and forming Thin Lizzy in 1969.

Lynott's last years were dogged by drug and alcohol dependency. He was diagnosed as suffering from septicemia. Despite regaining consciousness enough to speak to his mother, his condition worsened by the start of the new year and he was put on a respirator. He died of pneumonia and heart failure due to septicemia in the hospital's intensive care unit on 4 January 1986, at the age of 36.

A happy birthday to :

Philip Parris "Phil" Lynott (1949 – 1986) was an Irish singer and musician. His most commercially successful group was Thin Lizzy, of which he was a founding member, the principal songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist. He later also found success as a solo artist.

Growing up in Dublin in the 1960s, Lynott fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, most notably Skid Row alongside Gary Moore, before learning the bass guitar and forming Thin Lizzy in 1969. After initial success with Whiskey in the Jar, the band found strong commercial success in the mid-1970s with hits such as "The Boys Are Back in Town", "Jailbreak" and "Waiting for an Alibi", and became a popular live attraction due to the combination of Lynott's vocal and songwriting skills and the use of dual lead guitars. Towards the end of the 1970s, Lynott also embarked upon a solo career, published two books of poetry, and after Thin Lizzy disbanded, he assembled and fronted the band Grand Slam, of which he was the leader until it folded in 1985.

He subsequently had major UK success with Moore with the song "Out in the Fields", followed by a minor hit "Nineteen", before his death on 4 January 1986. He remains a popular figure in the rock world, and in 2005, a statue was erected in his memory.

https://plus.google.com/110816517570197679564 KPFK : KPFK News EXCLUSIVE REPORT: General Dogon is a member of LA CAN, the Los Angeles Community Action Network...
KPFK News EXCLUSIVE REPORT: General Dogon is a member of LA CAN, the Los Angeles Community Action Network, an advocate for homeless and low-income residents of Skid Row. He says he was harassed and intimidated by LAPD and "purple shirts", a reference to the Central Business District private police that patrols the downtown area. He was canvassing to raise awareness of the Safer Cities Initiative, which LA CAN says has led to over zealous policing. Too many residents are being cited for jaywalking, spitting on the sidewalk, urinating, and other minor violations.

LA CAN and other homeless advocates fought the LAPD's plan to remove the belongings of homeless residents. As a result, the city launched Operation Healthy Streets. Last week, city leaders joined cleaning crews to scrub down sidewalks and streets, and offer services and programs to residents.

KPFK News' Ernesto Arce spoke with Pete White, LA CAN's executive director who says the city has long ignored the needs of its neediest residents in the homeless capital of the U.S. He says most people in Southern California get weekly trash pick-ups but city leaders are celebrating every-other-month clean-ups on Skid Row as an accomplishment.

Other critics of city plans and big money investors say there's a motivation to move the homeless population out of the area. They point to increasingly aggressive private police forces and pressure from business groups to "clean up" the area in order to make the entire downtown area more attractive to prospective developers.

Just a mile from Skid Row, the Miami-based Fifteen Group is pushing plans for a $2 billion development called the New Wyvernwood in Boyle Heights. The 11-acre plan in its initial proposal would make it the largest real estate project in recent Los Angeles history. It would flood the area with an estimated 20,000 new, mostly upper-income residents. Save Wyvernwood, a grassroots community group, says the city would lose one of its last public housing communities and most current residents would be forced to move regardless of so-called affordable housing provisions. The group is calling for improvements to the existing community and for city leaders to reject big money developers that would further gentrify their working-class, Latino neighborhood.

Stay tuned to KPFK News and the Pacifica Evening News for more coverage on the unfolding drama between wealthy developers, the business community, LAPD, city leaders, and working-class residents.

"Alcohol"

Here's a story about a sinner,
He used to be a winner who enjoyed a life of prominence and position,
But the pressures at the office and his socialite engagements,
And his selfish wife's fanatical ambition,
It turned him to the booze,
And he got mixed up with a floosie
And she led him to a life of indecision.
The floosie made him spend his dole
She left him lying on Skid Row
A drunken lag in some Salvation Army Mission.
It's such a shame.

Oh demon alcohol,
Sad memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would say,
Damn it all and blow it all,
Oh demon alcohol,
Memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol.
Sad memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol.

Barley wine, pink gin,
He'll drink anything,
Port, pernod or tequila,
Rum, scotch, vodka on the rocks,
As long as all his troubles disappeared.
But he messed up his life, went and beat up his wife,
And the floosie's gone and found another sucker
She's gonna turn him on to drink
She's gonna lead him to the brink
And when his money's gone,
She'll leave him in the gutter,
It's such a shame.

Oh demon alcohol,
Sad memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would say,
Damn it all and blow it all,

Sad memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would fall,
A slave to demon alcohol.

LOS ANGELES - Social workers, mental health experts and medical professionals  hit the streets of Skid Row today as the city and county begin a street- and sidewalk-cleaning effort in the area. It is the first time the City and County have collaborated in working with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) to offer homeless services directly to homeless on Skid Road.
Operation Healthy Streets will include a series of scrub downs in the one-square-mile Skid Row area. The effort will begin today along San Julian Street between Sixth and Seventh streets. The City Council recently approved $3.7 million in funds for the program and expanded it to an every-other-month schedule.
Emergency Response Team members of LAHSA have been notifying the homeless of the effort, and they will have to temporarily remove their belongings from the streets and sidewalks.
In conjunction with the cleanup, the effort includes an outreach move to help the homeless by offering social, medical and mental health services for people living on the streets.
County agencies will offer services including on-site health screenings, such as tuberculosis testing; Medi-Cal enrollment; medical transport; and placement in drug and alcohol treatment programs.
The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, which includes county and city officials, will coordinate the Operation Healthy Streets clean-up and services outreach effort.
City Councilman Jose Huizar, whose district includes Skid Row, said a clean-up alone would deal with “a surface issue” but that to “uplift this community we need to address the overwhelming human need in the area.”
Director Jeanette Row said, “We are pleased to work with the County and the City, which has jointly funded Operation Healthy Streets.” The media was invited today to go along and observe the City of LA Sanitation Dept. crews cleaning and sterilizing the streets, while LAPD and other agencies assisted LAHSA in homeless services. There 39,000 men, women and children who do not have a place to call home.
About the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA): The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) is a joint powers authority of the City and County of Los Angeles, created in 1993 to address the problems of homelessness in Los Angeles County. LAHSA is the lead agency in the HUD-funded Los Angeles Continuum of Care, and coordinates and manages over $70 million annually in federal, state, county and city funds for programs providing shelter, housing and services to homeless persons

WORSTEN DE ATH 10:

                                                                      VIII

Papa Smurph was in fine form, and fettle. He sold jokes, a dollar a laugh, and money refunded if you could keep a straight face. He kept the money if you smirked. He said: "Tthat means you're going to tell your friends, and laugh later at his expense. Whether you eat in, or take out the meal is the same price." It was all in the delivery, he often mused.

He had had this corner since Moses. He was well known, and treated with that odd mixture of deference, and contempt,  that is only reserved for the clergy, and skid row jesters, and buskers. He was a fool extraordinaire. He  was short 5'6" but a stocky 155; he was surprisingly hefty. He had a full snow white beard, and a head topped by a shock of thick coarse white hair. The sun had burnished his exposed skin the colour of well cooked onion rings, and would turn a deep pecan by the season's end; although the rest of him was still mushroom white. He was more akin to the anti-matter alternate universe version of Papa Smurph, rather  than the wise and kindly imp of the cartoon.

He was telling the joke about the Indian who took his horse to Eskimo country with a sign that read: "Make my horse laugh, win $50, $5 to try."
"Well the fellow had defeated all comers, so I said: 'I'll have a go, but I have a condition.' "
"Oh, yeah what's that?" Said the horse owner
"I gotta whisper in his ear."
"Pays yer money, and takes yer chances." He tells me.
"So I whisper in the nags ear, and he doubles over laughing, and I get the $50 dollar pay out. The next season there's the same feller, with the same horse, but the deal is to make the horse cry. And again he defeats all comers. So I steps up, and says: 'Let me try, but I have one condition.'
"You again!" Says he, "What's your condition?"
"Let me take him over to the alley way."
 "Okay, but no monkey business."
So I bring him over to the alley way, and then led him back weeping like a neurotic housewife at the marriage councillor.
"Hey whaddya do to my t'my horse! Look, first you make him laugh, and than you made him cry, and what in the Sam Hill is up with your cockamaimie conditions, anyways?"
"Well," says I, "First I whispered in his ear: 'My dick is bigger'n yers, so he laughs. This time I showed him, and he cried."
There was uproarious laughter followed by a shower of coins into Papa's upturned weather beaten feathered fedora.
"I swear the fella was goin' to shoot that poor nag, so I says: 'He didn't write the signs.'
He says: 'Fucked if he didn't, the whole damn thing was his idea in the first place!' "
More laughter, more coin. The last bit of inspired improv was to guilt the cheapskates into forking it over, and the generous to give more.

One of the on-lookers was John Jobeson who was walking up to the First Canadian Place from the municipal car park. As he emptied his pocket of change, he was passed by another business man type going the other way, who regarded the whole scene with revulsion. This was Worsten De Ath, on his way to his office to check out the file that had been transmitted to his computer.

Spider crossed University Ave. on the north side from the east, and arrived in front of Papa Smurph, who presently looked up, and greeted him with a hearty:
 "Hello, there young fella!"

At the south west corner adjacent to the north west corner of Union Station sat Littlejohn, and Marois, sprawled in their chairs in a rare patch of down town  sun, baking the morning chill from their bones. They walked up from the ferry docks at the foot of Bay St. just a few moments before, and were just starting their freshly poured coffees. She watched the scene that had played out kitty-corner to her across the intersection. The one suit was a philanthropist, and the other a narcissist, and the young man was anxious to speak with the old panner, she concluded. Her Bespectacled owlish eyes missed nothing...
