Then which of the blessings of your Rabb will you both deny?" (Surah Rahman # 12-13) Some Arabs still wear fresh Basil on Yaum ul-Jumu’ah as a fragrance. Suyuti states “smelling oranges fortifies the heart,” It has been narrated on the Prophet (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) that he said, “There are three things in the world that I enjoy: women, scent and the coolness of my eye in prayer.” The scent of lemons purifies pestilence and foul air. The Qur’an also speaks of Basil (ريحان) as a synonym of rest and provision for the believers brought close to Allah. (Surah Waaqi’ah #88-89 ) فامَا ان كان من المقرَبين فروح و ريحان و جنَت نعيم  Perfumes and scents are in use around the world in one form or another. Who can deny a good scent! I can still smell my best friend mom’s lemon pound cake. Aromatherapy is used in medicine to make the heart light to improve one’s disposition or to induce the body to release healing hormones to aid healing and wellbeing. A list of scents and their properties: Uod: Oil used as a perfume, wood burned as incense inhaling the smoke of which helps cure pleurisy (pneumonia). Chamomile: Used as a tea is relaxing, the oil reduces headaches when used as a compress, it is an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anticonvulsive.  Cinnamon: its fragrance fortifies the stomach, a mouthwash made of it used on an empty stomach is good for bad eyesight, has a warming effect, can be used as an air freshener and its oil is antifungal.  Frankincense: used as an incent it sweetens the air, aids against pestilence and fortifies the body. It can be eaten for different benefits or its oil can be used. It is anti-inflammatory.  Eucalyptus: used as an aromatic. Its oil is used as an ointment for muscle aches and pains, repels insect. It is antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. Thyme: Antibacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-fungal, removes the cause of flatulence, kills worms, is a digestive aid, increases urine and menstrual flow. Peppermint: fortifies the stomach, stops hiccups and aids sexual relation. Its oil improves ones mood, reduces fatigue and relaxes, also supports oral hygiene. Sandal Wood: Is used as an Incent, medicine and its oil supports liver function and aids in skin care.  Marsh Mallow: Aids in expelling excess fluid and mucus. Soothes and heals skin, mucus membranes and other tissue external and internal. Good for bladder infections, digestion issues, fluid retention, headaches, intestinal disorders, kidney problems, sinusitis and sore throat. Misk: As a scent it is said to be the best of perfumes. Medicinally it can be used orally, topically or inhaled. The dunes of paradise are quoted to be made of Misk. May Allah increase us all in our striving to get to Jannah.
