Basically, a supermoon occurs when it is a full moon... SUPER MOON, JUNE 23, 2013 What Is A Supermoon? Basically, a supermoon occurs when it is a full moon, and the elliptical orbit of the moon is closest to the Earth. The term supermoon is used in reference to the apparent increase in size of tee moon disk as observed from Earth. It may be worth noting that the term ‘supermoon’ is used by modern astrologists, not astronomers. The term was originally defined as a new moon which occurs with the Moon at or near its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (Nolle 1979). To simplify the occurrence; the Earth, Moon and Sun are all inline, and the Moon is in it’s nearest approach to Earth. Usually, astronomers refer to the occurrence as the ‘perigee-syzgy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system’, and refer to it as perigee-syzgy. ‘Perigee’ is the point in which the Moon is at the point it it’s orbit that is closest to Earth, and ‘syzgy’ is a full moon (when the Earth and Sun are aligned). On average, about once a year there is a full moon (‘syzgy’) within a few hours of a ‘perigee’. There have been a number of claims and superstitions that the supermoon phenomenon is associated with an increased risk of natural disasters. However, the majority of the evidence for these claims is widely held to be unconvincing. During a supermoon occurrence, it is estimated that the moon appears roughly 11% larger, and 30% brighter. While this may seem like a fairly significant differentiation, the typical observer would not notice the difference. It may be worth reminding readers that photographers can easily accentuate the characteristics of the supermoon occurrence with the usage of telephoto lenses and telescopes.
