Sally Ride: How Her Historic Space Mission Opened Doors for Women in Science - National Air and Space Museum Event
Watch the program live on NASA TV: www.nasa.gov/ntv. As a child, Sally Ride did not dream of going into space. She was completing her PhD in physics when the idea dawned. Along with five other women scientists, she was selected by NASA to become a mission specialist in 1978. On June 18, 1983, ...

This article has been getting a lot of traction in the last couple of days, but it's misleading.

1) Sally Ride didn't come out. She was outed. She chose to avoid labeling herself.

2) If we're going to label her (and we're a world that loves labels, so it's going to happen), lets try to get it right. Yes, it's possible Sally Ride was lesbian. She had a female partner for the last 27 years. However, given that she was married to a man for five years before that, it's more likely that Sally Ride was bisexual.

A lot of people may wonder why the distinction is important (it is important). Bisexuality is even more marginalized in our culture than is homosexuality. In both hetero- and homosexual communities, people who identify as bisexual are treated as "others." They're called fence-sitters and told they're just going through a phase. When there are strong bisexual role-models, it's important that they are recognized; this can help make bisexual erasure a thing of the past.

That said, regardless of Sally Ride's sexuality, she was an inspiring woman. RIP, Sally Ride.
