Aviva  Premiership 2014-15 Preview:

The kits have been announced, the tournament launched and finally the Premiership season kicks off this coming weekend. It's been a long wait for fans as they've seen exciting transfers and heard hopeful whispers over summer. But, finally, we are here and it's going to be a cracker!

Saracens lost out in a nail-biting extra-time extravaganza to Northampton Saints in the 2013-14 final and will surely be looking for revenge this time around. They've signed Scotland's Jim Hamilton from Montpellier and Kieran Longbottom from Western Force, which can certainly only help in their search for glory.

The champions, Saints, haven't been busy with transfers but who can blame them. The confidence of walking away with the trophy should only bolster their squad. The Saints will be eyeing up those top places again this season and it'll take something extraordinary to stop them slotting into the top four. However, one of the joys of the Premiership is that extraordinary things often do happen, so they can't afford to relax.

Meanwhile Leicester, who ended up third in the table, have added to their already star-packed squad, most notably adding All Black legend Brad Thorn to their ranks. They've also scooped up Freddie Burns and Leonardo Ghiraldini.

Harlequins narrowly beat Bath to the play-offs last time around but they're going to need a far better start if they're going to get there again this year. Bath are determined to put the past behind them and reach those top four places, having signed Sam Burgess among others to aid them. Quins, on the other hand, have used their strong academy to their advantage, pulling up several young guns from their selection to develop further.

Sale Sharks are hoping to prove they can have two solid seasons in a row, while Wasps, London Irish and Newcastle Falcons all have to step up and show what they've got. Newcastle stayed up from last season and so have been on a little spending spree. They have grabbed Kane Thompson from Chiefs and Joshua Furno from Biarritz as well as brothers Alesana and Anitelea Tuilagi.

Back as newcomers for 2014-15 are London Welsh, who previously have spent a season in the Premiership only to find themselves relegated. However, this time is different, they've been throwing some money about and have snapped up a bunch of exciting players. Piri Weepu heads up this fine list of additions and we are expecting some brilliant matches from London Welsh.

So that's it, all the talking, writing and speculating is coming to an end. All that is left is for the teams to show us what they've got, so go on,we dare you.

Quins’ Easter takes on a double identity

Quins’ Easter takes on a double identity Nick Easter is going to be working on two rugby fronts this season, but he insists his main priority is Aviva Premiership glory with Harlequins. The 35-year-old number eight was announced as the new head coach of Wimbledon last month suggesting his time at the Stoop was approaching its end. However, after setting a record number of professional Quins appearances (233) last year, as well as being named Gatorade game changer of the season and Green Flag forward of the season, the former England international is far from hanging up his boots. And he insists the Dons know all too well where his weekend attentions lay. “I will coach the Wimbledon lads on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but come Saturdays they understand that my first job is playing for Quins,” he said.  “I may be there on the odd Saturday if Quins have a Friday night game, but here have been no promises made. ”In light of that I have brought in Tim Payne [former Wasps prop forward], he will come down during the weeks, to make sure we’re singing from the same hymn sheet, and then he’ll be there on Saturday.” Despite his [...]

Quins have reasons to be cheerful at World Club Sevens

Quins have reasons to be cheerful at World Club Sevens Jack Maslen believes his young Harlequins colleagues can be proud of their performance at 2014 World Club Sevens over the weekend in Twickenham despite losing in the final of the Shield competition. Quins were demoted to the third minor competition after losing all of their three group stage matches on Saturday to DHL Western Province, RC Enisei and New York City, respectively. Captain for Saturday Sam Stuart, 22, expressed his disappointment at his side’s early exit at the main competition: “Results have been disappointing but I’m sure the lads will learn from this,” he said. However the Twickenham-based side had a better run in Sunday’s Shield competition. They overcame Australia’s Super Rugby champions NSW Waratahs 26-19 before losing to Seattle 28-14 in the final. And despite a brace of tries from Gavin Dampies, late points from Milse Craigwell and Michael Palefou sealed the match for the Americans. “It’s a good learning curve for the young boys,” said Maslen, who was a guest player from National League 2 South outfit Worthing RFC. “There’s a lot who are from the Quins academy and it’s a great experience being at Twickenham. “For the [...]

Quins Brown is feeling his age in the face of the Premiership Sevens youth

Quins Brown is feeling his age in the face of the Premiership Sevens youth When it comes to the Premiership Sevens, Harlequins full back Mike Brown is starting to feel his age. Quins, Northampton Saints, London Irish, Newcastle Falcons, Leicester Tigers, Cardiff Blues, Newport Gwent Dragons and defending champions Gloucester Rugby will descend on the Stoop tonight [Friday] to contest the first piece of silverware on offer this season. With all the finalists boasting young academy players, 28-year-old Brown, having watched the group stages, may be feeling old, but admitted he was impressed by the next generation of rugby stars coming through. He said: “Watching the guys that are coming through in the sevens side is making me feel quite old. “There are a lot of young players on show, but it’s great for them to show what they can do on the TV and it’s great exposure for them.” Quins earned their place in the finals night with wins over Northampton Saints (40-7), Saracens (36-0) and Wasps (26-19). In spite of the successes, Quins have made four changes to the squad for tonight’s finals. Louis Grimoldby, Charlie Walker, Sam Stuart and Kieran Treadwell have joined up with the senior [...]
