Nigeria: Caught in A Deadly Oil Catch-22

Nigeria generates more than 14% of its GDP from oil exports. Those exports account for 98% of the country's export earnings, and close to 83% of federal government revenue. Nigeria may have more than 22 billion barrels in proven reserves, according to the United States Energy Information Administration. Nigeria is the tenth-most oil rich nation on Earth, with 159 oil fields and about 1,481 oil wells in operation.

The numbers look more than promising. On paper, this country should be a prime destination for investment dollars and oil development. So why is Nigeria's natural petroleum wealth on the verge of destroying a large part of the country?

This is a troubling situation in which there's no clear bad guy. The Nigerian federal government, multinational oil companies, and disadvantaged locals are all bad actors in some way.

A Curse in a Land of Plenty

Most of Nigeria's oil lies in the Niger Delta Basin. The Niger River flows through this megadiverse land on its way to the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. The region is is home to about 31 million of Nigeria's 170 million people. Oil extraction started in the region in the 1950s, before the country gained its independence from the United Kingdom and accelerated thereafter. Nigeria's experiences with kleptocratic military dictatorships, under Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha brought a host of ills to the country. Not least of which was the generals' "mismanagement" of billions in oil revenues resulting from the Gulf War spike in world oil prices. Oil companies, such as Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE:RDS.A), Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), and Total SA (NYSE:TOT) openly colluded with these brutal dictators, sending in their own private armies to secure the supply of oil, doing whatever was necessary to keep the black stuff flowing.

Many popular resistance organizations, like the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, emerged to assert their right to a share of the Delta's oil wealth. Sometimes nonviolent, but just as often quite violent, these groups engaged in various acts of armed and nonviolent resistance. The world was shocked when the Abacha regime executed writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, who had been among the loudest voices decrying the regime - and Royal Dutch Shell - in their destruction of the Niger Delta and the displacement and marginalization of its people.

Militants on the Warpath Again

Delta militants waged an effective war against the Nigerian government and Western oil companies for over a decade. These militants targeted Nigerian troops and police, and would kidnap oil workers from time to time. Most were scrupulously careful to avoid targeting Nigerian civilians. At the restoration of democracy, the militants' captains were paid off en masse, in mostly undisclosed sums, to lay down their arms. And they did so... for a time. The payoff never trickled down to the middling ranks, and did little to ease the plight of smallholders in the Delta. Now the militants are on the march once again.

It was thought that when democracy returned to Nigeria in 1999, oil revenues might begin to be more equitably distributed, that the environment might begin to be better protected. Nothing like this has happened, some 15 years after the restoration of popular rule. In fact, things may be worse now. Now, residents of the Niger Delta have the lowest life expectancy in all of Nigeria. The oil infrastructure of the region hasn't really been upgraded since the period ending in the 1980s. The physical realities of the Niger Delta necessitate the existence of thousands of miles of pipeline.

A Scene From Dante's Inferno

These long, untended pipelines are regularly tapped by poor residents. The stolen oil is then refined by pirates - oil pirates - in small, isolated, makeshift refineries. A recent VICE report described one of these makeshift refineries as "hell on Earth," where volatile, toxic oil flowed freely into the river, as uncontrollable flares erupted from the homemade devices. What dry ground there was was covered with a kind of tar. The result of this nasty business is home brewed petroleum products; gasoline, kerosene, and diesel, which are taken upcountry and sold on the streets of Nigeria's teeming cities. One masked interviewee said he could make as much as $70 per day - a king's ransom in a region where most live on $1 - $1.50 a day. There is tremendous economic opportunity in oil piracy, at the cost of near-total ecocide.

And it is an ecocide, a neologism coined to describe the wholesale destruction of entire ecosystems. As noted, 31 million people live in the Niger Delta among thousands of species of plants and animals. All things being equal, the Delta would provide a generous living to those fortunate enough to live there. But the equation is madly out of balance. The illegal pipeline taps result in not-inconsiderable spills, and, on occasion deadly explosions. But that is on top of what's officially recorded as coming from the creaking infrastructure. It's been reported that there are refineries in Nigeria where permanent daylight prevails. The flaring never stops, and each flare represents lost natural gas and pollution added to the atmosphere.

Exxon Valdez Forever

It's been estimated that the cumulative spill in the Niger Delta amounts to an Exxon Valdez-scale event every year for the past 50 years or so - 11 million gallons of oil each year, for a total of 546 million gallons. Large spills routinely go unaddressed for a month or more, and the local environment dies in turn. Were this to happen in Alaska, or California, or the Gulf Coast, or Brittany, the outrage would be intense.

The response to the Deepwater Horizon disaster of 2010 brought some cutting edge oil technology to bear. The well itself used quite a few advanced techniques. And still it all failed. In Nigeria, the oil infrastructure is badly outdated, and a pointless blame game ensues. The oil companies claim they can't invest in better infrastructure until they're no longer targeted. The people claim they need to attack oil installations to make a living. The government tells the people to back off the oil companies, and the oil companies to clean up their act. Then the oil companies claim they can't... The people claim they must... The government tells... and so on and so on. All the while, the land dies, the people die, the soldiers die, and nothing much ever changes. A dreary chain of cause and effect continues unbroken, leaving bodies, a blasted landscape, and huge oil profits in its wake.

Where To Turn?

Investors looking to avoid the horrible situation in Nigeria - either for reasons of conscience or prudence or both - would be better served looking for opportunities in the United States itself. It's true that there is corruption and inefficiency. This is true of nearly anywhere on Earth where men drag oil up from the depths. But the situation in this emerging oil producer is much better. The level of transparency is higher, wages are better, infrastructure is safer, and conditions are such that oil companies don't overtly abuse the public - much.

Recent developments in the United States, for instance in the Bakken, make the country the emerging market to bet on.

I am someone who likes to be organised and have a plan in place, this was no different when it came to pregnancy, giving birth and becoming a mum. We found out what we were having so I could have the right colours in the room, I read all the books people suggested, so I felt like I knew what was going on, we went to all the birthing classes and we felt like we had the whole situation under control. There were a few pregnancy challenges, but we were in wonderful hands with our obstetrician and the birth all went smoothly. We were all completely organised, I had this new mother thing down pat and ready to head home to play happy families.

It was the things that I hadn't read about or been taught in our classes, that became the challenges and for me this is one of a few that I believe are so important and we should all be taught about during pregnancy, because it is one of the most common challenges that most parents face and it wasn't until I really began researching more and more about Pregnancy, becoming a human behaviour specialist and working with many with Post Natal Depression, did I realise how common it was because having a baby changes you and it certainly changes your marriage and if you don't work on it before hand to ensure your bond is as strong as ever, you are on the same page and heading in the same direction, then you may be in for a challenge. We have had to repair our marriage over and over, because it was something we hadn't really focused on. To give ourselves some credit we hadn't been together all that long before this miraculous journey bestowed us, but working with many women and couples  and being a volunteer for Beyond Blue, it is something I see time and time again.

As a mother the changes are huge that occur, you tap into emotions you never knew you had, your body changes in phenomenal ways, you truly dig deep into your core and spiritually you come alive also. I found it really difficult to talk about how I was feeling and tried to pretend it was all ok, because when I look at it now, I suppose I didn't have the words to express how I felt, it was very surreal. The lack of communication about it, soon became distance of the beautiful bond we had and soon this became a real disconnection between the two of us which resulted in having differences which would then turn into arguments. One of the biggest things we didn't realise we had was we hadn't set a common goal for how we planned this part of the journey to be. There are stats out there suggesting that this is extremely common and scarily for approx. 92% of parents.

This is partly what sparked my research into pregnancy & parenting and once I became a Human Behaviour Specialist and using amazing Human Behaviour Profiling tools and specialising in Pregnancy, relationships and particurlarly Post Natal Depression and having been struck down by it myself. I really began to understand the depths of the impact this change can have on relationships and just how common it was and really began to identify common patterns and am able to identify it within a matter of minutes of talking to someone. Some of the patterns I see are people on a continuous emotional rollercoaster, completely under an illusion of how their life is but never has their expectations met, feeling completely overwhelmed when a challenge comes along, being on a completely different page to their partner, felt like their life had changed for the best, but their partner had changed and not in a great way, continually blaming one another for the way they feel and how their life had changed, feeling like they aren't loved or giving love anymore, don't have anything in common or to talk about.

A common thing I hear, is how did I not see this side to my partner before? And my answer to this is most often, that the gaps were most likely already there, however you never had a life change or challenge as big as this to truly bring them to surface or understand that there were differences and then that is how I work with them to understand the differences they have and how you adapt your new journey to suit them both and help them to truly understand the depths of one another so that the challenges they face are far more easily solved.

The current ante-natal classes are extremely important, for the birth of your child and no matter how many classes you do, you will never be prepared for the changes that you are about to endure 100%. Things are changing and on the move from having been people only wanting to know the mechanics of birth and wanting to understand more of what does this mean for me? More people are wanting to develop on a personal level and are becoming far more aware of things like Post- Natal Depression. People are seeking more answers for beyond the pregnancy, whereas before all they wanted was information about their pregnancy and the birth, beyond that wasn't even spoken about. As a Pregnancy and Post Natal Depression Human Behaviour Specialist along with many other experts in the industry we have evidence and tools to know what makes a family struggle or what propels them to thrive and that having this awareness and understanding there is proof this information truly makes a difference for the whole family on this journey. With Post-Natal Depression being one of the largest outcomes of relationship break down, by working on it before hand and identifying your risk has been found to reduce the chances of PND by approx. 60%, which to me is huge.

With so much research being done all the time and the awareness around PND and relationship challenges, there are so many more ways that people can begin their journey and giving every member the best possible start to this adventure. Some of these are:
•Understand the different ways in which you and your partner think and behave before the life change occurs
•Address any differences that you have before hand so that they aren't exaggerated when the change occurs, clear the air with one another
•Set yourself a realistic common goal for your relationship before, during and after pregnancy
•Expect that there will be challenges but take steps prior to ensure you are both on the same page and can take these on together
•Expect your life will be different for a while and embrace the changes and work through things together and create the family life that you are after
•Connect with lots of like minded people before hand, during and after
•Surround yourself with people you can go to for help if you need it, but make sure you don't think your are superwoman or superman, ask for the help, accept into your life and be the driver of the change.
• Truly understand yourself and your emotions, because there will be ups and downs, but if you understand you it will make it a lot easier to push through.
•Work through any differences you have together and openly so that it brings you closer and stronger, instead of crumbling your relationship and pushing you apart.
•Ensure you do things to stay connected to one another, make time for one another, have date nights, speak openly, tell each other I love you as many times a day as you can, support one another, stay connected physically through hugs, kisses, passion and sex. And anything else that works for you as a couple that will keep you connected, as the strength of your connection with one another will help push you through anything.
The bond and love you have for one another will set the foundations for your family the longevity of your relationship and the legacy you will leave for your children.

Have a wonderful day everyone and know that you deserve to have the best start to a wonderful new journey, so Make A Difference today in your Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond adventure.

Lots of Love

A Reprobate Mind C anaChristianbeturned overto a reprobate mind? I just wonder because there are some people who seem to fall away from God and never desire to go back.

O ne thing that seems totrouble many believers is the thought of finally falling away from God – being “turned over to a reprobate mind” as you have put it. It also seems the potential is very great when someone who professes to be saved falls away from the faith. Then, we realize how weak and sinful we are. But we also need to realize how great the grace of God is. L et’slookatthe wordreprobate for just a moment. A primary meaning of reprobate is “rejected.” Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines it as “not enduring proof or trial; not of standard purity or fineness; disallowed; rejected.” This is also a Bible definition found in the verse you quoted:

Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the LORD hath rejected them. Jeremiah 6:30 S ilverthat was unabletoberefined was considered worthless, i.e., reprobate, and was to be rejected. Because of Israel’s refusal to get right with God, they are compared to reprobate silver because God had rejected them. B utrejectionis only partofthe definition. In Romans 1:28, we read of those who “God gave …over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.” Here, the meaning is not only of rejection but abandonment. These people had gone so far in sin, “they did not like to retain God in their knowledge,” and so God gave them what they wanted. They did not want God, righteousness, holiness, cleanness, or purity, so God “gave them over.” These people are reprobate because of their hatred toward God. N ow, the questionis, werethese people really saved? It would do well to compare the traits of saved people with those of the reprobate. Saved people are new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17) who have repented of their sinful life (1 Thessalonians 1:9) and who bring forth the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23). Their attitudes toward God, Christ, the Bible, and sin have changed, and this is manifested in their daily lives. They desire to do good works (Ephesians 2:10), love the brethren (1 John 3:14) and to keep themselves unspotted from the world (James 1:27). Oh sure, saved people fall short, but they will confess their sins (1 John 1:9) to maintain fellowship with God. T he reprobate ontheotherhand wants no real knowledge of God (Romans 1:28). Instead of living holy and bringing forth good works, their lifestyle is manifestly different from the saint. Paul says they are “… filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful” (Romans 1:29-31). Could it be said that a saved person, washed in the blood of Christ, was a hater of God? Do the saints invent evil things? Reprobates are without understanding, yet John tells the saints concerning false prophets, “ye need not that any man teach you” (1 John 2:27). Paul goes on to say that these people know full well the judgment of God upon those who do these things, yet they continue to do them. Further, they not only blatantly sin against God, but “they have pleasure in them that do them” (Romans 1:32). No, there is a great gulf fixed between the reprobate and the child of God. B uttogettothe heartofyour question, what about those who profess salvation yet turn away?” After all, the people we just described hate God and have no qualms about openly showing their hatred for him. The more I read the Bible, the more I see the distinction between true believers and those who only profess to be. Let’s consider a few scriptures:

16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. P aul saysthese people, who professed they knew God, were reprobate. How can this be? The answer is found in the context of the preceding verse:

Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. Titus 1:15 T he “they” of verse 16arepreviously described in this verse as “unbelieving.” Yes, they professed to know God, but they were reprobate. Why were they reprobated? Because they did not believe. These people were never saved. The same can be said for those described in 1 John 2:19

They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 1 John 2:19 T hosewholeftthefaith were “notof us.” They were never saved. Now this teaching lines up with the words of our Lord himself. Consider this text:

John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; N otice the implication. Those who continue in the word of Christ (i.e., those who are truly converted to God through repentance and faith) are Christ’s disciples indeed; therefore, those who do not continue in his word are not his disciples. This means that a great number of people who have made an intellectual or emotional “decision” and finally fall away were never truly born again. S ince ChristianscontinueinChrist’s word, they could never be turned over to a reprobate mind. A believer may get to the point where his faith is weak or fall into sin and, consequently, go so far as to forget “that he was purged from his old sins” (2 Peter 1:9), but he could never be rejected or abandoned by God. The scripture says that “if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” (2 Timothy 2:13). In John 6:37, we read these comforting words, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” The Lord Jesus has promised that he will not cast out – not reject – any one who comes to him. This blessed assurance from the lips of the Saviour himself leaves out any possibility of reprobation. And Christ says to those who are saved “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). It should be a great blessing to know that the believer will never be rejected or abandoned by God. The Lord “knoweth them that trust in him,” and you can be assured they will never be reprobated. Thank God for His wonderful salvation in Christ. John Nichols
