The untold comparison: Tom Brady vs. Drew Brees
By: Shane Longino

Who is better?
That was the question brought to my screen just less than 48 hours ago, which made me think about the two careers. And the more I thought, the similarities between the two were down right glaring. The more I thought, the more it was true. So how can these two guys, one being described as a “city saving Saint” and the other as a “Pretty boy cheater” be so alike?

Two Big 10 quarterback’s, two NFL backups with chips on their shoulders throughout their careers, two super bowl champions covered in controversy, two future first-ballot hall of famers.

When you look at an NFL record book nowadays, two commons you’ll see throughout the quarterback position are simple; Drew Brees and Tom Brady. Their Cinderella like runs to the top of the mountain are well documented and careers can only be described as legendary, but why do the parallels stop there? Why don’t more people look at the two more often to compare their greatness?

It’s easy to look at Brady v Manning as the prime rivalry and this generation’s greatest two quarterbacks almost leaving everyone debating who’s better and who would you take if you were starting a team, but the comparisons should stop there. Manning was a decorated recruit, Heisman finalist in college and the number 1 overall pick in 1998. We’ll get into Brady’s story, but if there are ever two greats to put together, here they are. The paths, the stats, the supporting casts, the legacy’s, you name it.

High School

The two-sport athlete, Brady grew up just off the San Francisco bay attending Serra high School where he thrived in baseball and football. Brady was a catcher for the school’s baseball team and was the quarterback in the fall. However, going into his senior year, the attention for the young quarterback wasn’t as promising as he would have liked. He made a recruiting tape and sent it to schools all around the country, including USC and Michigan. By the time his high school playing days were over, Brady was a zero-star recruit much like Brees, but had two of the top schools in the country’s recruiters vying for his talents. But when the USC staff came back to then head coach, John Robinson with the tape, the coach said two words that linger with him to this day, “not interested”. Brady would then go on to Ann Arbor and become a Wolverine.

Brees had a same song, but different chorus. Drew Brees was 1st team All-state quarterback in high school, but not just in any state, in Texas, the land of football. Brees started 29 games for the Austin, Texas based school, Westlake High and won 29 games. You do the math on that one. Coming off such a stellar career, you would think the state’s offensive player of the year would have every major college knocking on his door, right? Wrong. Brees suffered a knee injury his junior year and his “short” stature, which wrote him off many division 1 schools recruiting trips going into his senior year. The number one quarterback in the state of Texas was a zero-star recruit… ZERO. By the time Brees had a decision to make to which school he would attend college, only two schools offered him a scholarship, Kentucky and Purdue in which he decided to head to the Big 10.
College

When Brady arrived on the campus of Michigan, he was 7th on the depth chart. The California native would spend his first two years behind quarterback Brian Griese and watch his team take a share of the 1997 national championship. Going into the 1998 season, Brady managed to climb the depth chart and share starting time with another two-sport athlete, Drew Henson. The two would split starts in the 98’ and 99’ seasons, but Brady would finish with the starting job, posting impressive performances vs Ohio St. and in the Orange bowl with an overtime victory vs Alabama in what would be his last college game. Brady would finish 20-5 as a starter and appeared in 31 games with Michigan as he had his sights set on the NFL.

Brees would redshirt his freshman year, but would immediately be given the opportunity to start his sophomore year in 1999. He would prove the coaching staff right to hand him the keys to the offense leading the Boilermakers to a much improved season finishing 7-5 and was a nominee for the Davey O’Brien trophy as the Nation’s most outstanding quarterback. Brees would build off the success from 1999 and lead his team to a Big 10 championship in 2000, due to upsets over Northwestern and a Drew Henson led Michigan team. Brees took a woeful football team and in two years, they were playing for their first Rose bowl since 1967. They would come up short, but Brees would win the Maxwell award as the nation’s most outstanding player. Brees finished his college career with the most passing yards with Big 10 records in passing yards (11,792), touchdown passes (90), total offensive yards (12,693), completions (1,026), and attempts (1,678).

Draft day

What more can be written about the draft day story of Tom Brady? 2000 draft, 6h round, pick 199, six quarterbacks taken in front of him, including a now farmer, Giovanni Carmazzi taken by Brady’s hometown San Francisco 49ers. But how could have this happened? Scouts were concerned about Brady not able to lock down the starting job at Michigan and his skinny frame at the combine had teams taking the Wolverine graduate off their board, pushing the likes of Tee Martin, Chris Redman, and Spergon Wynn up on boards. The once projected 2-3 round pick found himself drawn at a television set hearing name after name, round after round go by with himself still on the board. Finally getting a phone call from Bill Belichick, Brady was selected alongside a chip on his shoulder that will follow him for the rest of his career.

Brees didn’t have as long of a wait, but a surprising wait nonetheless. Projected to go in the first round and to be the 2nd quarterback taken in the 2001 Draft (only behind Virginia Tech’s Michael Vick), Brees was expecting his name called alongside players like LaDainian Tomlinson, Michael Vick and other top prospects. After all, Brees broke every record there was to have for a quarterback in the Big 10, it only seemed destined for him to be standing next to the commissioner with a jersey in hand getting his picture taken. But old problems arose in the pre-draft process that Brees was too familiar with already. Trainers telling teams and coaches questioning if Brees’ health and frame would be able to last at the position in the NFL. It’s not everyday you see a 6 foot, 200lbs quarterback leading a team, but the two-year captain of Purdue took that criticism and bottled it up to motivate himself when he was taken with the first pick of the second round, 32nd overall by the San Diego Chargers to pair him alongside 5th overall pick, LaDainian Tomlinson. Brees would be starting for the worst football team in the NFL.

2001-2005

If you only looked at these years as the duos careers, the similarities would have stopped in the Big 10. Brady was coming off of his first year with the Patriots backing up former number 1 overall pick Drew Bledsoe and Brees was starting his rookie year backing up Doug Flutie. But injuries plaguing another undersized quarterback with Flutie, and a whole lot of Mo Lewis destroying the organs of Drew Bledsoe, these two quarterback would take the reins of their respective franchises and go in very separate directions. Brady would make his first career start on September 30th, 2001 beating a Peyton Manning led Colts team 44-13, and along with one of the league’s top defense would never look back going all the way to the super bowl upsetting the greatest show on turf St. Louis Rams in the 2001 super bowl. The city of Boston was known for having the curse of the bambino, the Larry Bird Celtics years were nothing more than a pipedream of old, but Brady lifted the city in a tragic time just months after the 9/11 attacks in New York. Brees would have the complete opposite start to his career. Brees would only start one game for the chargers in 2001, vs Kansas City Chiefs in a 25-20 loss.
Brees and Brady would both be going into the 2002 season as the opening day starters for their respective franchises, but both with different levels of expectations. Brady coming off a dream like season and a super bowl MVP performance and Drew Bledsoe shipped to Buffalo in the offseason, the ceiling for his Patriots seemed endless. Brees on the other hand was taking over a 5-11 Chargers team with what was seen as a rebuilding process for the young team. The defending champion Patriots started off 3-0 before facing off against a Brees led Chargers team and suffered their first loss since November 18, 2001, leading to a 4 game losing streak the patriots couldn’t dig themselves out of. Brees would lead his team to an impressive 8-4 record going into the final month of the season, but would drop their last 4 games of the season and missing the playoffs alongside Brady. With question marks going into the season with Brady’s status in New England and Brees after losing his last 4 starts of the year, the margin of greatness would continue to stretch the following years.
The Patriots would have one of the greatest two year runs in NFL history, winning back to back Super bowls in the 2003-2004 seasons going an incredible 26-6 in the regular season combined Brady has silicified his starting job in New England. Meanwhile across the country, Brees’ struggles would carry over into the 2003 season going 4-12 earning the number 1 pick in the 2004 draft. After Eli Manning refused to play in San Diego, he was dealt to New York in exchange for the services of Philip Rivers. With all the shifting with quarterbacks, Brees’ days seemed numbered not only with the Chargers, but in the NFL as a starter. He would respond to the Chargers move to select a quarterback by leading the Chargers to a 12-4 record and their first playoff appearance since 1995. Brees and company would lose in the opening round vs the Jets in overtime, but left head coach Marty Schottenheimer an important decision to make going into 2005
The Patriots loss some key pieces to their team in 2005 and took a step back finishing 10-6 but still good enough to chinch another division title and playoff berth. Brady took on more of a load with offensive “talent” around such as Chad Jackson and Reche Caldwell and would still put up a pro bowl season. Brees went into the season still the quarterback of the Chargers playing in the final year of his rookie contract. The team was 9-6 going into the final game of the season playing for the final wild card spot vs the Denver Broncos. Brees fumbled inside his own 5 and was hit by John Lynch when reaching for the ball suffering a torn labrum in his shoulder, knocking him out of the game and what would be his last play with the Chargers. After winning their opening wild card game, Brady felt the pressure of carrying a wretched offense into the divisional round vs the Denver Broncos. Behind 27-13, Brady had one last push down the field, but his season was ultimately ended when he was intercepted by… John Lynch, ending the Patriots season. Although their seasons ended with the same player, their careers would ultimately take different turns.

2006-2008

The 2006 offseason was one of a complete shift in what seemed as a last ditch effort on the career of Drew Brees. After the Chargers offered Brees a 5 year, 50-million-dollar contract, Brees took a chance on himself and his shoulder and turned down the deal, thinking he was worth more on the open market. Brees had two viable options, the Patriot rivaled Miami Dolphins organization, or a down New Orleans Saints team still feeling the effects of not only a turnover in the organization hiring new head coach Sean Payton, but recovering from the effects on their city caused by hurricane Katrina. Brees seemed to be leaning towards heading to the Dolphins, however team doctors question if Brees could ever fully recover from his shoulder injury and advised the team to not sign the free agent. The team would go on to trade for Donte Culpepper instead, who would never fully recover from his previous injuries, cutting him 8 games into his Dolphins career. Could you imagine the meetings Brady and Brees would of have inside the same division? Brees would go on to visit the Saints in the first week of March and was picked up in a car by Coach Peyton. The drive around the city he took, seeing the destruction, seeing the businesses and home seemingly gone with every mile passing by, Brees realized this is the place he needed to be. He signed a 6-year, $60 million deal with the Saints that week.

The 2006 season was another success for New England going 12-4 winning another division championship and their 5th in 6 years. The Saints would have one of the most miraculous seasons in NFL history. Opening back up their Superdome on a week 3 Monday Night Football game vs the Atlanta Falcons. Steve Gleason would be the hero that day for not only the Saints, but an entire city as he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown on the Falcons opening drive, jumpstarting their 10-6 division championship. Brady and Brees would both lead their teams to their conference championship games in 2006, both having to go on the road to play for a shot to meet each other in the super bowl. But the meeting would never happen. The Patriots blew an 18-point lead to the Colts and would lose 34-31, while in Chicago, Brees and the Saints would never hold a lead vs the Chicago Bears, losing 39-14.

During the 2007, NFL draft, the Patriots would make one of the best trades in draft history, trading a 4th round pick to Oakland for Randy Moss. In the 2007 season, the two would break every offensive passing and receiving record as far as the eye could see. Moss broke Jerry Rice’s single season touchdown mark catching 23 touchdowns as apart of Brady’s single season 50 touchdown performance. The Patriots would finish a perfect 16-0 for the first time in NFL history. Riding high off a Cinderella like season, using the success to rebuild the city of New Orleans, the 2007 season for the Saints was a disappointment. The club started off 0-4 and would play out of a hole from there. Brees would go on to have a good season, his team around him couldn’t get consistent play for the quarterback. The Patriots story runs all the way to the super bowl, trying to complete a dream season vs the Giants. Their unorthodox “Nascar” pass-rush (4 defensive ends rushing on passing downs) would pressure Brady in super bowl 42. Even with all the hits Brady took, he still managed to get his team ahead 14-10, until David Tyree came along, crushing the Patriots perfect season. Heartbroken and unfulfilled, Brady couldn’t wait for the 2008 season. Except he could of.
In the opening game, Brady was hit in the leg by Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard and tore his ACL. He would be out for the rest of the season watching Matt Cassel take over and lead the Patriots short of the postseason and watch Drew Brees attempt to break a passing record of his own. While Brees was unable to get the Saints back in the playoffs in 2008, he was able to get within 16 yards of breaking Dan Marino’s single season passing-yards record. Why this could have been seen as a lost season for the two. They only used this to prove who the best in the league were.

2009: The return and the Triumph

Tom Brady would return from his ACL injury and silence all doubters on MNF week 1 leading the Patriots to a comeback win vs the Bills. However, after a MNF game vs the Dolphins, Brady and Moss would could come to bad terms in their relationship, leading to Moss being cut from the team during the season. Brady would continue his comeback player of the year campaign leading the Patriots back to the playoffs in 2009. The Patriots would lose to the Ravens in the Wild card round, but Brady could have made a case for his 2nd MVP trophy if it wasn’t for what Peyton Manning was doing in Indy and what Drew Brees and the Saints were doing in New Orleans. The Saints were nearly unstoppable in 2009, starting the season 13-0, including a 38-17 beat down on MNF vs the Patriots. Everything was clicking offensively and the defense was much improved from previous years. The Saints would ride this momentum all the way to Miami where the Saints played the Colts in the Super Bowl and defeat the Colts 27-17. Drew Brees was a super bowl champion. The city of New Orleans was a super bowl champion.

2010-2011

After the super bowl, the Saints would finish 11-5 and would lose to the 7-9 Seahawks in what is considered the biggest upset in postseason history, along with super bowl 42. The Patriots would be upset as well, losing to the Rex Ryan led New York Jets in the Divisional round after going 14-2 in the regular season. In 2011, the Saints and Patriots would finish with identical 13-3 records and seemed primed to meet each other in super bowl 46. Brees would go on to break Dan Marino’s passing yard record he chased in 2008 by 400 yards in 2011. He seemed destined to go on another super bowl run, but a rowdy Jim Harbaugh led 49ers team had other plans. A 36-32 win on a late touchdown catch by Vernon Davis sent the Saints packing once more in the postseason. The Patriots plans were not altered. They advanced to the super bowl to have a rematch 5 years in the making. The New York Giants waiting for the Patriots at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Patriots would suffer yet another heartbreaking loss from drops and spectacular catches by the Giants. A 21-17 victory left Brady with now a 3-2 record in the super bowl.

Controversies

In 2012, reports came out of defensive coordinator giving bonus checks to players who would hurt opposing players purposely. The main focus being in the 2009 NFC championship game vs the Minnesota Vikings and QB, Brett Favre. This would suspend defensive coordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely, suspend defensive captains, Will Smith, Jonathan Vilma and Scott Fujita for lengths of the season, and head coach Sean Peyton for the entire NFL season. The whole investigation was admittedly handled poorly by commissioner Roger Goodell and was taken to court led by former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue. The player’s suspensions were omitted effected immediately, but the coaches’ suspensions stood. This would prove to be a crucial distraction for the Saints missing the 2012 postseason.
The Patriots are nothing new to controversy. Between spygate in 2007 and now the disgustingly overblown (no pun intended) deflategate scandal. Bill Belichick has never faced suspensions from these two situations, but the Patriots have given up two first round picks and millions of dollars in fines from taping opposing team’s practices and from the air… the air in a football. Brady is currently suspended the first four games of the 2016 regular season, but with our luck as NFL fans, it’ll be stretched out in court all the way to Brady’s hall of fame speech.

2013-2015

After Sean Peyton returned in 2013, the Saints picked up where they left off in 2011, as the season felt like a revenge tour across the league to say the league was wrong. Brees put up monster numbers with his new favorite target, Tight End, Jimmy Graham. Meanwhile, the Patriots had their own star Tight End rising up, Aaron Herna… wait no strike that… Rob Gronkowski. The Saints earned a playoff berth and went to the divisional round where they met eventual super bowl champions, Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots would meet another super bowl team in the playoffs, coming in the form of a Peyton Manning led Denver Broncos team. The 2014 season would lead to some separation in the success between our two quarterbacks. The Saints took a step back defensively after ranking in the top 5 in 2013. They finished 7-9, and missed the postseason. The Patriots had other ideas for the year. Brady and company would have another division title, but would face a rugged Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional round. The Patriots would comeback down 14 early and beat the Ravens 34-31. In the AFC Championship, a young Colts team fresh off their upset victory vs the Broncos, would be a victim of wrong place, wrong time. The Patriots won 45-7 in what would be known as the deflategate game. They were set to matchup vs the defending champion Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks brought a 10-point lead into the 4th quarter, but Tom Brady scored 14 unanswered in the 4th leaving Russell Wilson to just HAND THE FOOTBALL TO MARSHAWN ARE YOU KIDDING ME WHAT A STUPID… (deep breath) the Patriots went on to win 28-24 and Brady secured his 4th super bowl ring.

The 2015 season was one to forget for the Saints, sporting the worst defense in the NFL, and Drew Brees playing with an injured throwing shoulder for most of the season. The Saints once again finished 7-9 and missing the postseason. The defending champion Patriots started off 10-0 and finishing 12-4, earning the 2nd seed. Brady would face a familiar foe one last time for the right to go to the super bowl. The Manning led Broncos went into the game sacking and hitting Brady forcing mistakes by the veteran, but Brady still managed to lead a comeback late, only to throw an interception on the game tying two-point conversion attempt, sending him home, staring at a looming 4 game suspension.

Stats

Pro football focus compared the two by their stats, as shown above, eliminating team success from the equation and the two are neck in neck in every major quarterback statistic. Brees has a slight edge in just about every category, including his years spent in San Diego.

Legacy
When it comes down to it, you really can’t go wrong with either one of these players. The similarities highlighted in here are endless. Overcoming an injury and proving others wrong the next year, being undervalued coming out of high school and college, draft day surprises, overcoming the “game-manager” monochord early in their careers, carrying chips on their shoulders, overcoming team controversies, leading their teams to championships and continuing to prove critics wrong to this day playing in their late 30s, still trying to lead their clubs to the playoffs. Then why will their legacies be perceived so differently when the curtain sets? These two have seemingly been there together step by step in their illustrious careers, but have been separated throughout MVP and pro bowl-like performances. How close we came to this being a divisional rivalry, or a super bowl matchup, but we were robbed as fans to a Brady v Brees matchups and we are only left to question how close their greatness is to debate… who is better?
