Unique mentoring workshop inspires the next generation of photography lovers, Usain Bolt attends final exhibition in Kingston

SEOUL, Korea - May 20, 2013 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. recently joined forces with the Usain Bolt Foundation (UBF) to help aspiring young photographers in Jamaica achieve their dream of a future career in photography by giving them the opportunity to take part in an exclusive workshop led by world renowned photographer, David Alan Harvey.

Working closely with the Jamaican schools network, Samsung and the UBF invited the 25 most passionate and promising young photographers to attend the three day workshop designed to help take their photography to the next level through a series of intimate seminars and practical sessions with David himself. Joining David were five international Samsung NX Mentors, professional photographers recruited by Samsung via its official Facebook page, to provide further guidance to the students as well as picking up a few tips for themselves! As part of the unique experience, each of the 25 students was given the brand new Samsung NX300 SMART Camera to use throughout the workshop and beyond, assisting them in their pursuit of a future career as a professional photographer.

Over the course of the three days, the students learned about key photographic elements such as composition, lighting and aspect, before putting their newly learned skills to the test in the field at a variety of top locations around Jamaica including Usain Bolt’s training facility at the University of West Indies in Kingston. The culmination of the workshop was an exclusive exhibition for friends and family of the students entitled “SHOT by SHOT: A Photographic Journey of 25 Dreamers”, held at the prestigious Devon House in Kingston. Among those in attendance was Usain Bolt himself, who was extremely impressed with the quality of work on display:

“The Samsung NX Junior Photographer project is such a good opportunity for Jamaica’s youth and it's great to see these talented students being given the chance to learn from the very best. Their passion for photography and life can be seen in every one of these wonderful photos, all shot on the NX300, and I’m sure I could pick up a few tips from them myself,” said Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world and six times Olympic Gold Medal Winner. “Being able to turn your dreams into reality is something I know a bit about myself and I have no doubt we will be seeing many on these guys on the global stage very soon."

The NX300 is the perfect companion for any aspiring photographer thanks to key features including a super-fast, accurate Hybrid Auto Focus system and 1/6000 sec shutter speed for capturing even life’s most fleeting moments. The NX300’s faster than ever dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity also lets you upload your photos straight to social networking sites or send them to your smartphone simply and easily with its AutoShare function, right from the camera. The NX300 features an elegant retro modern design and is available in brown, white and black.

"We're honored to be working with the Usain Bolt Foundation, David Alan Harvey and most importantly, the gifted group of aspiring photographers here today," said Young Dae Sin, Head of Samsung Miami Branch. "At Samsung, we always strive to share our expertise with those who have a passion for photography. The NX300 is the perfect partner for those who value high quality images, unlocking the creative potential in its users and through the guidance of Mr Harvey and the Photo Mentors, we are more than confident that these 25 students will continue to shoot and share outstanding images on their NX300s for many years to come."

A sample from a nice publication

Friday 26th August

In 1978 there was a viewspaper headline which exclaimed 'Scotland's shame'. This was a consequence of the national soccer team's humiliation at the World Cup finals. Well, I'm not sure that the débacle of 1978 even begins to compare with the embarrassing exits of Glasgow Strangers and wee Glasgow Wannabees last night in a qualifying round of the mediocre Europa League. Whilst Celtic failed twice to beat FC Sion of Switzerland, their dear friends Rangers were equally unsuccessful against Maribor of Slovakia. The Old Firm have won two European trophies and contested about seven European finals, but any notion that they are 'giants' is frankly delusional. Yes the Old Firm are afflicted with the Gaddafi complex.

Speaking of Rangers (the Queen's Park variety), QPR have acquired the services of Joey Barton. Mr B is a talented but loose cannon, so the very best of luck to both he and his new employers.

Elsewhere in soccer, the European champions Barcelona defeated Porto two goals to nil to help themselves to the European Super Cup.

Yesterday in Blighty it was reported that the annual immigration figures revealed that something like 237,000 more people were entering Britain than leaving it. This does not meet with the satisfaction of the Conservative Party which has pledged its intent to decrease the margin to no more than an annual surplus of ten thousand. The Tories are blaming Labour for their encouragement of immigration, or at least an impotent attempt to stem the tide. Yes there are many talented people who come to these shores and their work ethic and even moral values are a welcome inclusion. However, I will never understand the logic of immigration when the state has homeless people and millions of jobless people. It is not about objecting to other races, but I reckon that each nation ought to house all its citizens and employ them all before opening the doors to others. It's rather like allowing people to stay at your house and eat your food while your children sleep on the floor and eat the leftovers. Would that be sensible? Not exactly!

Tonight I had an excellent session of conversation and cuisine with new friends from church. The remarkable thing is that the host is someone who I didn't initially warm to nor presumably he with me. However, a few months down the line he is proof positive that the people whom we are inclined to write off are actually the ones who are there for us in the long run, while those whom we take an initial liking to don't live up to the high expectations. People are weird and not always easy to predict.

Despite their embarrassing European exit, it appears that wee Glasgow Wannabees may win a reprieve on account of Switzerland's FC Sion fielding ineligible players. Oh the luck of the Irish.

Mind you, the Oirish were once again luckless and lack lustre in losing by twenty points to nine to England in their final pre-World Cup warm-up rugby match. Of course, nobody will remember the four back-to-back defeats if they rise to the occasion at the World Cup, but one cannot help but feel that while Ireland tend to excel themselves at the Six Nations, they seem to be out of their depth on the biggest stage of all. England by contrast are now in fine fettle and can enthuse for the time being at the blossoming midfield pairing of the MTs, Mike Tindall and Manu Tuilagi.

In the English soccer Premiership, both the title pretenders Chelsea and Liverpool recorded three-one home wins, with the latter temporarily taking up residence on the top perch. It was also a good afternoon for their fellow-Merseysiders, Everton, whose victory against Blackburn Rovers owed a lot to proficiency at penalties, with Rovers missing twice and the Toffees then showing their opponents how to successfully convert a spot kick.

Meanwhile closer to the ranch, I attended the 'Black Saturday' parade in Limavady, and a mighty fine parade it was too. Oh yes I have mixed feelings about Ulster's endless supply of parades, but here was an occasion when one was treated to a tremendous variety of bands, including pipe bands, accordion bands, even a delightful silver band, as well as plenty of flute bands which ranged from quality 'park bands' to the ilk which prefer to batter the living daylights out of their dubious tunes.

Oh and for the uninitiated, the last Saturday in August demonstrations are organised by the Royal Black institution. This pseudo-Christian outfit is effectively a fusion of the Orange Disorder and the freemasons. Some people are concerned at such secret societies which incidentally contain members of other secret societies, namely paramilitaries. I on the other hand am more concerned about the organisation's commitment to Jesus Christ. Far too many degrees in this institution's preceptories are heavily based on Old Testament scripture. This is fine up to a point, but the gospel of salvation by means of one man, Jesus, is largely airbrushed out of the banners which are more preoccupied with Old Testament imagery. Anyhow, what remains most perplexing of all is the continuing and prolonged absence of royal personages from the Royal Black's parades!

Normal business resumed at the Belgian Grand Prix where Sebastian Vettel was first to see the chequered flag ahead of team-mate Mark Webber and then Britain's Jenson Button. Vettel's coronation as the 2011 Formula One world champion is now on the horizon.

Over in London town, Tottensham Hotspur were so galvanised by their routine humiliation at Old Trafford that they went out this afternoon and proceeded to lose five goals to one to the rampant, rich Manchester Mercenaries. Mr Dzeko scored a mere four goals. Each one probably equates to twenty or thirty thousand pounds. After this latest massacre, I wonder if the has-beens of Spurs will request another judicial review.

However, the pitiful performance of the yesterday's men of Tottensham Coldspur was inconsequential compared to the crushing of Arse-nil at Old Trafford. Poor Arsène Wenger's hapless bunch succumbed to ManUre to the tune of an incredulous eight goals to two. Wayne Looney helped himself to a hat-trick. One would hope that at least on this occasion, Mr Wenger won't suggest that scandalous bad luck or refereeing was to blame. These two results amounted to a staggering final score of Manchester thirteen goals, north London three. It's a funny old game.

North of Hadrian's Wall, the two Glasgow also-rans returned to bullying lesser Scottish teams, with each winning two goals to nil. Clearly the SPL (the Slow Progress League) isn't in the same league as the Europa League.

Over the Atlantic reservoir, Hurricane Irene is creating havoc in New York. Gee, what is it with those silly Yanks and naming each hurricane? It humanises each unwanted intruder and makes such terrifying phenomena seem like cuddly toys. 'Oh that Irene character was a bit of a rascal.' Oh just number the darn things instead of transforming these life-threatening events into domestic pets with nice names.

Rumour has it that Mr Gaddafi wants to 'negotiate'. Is he having a laugh or what? It must admittedly be a bit demoralising for the old codger to now find himself jobless and homeless. I reckon a new career as a stand-up comedian would be his most realistic way forward. Having said that, more news is emerging of vindictive atrocities by the ancien régime of Libya in its last days, and this is certainly no laughing matter.

The UK government is also hoping that the new Libyan administration will co-operate fully in the pursuit of the killer of WPC Yvonne Fletcher. Surely it is the very least they can do in return for Britain's support and aid.

As the violence in Libya travels to the besieged Gaddafi stronghold of Sirte, the subject of al-Megrahi is rearing its ugly head again. Alex Salmond has insisted that the American and British governments can rattle their sabres as much as they like, but Scotland has its own jurisdiction and thus it is solely a matter for the law of Scotland whether the convicted bomber should be re-arrested. In the event, it now transpires that this felon is in a coma and at death's door. Funny how he suddenly has taken a turn for the worse as the Gaddafi banana republic has been upended. This man does have a history of 'dying'. Call me a handsome and talented cynic, but maybe al-Megrahi may remain in a coma for several years to come?

Dear old Arsène Wenger must be wishing that he was in a coma after the Old Trafford massacre. His employers have responded to the slaughter by awarding free tickets to the suffering fans who made the trip to Manchester yesterday. Monsieur Wenger however will soldier on. Yes there is no point whatsoever in dismissing him unless there is a better candidate to be hired as his replacement. Having said that, one does get the impression that the hierarchy at Arse-nil regard Arsène as an umbilical cord that they dare not remove. It's all very well maintaining continuity and stability, but surely heads must roll after the Gunners conceded eight goals for the first time in a match since 1896.

Elsewhere in London, the locals of Notting Hill were hosting Europe's biggest street party. Fortunately the carnival has not spilled over into a riot.

Meanwhile the world of sport is still reeling from the shock of the great Usain Bolt being evicted from the one hundred metres final at the World Championships after he was guilty of a false start. It does seem a bit harsh to disqualify any athlete for one false start. As a consequence of the new draconian law, the world governing body of athletics now has some egg on its face because it's party-pooper regulation has cheated the world of a race between the world's best. Can we have some sanity restored please?

Back in Blighty, there is no live Premiership soccer tussle tonight. This is because of the awful international matches that are next on the agenda. It is questionable whether the footie followers care as much for internationals as they do for club football. It's hard to get excited when you know that England will flop at the finals tournament and Scotland won't even qualify.

As the new government's forces intensify their imminent encirclement of Sirte, negotiations are taking place to prevent this location being reduced to rubble. What intrigues me about the civil war in Libya plus other conflicts in the Arab world is the brutality and cruelty that Muslims inflict upon one another. We hear a lot of drivel about how the Americans and Brits should not interfere in Islamic countries, but the harsh reality is that if the Shias, the Sunnis, and all the other groups in Palestine, Libya, and north Africa are left to their own devices, they simply tear lumps out of each other. So much for Islamic unity. So much for observing the Koran.

Oh would somebody hurry up and catch that dastardly fugitive Gaddafi, as this Libyan lark is growing progressively tedious. Funnily enough, the old tyrant's family have been welcomed with open arms by neighbouring Algeria. The latter are providing the flimsy excuse that their hospitality is a humanitarian gesture. I wonder if they are being paid handsomely to give refuge to the Gaddafi household. Why else would anyone want to admit into their midst north Africa's answer to the Kray family?

In Libya itself, the National Transitional Council have pronounced the leading suspect in the murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher as himself dead. Apparently the fiend in question was killed in a feud amongst pro-Gaddafi supporters. Oh again this looks like quite a convenient yarn. Undeterred, William Hague has re-iterated that a police investigation will be pursued.

In south Korea at the athletics World Championships, Britain's golden girl had to make do with silver, as Jessica Ennis was denied the top prize in the heptathlon by virtue of a less than impressive bout of javelin throwing. The British are not exactly excelling themselves at this major event. One can only hope that they are conserving their oxygen for next summer's London Olympics. Mind you, it's not proving to be a great sporting summer for Yorkshire folk either as the county cricket team continue to under-perform, whilst the county's top athlete and the Leeds rugby league team have had to settle for runners-up medals in the last few days.

Back on my planet, I have applied for more jobs in the last week than I have probably done in the last year. I suspect that recruiters wish for fresh-faced twenty-something graduates rather than cantankerous forty-somethings. Or could it be that certain silly employers opt for the pretty young thing for lecherous reasons? Gosh aren't some employers really brainless? Is it any wonder that they don't hold on to their staff?

The British Bankers Association have been throwing their rich toys out of the pram arising from the coalition government's proposed banking reforms. A lobbying campaign has been thrust upon George Osborne in an effort to persuade the government that the banks should not be regulated. The Business Secretary, Vince Cable, is adamant that the re-structuring of the banking sector will be pushed forth with all due speed. The bankers' apologists have been uttering the pathetic threat that if the necessary changes are implemented, then certain banks may abandon Britain (and go and exploit the populace elsewhere). Let's hope that the coalition doesn't lose its nerve and cave in to pressure from the banks. Every workplace and every institution needs a proper code with which to function. Why do banks feel that they should be exempt and be awarded carte blanche to carry on business as they please?

The unfinished business of banking reform has the potential to drive a wedge between the coalition partners. The Conservative Liberals are keen to see the banking measures take effect before the next general election and Mr Cable has bullishly accused the banks of creating panic. Shameful.

An eleven-year-old brat from Romford has been sentenced to eighteen months of 'rehabilitation' for stealing a black bin from Debenhams during the recent looting orgy. However, the children's charity Barnardos have pointed out that the sentencing of children has invariably been counter-productive, as young offenders have a tendency to re-offend after being incarcerated. Whatever the appropriate punishment may indeed be, something needs to be done to address the wayward antics and defiance of some of our young people. Sorry liberals, but kid gloves aren't the answer.

Tonight sees the closing of the transfer window for the spoilt brats of soccer until January. Already changing employers is Scott Parker who has abandoned the failing London club of Wet Sham in favour of the failing London club of Tottensham Coldspur. Does he know what he is letting himself in for? Well, at least he isn't working in a hotel or a shop for a pittance on minimum wage, so he isn't completely foolish.

In the final hours of the opened window, there was indeed a frenzy of panic transactions, much like the silly people scurrying around the shops on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. Mikel Arteta has swapped Evercrap for Arse-nil. I believe that this is known as leaping out of the frying pan and into the fire.

A silly young woman from Clacton has been released on bail after she had been arrested for inciting a riot via Blackberry. She had suggested let's burn a few cars for a laugh, ha ha. My suggestion is let's put her in the stocks or the pillory and pelt her with blackberries for a laugh, ha ha.

Lots of military personnel are receiving redundancy today, but not necessarily for a laugh, ha ha. I wish that I would get offered redundancy. I am after all feeling rather redundant, so where is my golden handshake?

Speaking of golden, the under-achieving Brits have finally earned a gold medal at the athletics World Championships. Mr Dai Greene was the hero, courtesy of a four hundred metres hurdle win. However, what should we do to ensure more gold medals at next year's London Olympics? I think that we need the following events to be introduced: The 40 metres sprint for liberals who make excuses for the bad behaviour of minors; or the 200 metres freestyle swimming race for politicians and judiciary who allow international hard luck stories to move to our country.

That well-rounded, level-headed model citizen Colonel Gaddafi has been broadcast on the radio again blowing the same old hot air. I think that the charming despot ought to be awarded his own radio show on Blokesport, since he is no stranger to the airwaves, while Blokesport is a rescue shelter for motormouth rogues.

Meanwhile closer to home, I found myself complaining to Choosy Shoesy about how I had sent a copy of my book Alone And Asleep by Oh Sam Bin Laden to a certain woman at Radio Ulster and had not received the courtesy of a reply. Admittedly, I had thrust 'unsolicited mail' upon her, but would it have been too much of a stretch for the individual to have acknowledged receipt? The thing is that Northern Ireland has never been a land of opportunity to me. I think that the north coast is supremely beautiful and some of the people are also quite attractive too, but this land has never really welcomed me into its bosom. Mind you, Jesus Christ did state that a prophet is not welcomed or is without honour in his home town.
Paul the great evangelist exhorted his fellow would-be evangelists that if any should go to a town and be rejected, then he should leave that location and shake the dust off his sandals. Well, I'm now boycotting Radio Ulcer.

You could describe my action as immature. In my defence, your honour, I believe that we should all surround ourselves with people who care for us and value us. Therefore those who don't value me become an irrelevance.
