I'm told Ron Borges of the Boston Globe is a well-respected, outstanding journalist who has been this far longer than I have. But as Ron Burgundy once suggested, Borges should probably sit out a few plays, maybe "Take it easy, Champ" in regard to his combative defense of Terrell Owens' Hall of Fame snub.

Nothing against Terrell Owens' attitude as a player, but what all his avalanche of supporters (claiming that he should be in the Hall of Fame) should NOT ignore how his 2006 teammate Terry Glenn's average yards per catch of 17.9 through 22 games during 2004-'05 (before Owens arrived in Dallas) completely fell off to 15.0 yards per catch with Owens as his teammate. What do those Terry Glenn's stats have to do with Terrell Owens? Everything. After all, it is about making your team better, and how you make your team better is making your teammates better. Owens make Glenn better? Quite the opposite.
Two years before, Owens comeback that made it possible for him to play in SB 39 really was heroic (as I said at the top, nothing against his attitude), but those 133 yards were meaningless as the Eagles three very long touchdown drives of 81, 74, and 79 yards were not contributed to practically at all by Owens who also inexplicably stopped dead in his tracks on one play that caused a McNabb INT which Eagle radio announcer asked,'Where was he throwing?" On the play, McNabb was throwing where Owens was running until Owens stopped for no reason. Nobody criticized Owens for it though. You see, I really am talking about everything that happened on the field.
Saying that Owens was the only Eagle that showed up for SB 39 is absurd when in fact the Eagles had three touchdown drives of 74 yards or longer to keep them in the game without virtually help from Owens on any of those TD drives. Absurd is also crediting Owens for helping the Eagles make it to that Super Bowl when he was injured for the playoffs. So his avalanche of supporters credit Owens for the Eagles getting home-field advantage for the '04 playoffs but do they really think that home-field advantage in NFC Title game was something new to Philadelphia at the time??!! It was something that the Eagles previously lacked??!! Eagles had that same home-field advantage in previous two NFC Title games (and that the Eagles were so thoroughly outplayed in their '02 and '03 NFC Title games that they hosted is quite symbolic of home-field advantage being way more of a regular season type of factor than it is in the playoffs anyway). Eagles getting thoroughly outplayed in '02 and '03 NFC Title games that they hosted showed home-field advantage did not help them then because it was not their time. 2004 was their time to win NFC, with or without Owens? No, it was their time WITHOUT OWENS! That was proven as well.
As for saying that 2005 Eagles fell apart without Owens, they are just so sure that they would not have crashed had they not suspended Owens. Ridiculous for them to think that, and please note that a player cannot help a team when he forces them to suspend him. However once they permanently cut Owens after 2005 season, Eagles went back to winning three playoff games over the next three seasons and of course they would. They won playoff games without him while he was on the roster so their playoff game-winning ways continued after his departure.
After Owens left Dallas, Cowboys won their first playoff game in 13 years.
Back in San Francisco, he began in 1996, and lost a home game (and the NFC West) to Carolina 30-24 when he dropped a perfect pass in the final minutes that ended up as a Panther INT. The next year, Owens racked up stats in a foggy NFC Title game loss to Green Bay 23-10. But when you watch the 1997 NFC Title game on film, Owens' numerous blunders destroyed 49er chances that day. After 1997, Green Bay starts rebuilding their defensive secondary as Evans and Robinson are released, which left Packers without a secondary for the time being because their rebuilding was not going to happen overnight(with apologies and exception noted for the great SS Lee Roy Butler #36 who usually throughout his career played lined up closer to the line of scrimmage than against WRs anyway). Their secondary rebuilding was more like pre-rebuilding caused 1998 Packers' defense to play like pure garbage all season. In 1998 Wild-Card game, Green Bay's pre-rebuilding defensive backfield gave Owens numerous chances but he dropped so many passes until the last one that everybody insists on remembering. After the game, 49er SS Tim McDonald said,"Everybody's always criticizing our DBs. Well think how Green Bay DBs feel." Well that is the whole (and Tim McDonald's point as well)of the real story of that game being exciting only because neither team could play defense (exception to Charles Haley forcing a Brett Favre INT on the opening 3rd quarter drive in Haley's attempt to turn 49ers 17-10 halftime deficit into a tie game)...and Green Bay's inability to cover WRs throughout 1998 gave Owens numerous chances to catch passes that he dropped until the very last one. There were three Packers DBs there but because none were named Lee Roy Butler, the Packers' sorry 1998 Defensive Backfield being at the pre-rebuilding state made Owens look like the hero of the game, or atleast look like it for those fans with selective amnesia.
2001 49ers playoff fate was set(Wild-Card at best) after week 2 when Owens dropped just about anything thrown his way again in a critical 37-30 loss to Rams. After the game, Owens said,"I am atleast as good if not better than (Rams') Issac Bruce."
Next month, Owens dropped a perfect pass in overtime to lose at Chicago whose Mike Brown caught perfectly Owens' drop/deflection before Brown returned it for the TD to end the overtime and the game. Afterwards Owens blamed loss on Coach Mariucci threw the game and lost it intentionally. Owens' dropped overtime pass-turned INT returned for a TD looked so bad, it may have looked as though it was Owens' actually being paid off, UNLESS one could see the obvious, that Owens dropping passes is the rule and not exception. Then in 2001 Wild-card 49er playoff loss at Green Bay, one must just watch a video of that 26-16 game to fully understand how useless Owens was that game. Afterwards, Owens blames the loss on a lack of passes being thrown his way. But there WERE plenty of passes thrown his way in the 2001 Wild card loss at Green Bay, there were just way more passes thrown his way than there was of his reception total for that game. Owens made minimal production of it as he did 5 years later in the Dallas-Seattle Wild-Card game.
As for people thinking that looking at stats is how to make Hall of Fame decisions, do those people just want to take the short-cut by letting stats determine what is Hall of Fame caliber? Deep-down inside, any fans of any team-sport know that there is such a thing as players that have great stats but who were not really great players. Owens was quite obviously one of them, and remember I mentioned all this stuff above while keeping everything I mentioned to strictly to what happened on the football field (exception noted '05 Eagle suspension) as I said I would.
