Preview of the James Wade v Wes Newton match this evening

Both players have gone about their business quietly but efficiently in the tournament so far, and for one, a place in the penultimate stage of darts' most prestigious event awaits.

The match signals a re-run of the 2011 UK Open final, which saw Wade take glory 11-8 to secure his most recent televised major title, and their latest battle promises to be as equally an entertaining encounter to kick off the night's action.

Wade's personal problems off the oche have undoubtedly impacted on his form, with a roller-coaster year seeing him reach the World Matchplay final, but bow out of numerous majors in the early rounds.

The left-hander, however, now appears in a stable mind-set and has his eyes firmly set on a maiden world title, with the Sid Waddell trophy the only thing absent from his collection.

The Machine has seen off Peter Hudson, Steve Beaton and Vincent van der Voort in relatively comfortable fashion to reach this stage and appears content to allow the attention to be averted from him in terms of the title contenders, but possesses the clinical all-round game capable of carrying him to glory this week.

Newton has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the PDC over the past 18 months, surging as high as fifth in the order of merit and appearing in two major finals, but is yet to taste glory in a major final.

The Warrior is renowned as one of the most consistently dangerous players on both floor and stage and is appearing in the Quarter-Finals here for only the second time as he aims to better his best ever run at Ally Pally.

The Fleetwood ace has dispatched Johnny Haines, Scott Rand and Mark Walsh, dropping only one set along the way, but knows he will need to raise his game as he joins the world's elite at the business end of the biggest tournament of all.

The duo have met a total of 15 times in previous major competition since 2004, and perhaps surprisingly, it's Newton who holds the marginally superior record, having taken victory on eight of those occasions.

December Sports Preview:

The month of December may not be the most action packed in the sporting calendar, but it does provide us with some of the most historic, iconic and anticipated events from the entire year.
While many sportsmen and women choose to rest up over the winter, it is the busiest period in a footballer’s season. With the Premier League fixtures right throughout the month, including the traditional full set of Boxing Day matches, December really is a present for football lovers and those who like to bet on the sport. William Hill will not be resting either, as our busy little elves prepare over 180 pre-match and over 100 In-Play markets for every single Premier League tie. That’s not to mention the betting for European Major leagues, English lower leagues and World leagues nestling ready under our tree.
Fans of Chelsea FC can escape the cold weather for a few days at least as their team participates in the annual World Club Championship held in Tokyo, Japan.  Chelsea will be present as representatives of the Champions League. As the current holders they will square-off against the likes of Corinthians,  Al-Ahly and Auckland City.
Horse racing really comes alive in December where fans of the sport flock to Kempton on Boxing Day for the prestigious William Hill King George VI Chase.  Made famous by the imperious yet now retired Kauto Star, winner of five of the last six renewals of this race, this year’s spectacle looks set to be one of the most exciting ever. Al Ferof raced his way into contention after an impressive win at Cheltenham recently, does he have enough to beat Long Run, Riverside Theatre and Cue Card?
Other equally noteworthy races contested in December are the Tingle Creek Chase on the eighth from Sandown, the International Hurdle at Cheltenham on the fifteenth and on the twenty-seventh is the Welsh National from Chepstow.
Following on from his success at the williamhill.com Grand Slam Of Darts, Raymond van Barneveld will feel confident that he can go deep at the 2012 PDC World Darts Championship.
Five-time World Champion Van Barneveld will meet St Helens youngster Michael Smith in the first round at London’s Alexandra Palace.
Rival and favourite for the tournament Phil Taylor also arrives with a winning mentality after prevailing in last week’s Players’ Championship and the Power will face Northern Ireland’s Michael Mansell in the opening round.
The draw for the £1 million event was made on Tuesday alongside the unveiling of the specially-commissioned new World Championship trophy, named in memory of the late Sky Sports commentator Sid Waddell.

Sid Waddell, one of the commentators who's a bigger star than any of the champions in the sport in he commentates on. His most famous line was when Eric Bristow won the World Darts Championship:
"When Alexander of Macedonia was 33, he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer... Bristow's only 27."
there's others like
'Wade is like a man trying to eat candy floss in a Hadron Collider.'
or
'Barmaids are frozen like Greek statues. There's no beer being served. Everybody's eyes are hooked on that board."
and
'As Freud and Jung would no doubt agree, you can over-psych for a darts match.'
He did pool as well.
As the Borgias knew full well, fine cuts can hurt. That’s like laying a trap in the path of a blind rabbit. If I could shoot pool like that I wouldn’t be sitting here mauling the English language.

He's definitely one of the people who's passing will leave a hole, because his successors will only remind viewers that they're not Sid Waddell.
