There's a scene in The Pursuit of Happyness where Will Smith's boss catches him at the street in front of the building and says "Oh no, I've forgotten my wallet. Hey, can you give me $5 for the cab?"

Will Smith looks in his wallet. He does have $5, but that's all he has. To most people around him, $5 would not be missed at all, it's throwaway money. But to him, at that point in his life, it meant he and his son could eat that day, or maybe he could take a bus instead of a very long walk.

There are people in life who want desperately to have every new gadget that comes out. There are other people who simply don't want to be left in the dust after everyone else has whatever the gadget is.

Before I had a cell phone (just a few years ago) I got some very awkward and/or horrified looks when I explained that I was not reachable 24/7, not even for the sake of my dear children. When my youngest was a toddler and my older child's school called to say I needed to come and pick her up mid-day because of some problem (this happened frequently; she has special needs) I informed them it would take me about 45 minutes to get there whether I walked or took the bus. We only had one car, and I didn't have access to it at the time. I listened while the person on the phone whispered to someone behind her "she doesn't have a car?" followed by a voice in the background saying "What? She doesn't have a car? Really?" and so on, until I was able to hang up, gather my toddler in a stroller, and head for the school.

Some people have vast resources not just of money, but time or support or energy. Not everyone has the luxury of ANY of these, much less ALL of them. Friends with chronic illness have no energy. Friends who live far from family have no support system. For some reason or many, people do not all have these things and no one should ever fault them unless they have lived a year in the person's shoes and know every detail of their life.

For one person, a doctor's appointment at 2 in the afternoon simply means getting in the car at 1:45 and driving there. For another, it might mean making a reservation weeks in advance with a driving service to be picked up at 12:30, only to have the service screw up and a frantic call results in being picked up, but late, and then the doctor either refuses to see them or chides them for their "habit" of being late.

Everyone's journey is different.

It is important to be kind.
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

SUICIDE ME
(Originally Posted 10/04/16 at uchidaogime.wordpress.com)

Jered Leto’s Suicide Squad begins with promise but instead of doing the kind thing of workmanning through a simple action-based arc and ending with a quip and a bang, the movie injects too much of everything, focus groups that, assigns algorithms to their reactions, mixes whatever’s left in a blender, and charges someone in New York City $14.50 to suck it through a coffee stirrer.

Cruel, right? With big money Hollywood pictures like this, however, it's tough to be kind. Every summer, so much money and time are spent trying to figure out how to make a movie that will get as many people into the cinemas as they can that even a blue-collar guy like myself can be lulled into sympathy for the executives charged with the task. From late Thursday evening, through all of Sunday, just about every seat in every theater that plays one of these $100M+ films must be filled for it to be a success. How could any group of creative people be expected to work at the top of their game? Movies are hard to make, much less make well. Just look at all the thousands of names in the credits: location manager; computer effects; office coordinator; fight choreography; truck drivers; and writers, editors and directors. The list goes on but it’s the last three in whom trust should be afforded. At $175 million, it isn’t too much to go in with a plan that everyone is confident with and prepared to stick to through to the end.

As secret agent Amanda Waller commiserates with other men in black types to map out her plan for assembling a squad of criminals capable of taking down metahumans (DC’s version of mutants) who can’t be subdued with nightsticks and handcuffs, each bit of exposition read from a character’s rap sheet is punctuated by a flashback. One nice, beefy opening action set piece is all you need to establish the military precision Waller, Flagg and their agents use to capture a supervillain but this pattern of breaking away from the main narrative for 8 flashbacks just took the wind out of the story. Our villain, an ancient Mayan witch called Enchantress, takes control of Midway City with her brother, also a reincarnated CGI effect from the late nineties, and turns the city’s inhabitants into zombies. As part of the deal, Will Smith’s wisecracking assassin, Deadshot, was promised more time with his daughter while Harley Quinn-an ex-psychiatrist in love with The Joker-really just wants to use her bat to break things for a little while, with the possibility of early parole. Maybe. Enchantress also happens to inhabit the body of Rick Flagg’s archeologist girlfriend so his mission becomes to stop one without killing the other. Any of these three stories could have been our main focus. When it came to Harley Quinn and Joker’s relationship, it felt as though it was treading into interesting waters only to be pulled back to shore by nervous studio execs who didn’t trust the public to enjoy the ambivalence of joining those two characters on their ride. I would have preferred this movie been a story about Harley Quinn and “Mista J” but no matter whether you were interested in the character arc of Deadshot, Croc or Captain Boomerang, the fact remains that had the story been scaled down to one or two, this schizophrenic tone could have been avoided. This was clearly the result of a studio afraid to allow David Ayer to make his movie behave with as much controlled insanity as its characters.

I’ve never ridden the Jai Courtney hate train but I’ve never seen him so charismatic and everyone is trying their hardest but Will Smith can't funny his way out of this, Margot Robbie can't sexy her way out. All are doing their damndest to charm and titillate us into feeling something as they walk us through the murky backlot on which this overlong, money pit was filmed but you can’t save a man from himself nor a movie from overthinking executives. It’s a risk and a gamble in the hundreds of millions of dollars. I get it but almost every time they try to focus group the hell out of a project, it winds up not only falling short financially but critically. DC is obviously trying to build out their movie universe the way Marvel has been doing since that first Iron Man movie in 2008 but to do so is to invite direct comparison with an empire that’s had almost a decade’s head start. DC has always faced the popular perception that they’re a second city to Marvel and this big, loud brass band of a film is how they wanted to announce to the world that their expanded universe stretches beyond the caped crusader and the man of steel. With so many character arcs to follow, however, the one or two we may really care about feel rushed. By contrast, the audience for this summer’s Captain America Civil War came in armed with the benefit of 12 prior movies, most of which focus on a particular character so very little had to be explained. There is a good movie in here and perhaps a corporation willing to let go of its pride and allow Ayer to re-edit this for home viewing, in a way that trims the fat can give it a second life on Blu-Ray and VOD but if they bury the creative impulse of someone as creative as Ayer beneath their collective ego, it won't bode well for the their upcoming projects in this series. At one point someone who was caught and hung upside down and unconscious amidst swirling waves of garbage and bound by...vines(?) is rescued and walks out of the background with her earrings on, no scars, with her pants suit unmolested and wrinkle-free. All that attention paid to CGI spectacle and no one thought to inject the faintest bit of realism into the continuity of the production design or wardrobe to aide believably. Not in the slightest. It’s because that scene was added as a way of appeasing the emotional immaturity of, in their elitist view, an ostensibly dumb audience that can’t handle the death of a fictional person...or at least the prospect of her fate not being revealed until the inevitable sequel.

I have never seen any but two Star Trek films: J.J. Abrams’ reboot and 1982’s Wrath of Khan which was a sequel. I only know the names Uhuru and Sulu because of the way they chided Jim Carey as Captain Kirk for his unwitting white supremacy in a comedy sketch on t.v.’s In Living Color titled “Wrath of Farrakhan”. I cared immensely, however, about the goings on in those two Star Trek stories because neither Abrams, Nicolas Meyer nor their writers felt the need to weigh down the proceedings with a whole lot of exposition or flashbacks. The stories simply open themselves up to the viewer, establish the tone and characters, present challenge, struggle through challenge, resolve challenge. Denouement. The end. They are storytelling 101. Movies afford writers and directors lots of room to play with the order of those milestones but so do novels and comic books. Those mediums are rarely stymied by a committee of people who try to apply scientific reasoning to something that should be felt by an audience. For years I have wanted that studio execs, when faced with the choice of dumbing a script down or making the smarter choice, to please trust us to get it and make the smarter choice. Ironically, by using a bit of logic, you can find clever ways to inject certain boilerplate elements into a movie without feeling prefabricated but to do that requires collaboration with people who are actually creative and want to squeeze more out of their lives’ work than an extra dollar. Had there been more self-aware scenes like the one that takes us out of the action and has the entire team just walk into an abandoned bar for a drink where they can talk to each other like human beings and come to terms with how they’ve been played by the institution they have agreed to serve, it would have betrayed some intelligence about itself. Right now, I think that scene was added by David Ayer (since scenes were just being added based on studio notes anyway) as a comment of how his institution was playing him.

Jared Leto’s suicide squad actually has three of it’s best scenes at or near the end when Deadshot, Harley Quinn and The Joker honor their deals, make peace with their fates and play one last gag on a societal institution. Perhaps the institution will let whoever does the next DC movie put story and character before spreadsheets, focus groups and ego.
