Ananta Shanti Prabhu surprisingly visited ISKCON temple on 10.05.13 in Tallinn, Estonia. It was amazing because next day on 11th of May we left for Sankirtan Traveling tour on our bus. And one day before when we were busy packing our bus getting ready for Harinam Sankirtan spreading movement all over Europe, first and only russian Srila Prabhupada desciple came to our temple. We consider it very auspicious as a blessing of Srila Prabhupada. Going around the world doing Harinam Sankirtan with this bus program is very dear to Shrila Prabhupada. Hare Krishna

https://plus.google.com/102753080536501200859 Akriti Bhalla : What is the name? The whole earth was known as Bharata. Bharat Varsha. Actually at that time the whole...
What is the name? The whole earth was known as Bharata. Bharat Varsha. Actually at that time the whole planet was known as Bharata. Gradually it started reducing and now only India is known as Bharata. But actually the whole planet was known as Bharata. So his first son became Bharata and his one hundred sons. And out of that nine sons – Kavi, Havir, Antariksa, Prabuddha, Pippalayana, Avirhotra, Drumila, Camasa and Karabhajana. They were all mahabhagavatas. Great devotees of the Lord! And eighty one sons, they became brahmanas qualified in the path of Karma kanda.  But all the hundred sons he wanted to teach them the path of Pure Bhakti Yoga, the pure devotional service to the Lord. So he was waiting for that opportunity. So one day while touring the Earth with his one hundred sons he came to a place known as brahma varta and in that place, he called all his hundred sons and instructed them science of the Supreme Personality of Godhead . He says:

nāyaḿ deho deha-bhājāḿ nṛloke
kaṣṭān kāmān arhate viḍ-bhujāḿ ye
tapo divyaḿ putrakā yena sattvaḿ
śuddhyed yasmād brahma-saukhyaḿ tv anantam

It’s a very beautiful verse. Ṛṣabhadeva told his sons that ‘nāyaḿ deho deha-bhājāḿ nṛloke’.

My dear sons, “Lord Krishna has not given you this human body just to enjoy sense gratification because sense gratification is available in the dog and the hog and the pig body”. In the animal body also one can enjoy, right. In fact, the dog, it is more easier to enjoy. The dog doesn’t have to cook in the kitchen, the dog directly can go in the garbage can and eat anything, free.  The dog can enjoy more. We try to enjoy, the pigeon can enjoy forty times sex every, more facility. So if human life is simply meant to enjoy then it would have been reverse but actually it is more easier for animals to enjoy. Pig, The pig can eat...

As many times it can enjoy, eat in the day time. So my dear sons human life is not simply meant for enjoyment. Whatever comes you just do that. No, that is not the goal of human life. It is meant for some discipline. ‘Viḍ-bhujāḿ ye’. There is no difference between the sense gratification which we get in the human life and the animal life. A pig is eating some paper and plastic in the garbage can and we are eating halwa and rasgulla. Is the taste different?

I mean for the pig it’s a delicacy, different kinds of stools, different kinds of paper and plastic. And we are eating food, for us also it’s a delicacy. After eating the taste is the same, when you sleep in the nice soft bed and the dog sleeps in the sand. After sleeping the dog enjoys more or we enjoy more. After sleeping who enjoys more? We are sleeping in the A.C and nice, soft foam mattress and the dog is sleeping on the sand. Who’s enjoying more?

Nobody knows.  Actually the dog is enjoying more because the dog doesn’t have a mobile phone to disturb.
There is nobody to disturb the dog in the sleep. We have so many disturbances in our life. Even our sleep gets disturbed. So if we want to eat and sleep and just enjoy, then the animal life is more conducive for that. So Rsabhadeva said “No my dear sons, tapo divyaḿ putrakā yena sattvaḿ”. All of you are instructed to do divya tapasya. “Tapo divyam “. And what is the divya tapasya? Vibrate your tongue. Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare! Nityanana! Gauranga!

Vibrating the tongue is also tapasya. You have to do some effort to chant. Some people say, “I can’t, I can’t, I can’t chant, I can’t, I can’t, I can’t chant”. But they can’t, can’t, can’t, they can say many times. But they can’t chant, chant, chant.  So it’s also an austerity to say i don’t want to chant. So better is to do the divine austerity of saying that I will chant the Holy Name.  In Kaliyuga, Lord has made very easy, if you want to eat, you offer it to Bhagavan and then eat the prasadam. That is the tapasya of the tongue. You don’t eat anything which is not offered to Bhagavan. That is the tapasya of the tongue. Anything you want to eat cook nicely for the Lord, offer it and then eat. And then what you want to talk, always talk about the Lord. If you want to smell, smell the flower offered to the Lord. If you want to walk, then walk to the satasanga and come to the Bhagavata saptah. If you want to think. You think about the Lord’s pastimes. Do all these tapasyas, very simple tapasya and then you will achieve brahma-saukhyaḿ tv anantam. The unlimited happiness of Bhakti Yoga. So that is what Ṛṣabhadeva instructed His sons and that is what Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu, also instructed to all the sannyasis in Varanasi. And then ultimately Ṛṣabhadeva instructed all his sons and He decided to renounce the kingdom and he gave the charge of the whole universe to Bharata and He Himself became very renounced. He remained at home for sometime. He renounced even wearing clothes. His hair became very disturbed and He was on the topmost paramhamsa platform. He was meditating on the Supreme Lord, His own self actually and externally He looked like a ghost or a mad man but externally His body was very effulgent. And then  He left His palace also and started traveling all over the Earth and when He was walking, people made fun of Him, people used to spit on Him, they used to throw stones on Him and dirt on Him and pass foul air on His face. And people used to insult Him but He was totally over the bodily platform, His eyes were just like lotus petals. And He was so attractive even though His body was so unkemptness. Then ultimately because of so many people insulting Him, He was not affected because He was continuously meditating on the Lord, chanting His name, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare! Nityananda! Gauranga!

Then ultimately He decided that I will go to the forest. This forest was in Karnataka. He came into after walking. He came into a forest in Karnataka. The name of the forest was Kutkachali. Is the forest still existing? The name of the forest is Kutkachali in Karnataka and He entered into that forest. And He did not want anyone to come to disturb Him, so what he did is He passed stool and He passed stool and His stool covered His whole body. And you will not believe that because He was God His stool was so fragrant that eight y miles around in that forest, a beautiful sugandha coming from His stool. Fragrance. So anybody who claims to be God, we should ask him. Nowadays people claim to be God. We should ask, “Is your stool fragrant?” Then he will not reply.

So Rsabhadeva was lying like that for many years. He became an avadhuta, python man. He was sleeping like a python. He was not even moving for food. He would open His mouth and food would fall in His mouth because He was so dependent on Lord Krishna that Krishna would fulfill everything. He did not even have to move. And ultimately His body became fully spiritual and He decided to disappear, end His pastimes. So there was a big forest fire by brushing of two bamboos and the whole forest got fire and the whole forest was burned up and Lord Rsabhadeva also ended His pastimes in that way, but unfortunately  there was a king named as Arahada who was staying next to that forest. He was the king of Tonka,Venkata and Kutaka. And this Arahada king he thought I will imitate Rsabhadeva, I will also go naked and i will start my own religion and unfortunately that is the time when this Arahada started the religion of Jainism. Jainism, that started at that time but it is not that, Arahada just imitated. Nobody can imitate Lord Rsabhadeva. If you don’t wear clothes it’s not civilised as per the vedic culture. Only Lord Rsabhadeva can do that, it is meant for any other person in this human life, not  to wear  clothes. Unfortunately this came. So now we go over to the next pastime in the fifth canto of Srimad Bhagavatam about the great king, Bharata Maharaja.
He became the king of the universe, the king of the Earth. And he married Pancajani, the daughter of Visvarupa and he begot five sons, Sumati, Rashtrabhrita, Sudarshana, Avarana and Dhumraketu. In that way Bharata Maharaja ruled the Earth very very nicely, everyone was very happy. And you know for how many years he ruled the Earth? For ten million years. The age in Satyayuga was so big. He ruled the Earth for ten million years and His quota  of enjoyment. Even after ten million years he was in the prime of life. He was young, youthful. But then he decided that he gave up his kingdom to his children. His children, his sons and he retired into the forest. He went to the Pulaha ashrama in Haridwar and he started meditating on the Supreme Personality of Godhead and at the banks of the Gandaki river, he would collect flowers and twigs and tulsis to offer to the Lord, and he would worship the Saligram Sila of the Lord, in that way he renounced all desires and he worshiped the Lord and steadily his love for the Lord increased. He used to meditate on the Lord, sing the bhajjans of the Lord, kirtanas, tears would come from his eyes. When he would chant the name of the Lord, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare! Nityananda! Gauranga!

His heart would melt in bliss, he would be melting in bliss. Whose heart is melting while chanting? Our heart has become hard like stone. ‘Asva samsaram hrideyam gatetam’.  Because many many lives we have not worshiped the Lord, previous lives. So our heart is like stone. Actually  the real chanting means tears should come from the eyes. Bhava, we should feel connection with the Lord. So Bharata Maharaja reached the stage of spontaneous bhakti, raganuga bhakti. Spontaneous bhakti, he reached the stage and he looked so beautiful. He was dressed in deer skin and he was bathing three times a day and his hair always wet and he would be in the morning, he would sing the hymns of Rig Veda and in that way his heart would be like a lake filled with ecstatic love for Lord Krishna. But he was not very careful in his bhakti.

One day when he was sitting, he was finishing his morning duties on the river bank and he was trying to concentrate on his mantras suddenly, one deer came and the deer, she was drinking water of that river which was flowing, the Gandaki river, the small tributary. At that time when the deer was drinking the water. At that time a lion roared from the trees, from nearby. There was a big roar of the lion and when the lion roared, then the deer, she became very frightened because the deer is the natural prey for the lion. And looking here and there in panic, she wanted to jump in the river and when she jumped into the river in panic, she actually because of  fear, she was so fearful that the child in her womb. The child deer, fell down inside the water. The child deer is known as doe. So the doe fell down in the water and she went into a cave and she died. The mother, she died. So this doe was lying in the water. And Bharata  Maharaja glanced at the doe and the doe was trembling with cold, so Bharata felt compassion for this doe. He brought the doe with him. And he felt as if he was a sincere friend of the doe and from that day onwards he started raising the doe so nicely, so carefully. Started feeding grass to the doe and protecting the doe from the attack of the animals. And he was very affectionate to the doe. When the doe was itching, he would itch, scratch the doe. And he would always try to keep the doe in a very comfortable position. And out of love, sometimes he would kiss the doe and by all this his Krishna prema became doe prema. His love for Krishna slowly slowly disappeared and his love for this doe took over his life.  Whenever he used to do the pooja he would first check up whether the doe was properly sitting or not. In the middle of the pooja, worship he would always think of the doe, so he could not meditate on the Lord properly, so he lost, temporarily he lost all his meditation on the Lord and in fact slowly he was so attached to the doe that he gave up all his rules and regulations and all his tithis, all his  pooja and then he would say that by the force of destiny the Lord has given me this doe, so my duty is to protect it, give it shelter. I am his father, I am mother i am brother i am the relative of the doe. Imagine! Bharata, the king of the Earth. He has given up the whole earth, opulence, he has given up millions of rupees and  millions of horses and millions of soldiers. And he has renounced everything and now he has become attached to the doe. This is known as maya, the all powerful energy of Lord Krishna.

“DAIVI HY ESA GUNA-MAYI, MAMA MAYA DURATYAYA”
Lord Krishna says in Bhagavada Gita, my maya, is so strong. “If you give maya an inch it will take an L”. You know, there is a saying in English. That story i have told you of the camel in the forest. You know that story. There was a man, he riding a camel in the desert, it became very hot in the day time. So he said now i have to rest so he made a nice tent and he made a nice tent in the desert  and then the tent was small. He could only sleep. So he went to sleep in that tent. But it was getting very hot so the camel was thinking, “I also want some shade. I also want to relax.”

So suddenly the camel, put the head of the camel inside the tent and pushed his head inside the tent and this person was sleeping  inside the tent. Suddenly he woke up and he saw the head of the camel had come inside the tent. He said, “What has happened? Okay, come, come. You also sleep nicely”.  The camel was now feeling lot of heat now on his back so he started moving more inside the tent so the camel pushed the back inside the tent and this guy’s head came out of the tent. Then the camel took control of the tent. Then slowly slowly the camel pushed inside and took full control of the tent and this fellow went out in the sun. So that is how this works that if we are not very careful then all our bhakti can be destroyed by one bad desire. One bad desire and all our spiritual practices can be destroyed just like if you take a pot of water from the river and you bring it to your home but you may fill the pot with fully but if there is one whole in the pot. What will happen? All the water will be gone by the time you reach home. So one has to be very careful. Even a great king,Bharata maharaja, he was 99 percent perfect even at that stage he got bewildered. It is said, “There is many a slip between the cup and the lip”.  Till you achieve God, you have to be very careful. You have to be always surrendered to the Lord.

“MAM EVA YE PRAPADYANTE, MAYAM ETAM TARANTI TE”
The only way we can be protected from maya is that we should always be humble. As the fisherman put his net in the water, the big fish get caught in the water , the small fish escape. Similarly those who are humble they will always remain protected by the Lord. But those who are very proud they will be caught in the net of maya and so you should always remain humble and chant the Holy Names, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare! Nityananda! Gauranga!

Even while doing yagna, he used to pat the deer. His yagna was continuously disturbed by the deer. And in fact, sometimes when he used to put the ingredients for the yagna. The deer would come and kiss those ingredients and made them all impure. So He had to throw them away but still he would not chastise the deer. When he used to start meditating, the deer would become angry that ,“You are not taking care of me, what are you meditating on?”. Then he would open his eyes, no no, don’t worry my deer! He would put the deer on the lap and stop meditating on the Lord. In that way one day, he left the deer to eat the grass and suddenly the deer went somewhere so Bharata Maharaja became very disturbed due to the absence of deer. He said, “Oh unfortunate Bharata, the Lord has given you the charge of the deer and you could not take care of this doe. It is gone. So he started searching after the deer. And when he saw the footprints of the deer on the ground he started glorifying the Earth. “Oh earth! You are so fortunate, the deer is walking on you”. You see the power he got totally bewildered by the affection towards the deer and then suddenly he saw the moon and in the moon, he saw some spots, black spots. So he thought that the moon has given protection to the deer because the deer has also the black spots on his body. So even the moon is reminding him of the deer, even the ground is reminding of the deer. Anywhere he is seeing  the face of the deer. This is known as deer consciousness. So what you will have deer consciousness or Krishna consciousness? What do you want? If we have the deer consciousness, then next life we will take the body of the deer like it happened to Bharata Maharaja. He was searching for the deer and he came on the top of the cliff. He did not know there is a big cliff and he fell down in the big cliff. And he said, “Aaaah! Thinking of the deer and when he fell down and he was in the thorns and bushes and was on the verge of dying but suddenly he saw the deer sitting next to him. And  the deer could only cry that he was going to die. Can the deer save him? No. Who can save us? Only Krishna. So we have to have Krishna consciousness.  But in the last moment while dying he saw the deer so immediately next life he got the body of the deer. Though it was only temporary. Actually Krishna deliberately gave Bharata Maharaja, the body of a deer for a very short time because he wanted to revive remembrance of his devotion which ninety nine percent devotion which he had completed, the Lord wanted to revive the remembrance and wanted to tell him how careful he should be and wanted him to perfect  his devotion in his third life. So second life he got the body of the deer and as a deer he remembered his past life, that is the advantage of bhakti yoga, when you chant the nama, when you chant  the name of the Lord it goes to the credit of your atma and it is never destroyed but in this world if you accumulate ten lakh rupee, next life you have to start from zero again. Can you carry forward your bank balance to next life. Any bank is giving this opportunity. Any bank is giving this facility that you can carry forward. No. Why?  Because the bank doesn’t know which birth you are going to take. Multimillionaire he had crores of rupees in the bank and in the next life he became a dog.  Then he came outside the bank and he said, “Bow, bow, bow”! Give me back my money. So nobody entertained. So whatever positions we get, these material positions. We have to start from zero in our next life again. And in our next body the position will be different like in human body you want furniture, you want home but as a dog we want bones. So that position will be different from human  position. So  we have to again start from zero. Again but the chanting which  we have done, the Bhakti Yoga, like today you have heard the Bhagavatam saptah of the Lord, the lila katha, this will remain with your soul always. Even if you do not perfect your bhakti in this life, next life you will continue from, now in this life you are twenty percent. You will continue from twenty one percent like Bharata Maharaja even though he became a deer he continued from the ninety nine percent, from where ever he had left. He never forgot all his devotion which he did. So in that way he always stayed near the ashrama of Pulaha Muni. Again he went back to the same ashrama as a deer also and he was waiting to die that this life will finish, he would drink water. He would not roam about with other deers he would just hear the saint speaking about the Lord. And then third life he was born as the  son of  very very pious brahmana in the dynasty of the Angira. The brahmanana had two wives. The first wife he had nine sons and from the second wife he had one brother and one sister, twins, out of that Bharata was twin brother and in this life he will be as known as Jada Bharata because from childhood, he saw that last life I was not careful so I missed my chance,  then i had to become a deer, in this life, from my childhood i will act as if i am deaf and dumb and foolish. His father said Bharata you go to the toilet and you wash your hands. So Jada Bharata would wash his hands and then go to the toilet. Deliberately he used to do opposite. His father tried to teach him Gayatri mantra for six months. He acted as if he did not understand anything. Deliberately he acted like that because he did not want to be attached to anything. Then his father tried to give him the knowledge of the Vedas but he would not seem to understand at all but his father was very hopeful of rectifying him, of correcting him. So Jada Bharata, his father wanted to make him a scholar but he remained jada and slowly his father also died, the death overcame his father. Then he fell into the hands of his other step brothers, of other wife and they made use of Jada Bharata. They said he is a very strong, healthy man. Let us make him work hard in the field. So they sent Jada Bharata out in the field. And they said he is a brainless, useless person what can he do. He can become a scarecrow in the field atleast he can fly away the birds and all those things. And Jada Bharata, he was so much established in the transcendence. He did not care what externally they used to tell him insults. They used to give him some broken rice, some rice mixed with worms and all that to eat. They used to treat him very badly. Boiled and rice chaff and worm eaten grains or burned grains which was stuck at the bottom of the vessel they used to give him to eat and he used  to eat.
