Elsewhere in soccer, the European champions Barcelona defeated Porto two goals to nil to help themselves to the European Super Cup. Yesterday in Blighty it was reported that the annual immigration figures revealed that something like 237,000 more people were entering Britain than leaving it. This does not meet with the satisfaction of the Conservative Party which has pledged its intent to decrease the margin to no more than an annual surplus of ten thousand. The Tories are blaming Labour for their encouragement of immigration, or at least an impotent attempt to stem the tide. Yes there are many talented people who come to these shores and their work ethic and even moral values are a welcome inclusion. However, I will never understand the logic of immigration when the state has homeless people and millions of jobless people. It is not about objecting to other races, but I reckon that each nation ought to house all its citizens and employ them all before opening the doors to others. It's rather like allowing people to stay at your house and eat your food while your children sleep on the floor and eat the leftovers. Would that be sensible? Not exactly! Tonight I had an excellent session of conversation and cuisine with new friends from church. The remarkable thing is that the host is someone who I didn't initially warm to nor presumably he with me. However, a few months down the line he is proof positive that the people whom we are inclined to write off are actually the ones who are there for us in the long run, while those whom we take an initial liking to don't live up to the high expectations. In the English soccer Premiership, both the title pretenders Chelsea and Liverpool recorded three-one home wins, with the latter temporarily taking up residence on the top perch. It was also a good afternoon for their fellow-Merseysiders, Everton, whose victory against Blackburn Rovers owed a lot to proficiency at penalties, with Rovers missing twice and the Toffees then showing their opponents how to successfully convert a spot kick. Meanwhile closer to the ranch, I attended the 'Black Saturday' parade in Limavady, and a mighty fine parade it was too. Poor Arsène Wenger's hapless bunch succumbed to ManUre to the tune of an incredulous eight goals to two. Wayne Looney helped himself to a hat-trick. One would hope that at least on this occasion, Mr Wenger won't suggest that scandalous bad luck or refereeing was to blame. These two results amounted to a staggering final score of Manchester thirteen goals, north London three. It's a funny old game. North of Hadrian's Wall, the two Glasgow also-rans returned to bullying lesser Scottish teams, with each winning two goals to nil. Clearly the SPL (the Slow Progress League) isn't in the same league as the Europa League. Over the Atlantic reservoir, Hurricane Irene is creating havoc in New York. Gee, what is it with those silly Yanks and naming each hurricane? It humanises each unwanted intruder and makes such terrifying phenomena seem like cuddly toys. 'Oh that Irene character was a bit of a rascal.' Oh just number the darn things instead of transforming these life-threatening events into domestic pets with nice names. Rumour has it that Mr Gaddafi wants to 'negotiate'. Is he having a laugh or what? It must admittedly be a bit demoralising for the old codger to now find himself jobless and homeless. I reckon a new career as a stand-up comedian would be his most realistic way forward. Having said that, more news is emerging of vindictive atrocities by the ancien régime of Libya in its last days, and this is certainly no laughing matter. The UK government is also hoping that the new Libyan administration will co-operate fully in the pursuit of the killer of WPC Yvonne Fletcher. Surely it is the very least they can do in return for Britain's support and aid. This man does have a history of 'dying'. Call me a handsome and talented cynic, but maybe al-Megrahi may remain in a coma for several years to come? Dear old Arsène Wenger must be wishing that he was in a coma after the Old Trafford massacre. His employers have responded to the slaughter by awarding free tickets to the suffering fans who made the trip to Manchester yesterday. Monsieur Wenger however will soldier on. Yes there is no point whatsoever in dismissing him unless there is a better candidate to be hired as his replacement. Having said that, one does get the impression that the hierarchy at Arse-nil regard Arsène as an umbilical cord that they dare not remove. It's all very well maintaining continuity and stability, but surely heads must roll after the Gunners conceded eight goals for the first time in a match since 1896. Elsewhere in London, the locals of Notting Hill were hosting Europe's biggest street party. Fortunately the carnival has not spilled over into a riot. Meanwhile the world of sport is still reeling from the shock of the great Usain Bolt being evicted from the one hundred metres final at the World Championships after he was guilty of a false start. It does seem a bit harsh to disqualify any athlete for one false start. As a consequence of the new draconian law, the world governing body of athletics now has some egg on its face because it's party-pooper regulation has cheated the world of a race between the world's best. Can we have some sanity restored please? Back in Blighty, there is no live Premiership soccer tussle tonight. This is because of the awful international matches that are next on the agenda. It is questionable whether the footie followers care as much for internationals as they do for club football. It's hard to get excited when you know that England will flop at the finals tournament and Scotland won't even qualify. Today is the anniversary of the birth of the late Michael Jackson. Funnily enough, the old tyrant's family have been welcomed with open arms by neighbouring Algeria. The latter are providing the flimsy excuse that their hospitality is a humanitarian gesture. I wonder if they are being paid handsomely to give refuge to the Gaddafi household. Why else would anyone want to admit into their midst north Africa's answer to the Kray family? In Libya itself, the National Transitional Council have pronounced the leading suspect in the murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher as himself dead. Apparently the fiend in question was killed in a feud amongst pro-Gaddafi supporters. Oh again this looks like quite a convenient yarn. Undeterred, William Hague has re-iterated that a police investigation will be pursued. In south Korea at the athletics World Championships, Britain's golden girl had to make do with silver, as Jessica Ennis was denied the top prize in the heptathlon by virtue of a less than impressive bout of javelin throwing. The British are not exactly excelling themselves at this major event. One can only hope that they are conserving their oxygen for next summer's London Olympics. Mind you, it's not proving to be a great sporting summer for Yorkshire folk either as the county cricket team continue to under-perform, whilst the county's top athlete and the Leeds rugby league team have had to settle for runners-up medals in the last few days. Wednesday 31st August The British Bankers Association have been throwing their rich toys out of the pram arising from the coalition government's proposed banking reforms. A lobbying campaign has been thrust upon George Osborne in an effort to persuade the government that the banks should not be regulated. The Business Secretary, Vince Cable, is adamant that the re-structuring of the banking sector will be pushed forth with all due speed. The bankers' apologists have been uttering the pathetic threat that if the necessary changes are implemented, then certain banks may abandon Britain (and go and exploit the populace elsewhere). Let's hope that the coalition doesn't lose its nerve and cave in to pressure from the banks. Every workplace and every institution needs a proper code with which to function. Why do banks feel that they should be exempt and be awarded carte blanche to carry on business as they please? The unfinished business of banking reform has the potential to drive a wedge between the coalition partners. The Conservative Liberals are keen to see the banking measures take effect before the next general election and Mr Cable has bullishly accused the banks of creating panic. Shameful. An eleven-year-old brat from Romford has been sentenced to eighteen months of 'rehabilitation' for stealing a black bin from Debenhams during the recent looting orgy. However, the children's charity Barnardos have pointed out that the sentencing of children has invariably been counter-productive, as young offenders have a tendency to re-offend after being incarcerated. Whatever the appropriate punishment may indeed be, something needs to be done to address the wayward antics and defiance of some of our young people. Sorry liberals, but kid gloves aren't the answer. Tonight sees the closing of the transfer window for the spoilt brats of soccer until January. Already changing employers is Scott Parker who has abandoned the failing London club of Wet Sham in favour of the failing London club of Tottensham Coldspur. Does he know what he is letting himself in for? Well, at least he isn't working in a hotel or a shop for a pittance on minimum wage, so he isn't completely foolish. Mr Dai Greene was the hero, courtesy of a four hundred metres hurdle win. However, what should we do to ensure more gold medals at next year's London Olympics? I think that we need the following events to be introduced: The 40 metres sprint for liberals who make excuses for the bad behaviour of minors; or the 200 metres freestyle swimming race for politicians and judiciary who allow international hard luck stories to move to our country. That well-rounded, level-headed model citizen Colonel Gaddafi has been broadcast on the radio again blowing the same old hot air. I think that the charming despot ought to be awarded his own radio show on Blokesport, since he is no stranger to the airwaves, while Blokesport is a rescue shelter for motormouth rogues. Meanwhile closer to home, I found myself complaining to Choosy Shoesy about how I had sent a copy of my book Alone And Asleep by Oh Sam Bin Laden to a certain woman at Radio Ulster and had not received the courtesy of a reply. Admittedly, I had thrust 'unsolicited mail' upon her, but would it have been too much of a stretch for the individual to have acknowledged receipt? The thing is that Northern Ireland has never been a land of opportunity to me. I think that the north coast is supremely beautiful and some of the people are also quite attractive too, but this land has never really welcomed me into its bosom.
