On August 2nd, 2016 at the legendary Cain's Ballroom in the Brady District of Downtown Tulsa, an event happened that simply blew my mind. Kids being a part of live music creation and ABSOLUTELY SLAYIN’ IT!!! I don’t mean, “…they’re good for kids.” I mean, these kids friggin ROCK!!!

The 12 bands that played were all unique unto themselves, but all had one thing on their mind. To play their very best and make the best music they can. The program is called Summer Jam and is the creation of Mac and Dustin of Oklahoma Music Academy. Yes…it could be call Rock and Roll Academy or School of Rock…but these bands are comprised of the students at Oklahoma Music Academy. These talented musicians have only a few weeks to nail down the material and prepare for their live show at Cain’s Ballroom.

During soundcheck of the gear, I was reminded how good the sound is at Cain’s Ballroom. The Sakae Drums (Sakae Rhythm Musical Instrument Ltd.) Celestial Kit in Limited Edition Tamo Ash outfitted with amazing Evans Drumheads sounded like a kit possessed when Dustin played it. The hair on my arm stood up on end and I think I had to excuse myself from the floor for a moment. I digress… With the Celestial mic’d and raring to go, the Meinl Cymbals Byzance Cymbals mounted atop the gleaming Gibraltar Hardware all came to life in one fail swoop. Admittedly, I was mesmerized.

As the bands were running through their soundcheck…I continued to be more and more impressed with the music choices of these bands. All over the map and in many cases performed better than their adult counterparts currently working the Tulsa Music Scene. Dustin and Mac have done an incredible job with Oklahoma Music Academy and every one of those musicians had a great time playing music together. And for me that is what it is all about.

I would like to say thank you to the following people/vendors who helped The Drum Shop make these musicians feel like Rock Stars! Thank you to photographers Bryan Turnham and Jennifer Baggett Reid along with Charles E. Surine, Gavin Hatcher, Matt and Ella Malone. I can’t thank you enough for your help in one form or fashion. A big thank you to Evans Drumheads, Gibraltar Hardware, Meinl Cymbals, Oklahoma Ink, Promark Drumsticks, Quality Signs & Banners, Inc. and Gakki Sakae Drums. A special thank you goes out to Mac Ross and Dustin Rhodes for letting The Drum Shop be a part of this fantastic event. We look forward to next year with great anticipation.

I can't front, I kinda miss this Wendy. Anyway, no matter what people say, she always ended up being right, in the end. Even Lenard (Charlamange) said the stuff she said back then ended up being true. Anyway, back when I was young and naive, I legit through Lil' Kim was a h0e. The ghetto rumor back in 1997 was that she couldn't go to Summer Jam because she had to get her stomach pumped due to swallowing 10 gallons of cum. lol. Our silly behinds believed it too. I'm REALLY starting to believe some of this Illuminati stuff. Several artists (credible artists) have all said pretty much the same things. Now, all this gay rapper stuff was brand new to me until I came on Youtube. I remember watching a DMX video and one of the recommended videos was top 10 gay rappers. Again, no idea until I came on Youtube. The first 2 people are always DMX and Puffy. I was like no, they don't "look" gay. Still kinda naive back then, but boy oh' boy did I learn. I thought gay was Boy George and feminine. I never saw men that appeared to be straight actually be gay, much less bi. Jay-Z though? Really? There I go being naive again. Anything's possible. I can't see LL like that either. I could see (figuratively) Busta Rhymes, KRS-One and a few others like that. Oooh, let put this "sweet tea" down. Dang, y'all spilled hella tea in this interview, Auntie. See, this is why I love Ice Cube. His name's never mentioned in any of this kinda stuff. He keeps his behind on the West Coast and minds his business. Traditionally heterosexual men are gon be a thing of the past pretty soon. Same goes for women 'cause chile.....

Que 9 - FaceTime:

At the precipice of becoming an adult, most kids are just entering their formative years that will shape them. Que 9, on the other hand, is a 13 year emcee from Detroit who has not only hit his stride, but is already light years ahead of artists twice his age in terms of stature, accomplishment, and talent. His new single for “FaceTime” is chock full of all of the hallmarks that have put Que 9 on the map; flawless looks and killer hooks.

Hot off of the momentum of the lead single “Splash,” Que 9 dropped his new EP Epidemic (B.M.B. Records), produced by Florida beat makers “The Crew” (Jace and Brisk). The ambitious collection is the product of a marathon recording session, knocking out 7 songs in 3 days. The process is indicative of not just his deep well of talent, but also his exceptional work ethic. B.M.B. Records CEO Brian Maurice Brown beams with pride when it comes to Que 9. He states, “I’m amazed by his rapid growth, humility and the evolution of his content and work ethic”.

He’s not just a studio persona, either, he also hits the road hard to bring his music to fans firsthand. While the rising rap star has blessed countless stages across the country with his electric showmanship and rambunctious delivery, his first big show was 2015 Summer Jam in his hometown. From there he joined the I Wanna See You Dance Tour line up where he held his own among other popular teen rappers Lil George and Silento, I Heart Memphis, We R Toons and D Low on a few city stops. He has been profiled on prominent local TV news programs and featured in national press outlets including Complex, thisis50.com, allhiphop.com, XXL and most recently spotlighted in the Michigan Chronicle and Detroit’s Metro Times.

RECENT REVIEWS
Stewart Francke – Skope online Review • April 2016

Stewart Francke’s latest effort is played with a tremendous amount of heart and soul. These songs feel timeless in nature. Like a collection of long-lost classics, there is something so intimate, so familiar throughout the album. His voice serves to center the album, showing off his wide range, from the celebratory to the sweet...with everywhere in between. By opting for such a sound he is able to show off his considerable vocal chops and ear for melody. Throughout the album, the songs simply stun--whether he is going for the mellow opener “Summer Solider (Holler If Ya Hear Me)” to the rockin' yet introspective “House Of Lights”.

Deserving to be played as loud as possible is the passionate rush of “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”. By far the highlight of the album is the infinite smoothness of “Sam Cooke’s on The Radio” which feels like a forgotten late 70s Steely Dan track. Irresistible in nature, the song’s gliding groove and fanfare work wonders. Akin to Jon Brion’s fondness for forthright classic rock is the earnestness of “Two Guitars Bass and Drums”. Stewart Francke’s lyricism evokes the best of summer jam, sunny in nature. Smart and tender is the narrative of “Letter From Ten Green”. Closing the album off on a fiery infectious note is the ambitious spraying work of “Upon Seeing Simone (Live)”. The song’s passion grows ever larger until the fantastic finale.

Infinitely stylish with immaculate arrangements. Stewart Francke’s self-titled album is pop perfection.

Chuck's mother told him "Someday you will be a man,
And you will be the leader of a big old band.
Many people coming from miles around
To hear you play your music when the sun go down
Maybe someday your name will be in lights
Saying Johnny B. Goode tonight."

God bless mothers.

Johnny B Goode is based on Chuck Berry's life. It tells the tale of a boy with humble beginnings with a talent for guitar. Some details were changed: Berry was from St. Louis, not Louisiana, and he knew how to read and write very well. He graduated from beauty school with a degree in hairdressing and cosmetology.

The line, "That little country boy could play" was originally, "That little colored boy can play." Berry knew he had to change it if he wanted the song played on the radio.

Berry got the name "Johnny" from Johnnie Johnson, a piano player who collaborated with Berry on many songs, including "Maybellene," "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Sweet Little 16." Johnson often wrote the songs on piano, and then Berry converted them to guitar and wrote lyrics. Berry joined Johnson's group, The Sir John Trio, in 1953, and quickly became the lead singer and centerpiece of the band.

Johnson was very well-respected among many musicians. He played with Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker and many others before his death at age 80 in 2005.

Berry lifted some guitar licks for this song: the intro came from the Louis Jordan song "Ain't That Just Like A Woman," and the guitar break came from a 1950 T-Bone Walker song called "Strollin' With Bones." Jordan was a very influential R&B singer and a huge influence on Berry; Walker was a famous guitarist in the '40s and early '50s who came up with an electric guitar sound and raucous stage act that Berry incorporated.

Berry got the word "Goode" from the street in St. Louis where he grew up. He lived at 2520 Goode Avenue, which in 1986 was renamed Annie Malone Drive after the woman who financed a children's home on the street.

In 2000, Johnnie Johnson sued Berry, claiming that he never got credit for helping write many of Berry's hits, including this. The case was dismissed in 2002, with the judge ruling that too much time passed between the writing of the songs and the lawsuit.

This song is a great example of the care and precision Berry used when writing and delivering his lyrics. He wanted the words to his songs to tell a story and stand on their own, and took care to clearly enunciate so listeners could understand them. Many of the Country and Blues singers who preceded Berry weren't so clear with the words.
In 1981, Keith Richards went backstage at a Chuck Berry show in New York. Not knowing who he was and thinking he was an annoying fan, Berry punched him, which wasn't out of character for the sometimes-prickly Berry. Richards later said: "I love his work, but I couldn't warm to him even if I was cremated next to him."

Berry recorded a sequel to this song called "Bye Bye Johnny," which tells the story of Johnny as a grown man.

Johnny Winter played this at the Woodstock festival in 1969.

At the Summer Jam in Watkins Glen, New York in 1973, The Band, The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead played this song as an encore. It was the largest rock concert ever, with about 600,000 people attending.

This was featured in the 1985 movie Back To The Future. Michael J. Fox' character goes back in time and plays it to a stunned crowd as Marvin Berry looks on. Marvin rings his cousin, Chuck, saying that he thinks he has found the new style he is looking for, then points the telephone so that it catches most of the music coming from Marty McFly. This scene produced a classic line when McFly comes on stage and tells the band, "It's a blues riff in B, watch me for the changes, and try to keep up."

A musician named Mark Campbell sang Fox's vocals, but was credited as "Marty McFly."
This has been covered by Peter Tosh, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beatles.

The Sex Pistols covered this in a medley with "Roadrunner."

In 1977, NASA sent a copy of this on the Voyager space probe as part of a package that was meant to represent the best in American culture. Someday, aliens could find it and discover Chuck Berry.
