Last year we sold the family home of 3000 sq ft.  It was made up of our home plus live work space and was great to bring the kids up in, but very expensive to run.  So....the idea was to completely downsize.  The idea grew and  grew  (or should I say shrank) and I now find myself on the eve of going to buy a static caravan which will be our home for the next 6 months or so.  Its going to take a long time to find the perfect plot to build our eco home so until that time we are going to practice living with ...a..lot...less.. of everything.
We first moved last year from the big place into a Victorian rental for 6 months.  This meant going through all our stuff and getting rid of loads (very hard but haven't actually missed anything).  We gave lots to charity shops - clothes, redundant sports kit, books, duplicate kitchen equipment etc. Student relatives came and gathered up household items to stock their temporary accommodation. Somethings we left  on the pavement with a 'take me please' stickers on them.  These included among other stuff some large pieces of metal (? husband's collection?), the old guinea pig cage and some unopened Ikea shelves.  All this went so quickly - blink and it vanished but a note came back from the cage collectors thanking us and letting us know that the new occupiers were very comfortable. Cute!
I made sooo many trips to the tip and recycled several forests worth of paper and just stuff which accumulates with time.
How many perished tennis balls do we need when actually none of us really ever play? The neighbours dog was thrilled.
Freecycle was excellent - our collection of trestle tables left over from an Arts Club , went to a Scout Group who had been having cake sales to raise money to buy some of their own - so they were delighted. We didn't bother to do car boot sales - although this would have been a good way to recycle a lot of stuff.  Time was a bit short and I sort of thought that by giving it  to the charity shops it was all going to a good cause.
I seriously edited all my work equipment - I sew for a living - boxes of buttons, fabrics and general kit went to the local school, again - thrilled.
So the experience although a bit daunting was very cathartic.  I just knew that whatever came with us had to either work in a small space or be of significant use/value to warrant being stored at great expense.
We, in the West particularly, just accumulate so much stuff - I couldn't believe what was in my airing cupboard - the kids hadn't used the Tank Engine duvet for 15 years - why on earth was it there?  Someone would have loved it. How many beach towels do we use - not that many for sure.  Out! out! out! - all of it, in a ruthless frenzy of Empty Nesting.
Sometimes, if I felt a particular item had a special significance to someone I would run it by them before disposing of it.  More often than not, the said item would be lovingly held and examined by the owner, then dismissed and consigned to whatever fate I had in mind for it.  Little quiet emotional moments - like looking through dusty photo albums.  But hell I was on a roll - pack, recycle or use, pack recycle or use.  It seemed to go on forever.  But finally the home was empty - totally.  Just me R,and the cleaning team.
And then we left London.  Wow - very emotional moments but also good.  The home was too big for just R and me - too much space to heat and light - we needed a new way of living - much simpler.
We used to work hard to keep the household in shape - food in the fridge for any number of people who might turn up - constant hot water - and the heating and electricity bills were only ever going to go up as we had made the place as energy efficient as we could.
But now - the big change.  How on earth would I edit my shoe collection for a start.  Well  I decided not to - just yet.  I divided all the clothes that were to come with us into summer and winter.  I packed carefully putting plenty of Moth repellant with my precious knits and woollens.  I bought cheap zip bags from the market and labeled them carefully.
All our storage was going into a container on a friend's farm.  R and I spent a weekend fitting out the huge space with shelves and racks.  We had a book tied to the door at the entrance with a map showing where everything was stored.  We tried to make it logical - stuff we really didn't need to see - even for a few years  - could go right at the back on the top shelf  R's tools and the kitchen stuff was placed nearer the entrance.  Bikes were hung fron the ceiling.  Damn we were Goood at this storage lark. ( I haven't actually been  into the container for nearly a year now and I slightly suspect that the delving son and daughter might not have been quite so efficient with some of their repacking efforts - we shall see!)
Anyway after 6 months of renting the small 4 bedroom Victorian terrace  in Rye, with micro non functioning kitchen - we moved again into a gorgeous farm cottage belonging to friends. This was to be home for about a year while we decided what part of the country we might like to live in.  We did the move ourselves this time.  Renting a van and employing a friend and his son to help with the lifting.
Again we had to address the storage situation as the cottage only had 2.5 bedrooms and very little storage.  More stuff was recycled.
My big coup though, was buying the 'sofa of my wildest dreams'.  I found my B and B Italia sofa at an auction house and bought it for
£84!!!!!!!.  Unbelievable.  So I needed to get rid of my old one.  I contacted the local furniture 'exchange' - I found their number online.  A lovely man turned up with dapper ponytail and leather waistcoat and took away a few pieces of furniture that we no longer needed - an old desk which was no use to man nor beast really - filing systems are a bit different these days and a Victorian desk was just a surface to dump stuff.  Also the single beds went.  However the sofa was not taken.  It needed a fire certificate for the fabric in order for them to be able to pass it on.  It was such a great sofabed (not as good as my B&B) but the cost of reupholstering it would be the same as buying a new one!  Crazy.  Our only recourse was to break it up and recycle it.  Lots of arguments in our house about that one!
So here we are - sitting very comfortably in our pretty cottage with beautiful views.  I am surrounded by probably one third of our possessions. I know that in the container I have many beautiful kitchen bowls and cake tins.  Boxes of glasses, ornaments and odd collections of stones (very important ones obviously).  If I needed to go camping I could produce a small festival's worth of equipment (actually I think the kids might have swiped all that). However the important thing here is to note that I don't miss any of it at all and am managing very well with my reduced  circumstances.
The small fridge is modestly stocked with the usual suspects - but I don't feel guilty if it gets a bit empty - we just get creative (dahl  dear?). We try to buy locally as there are some great markets around - the quality of our food has definitely improved because of this although I suspect its more expensive - the meat certainly is but it just so tasty.  We are eating less I think, but more healthily.  Am feeling a bit reluctant to cook the pork chops which are in the fridge right now as they were running around the field next to us only last week.  I know, I know, I am being pathetic but I think waiting a week or two would be more 'polite' between patting and eating ones porcine neighbours!
This winter we turned off all the radiators in the rooms we didn't use and shut the doors. Put on more sweaters and had hot water bottles at night.  Funnily its now May and we are still hunkered down in front of a log fire of an evening, wearing several layers of winter items.  Come on summer - you know you can do it!

TOPIC: WHAT ON EARTH AM I HERE FOR?
DAY 1: IT ALL STARTS WITH GOD
For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible,...everything got started in Him and finds its purpose in Him. ~Collosians 1:16~

"Unless you assume a God, the question of life's purpose is meaningless." ~Bertrand Russell~

It's not about you! The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfullment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness. It's far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams and ambitions. If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God. You were born by His purpose and for His purpose.
Contrary to what most popular books, movies, and seminars tell you, you won't discover your life's meaning by looking within yourself. You've probably tried that already. You didn't create yourself, so there is no way you can tell yourself what you were created for!
THINKING ABOUT MY PURPOSE:
Point to Ponder: It's not about me.

Verse to remember: "Everything got started in Him and finds its purpose in Him" Colossians 1:16

Question to Consider: In spite of all the advertising around me, how can I remind myself that life is really about living for God, not myself?
