When looking at personality rather because we are looking to put the best person in a particular job position or if we are building a team that will be able to work together under stressful situations I find it helpful to understand the underlying factors of personality.

BIG 5

Known in most circles as the big 5. Also, known in some academic circles as the Five Factor Model (FFM) so named because it relates all personalities in a matter of five key traits. This is not to say that just like setting up a D&D character we can reduce our employees to how they score in five categories. Rather it is a rather efficient way of quantifying a very complex subject, namely human personality. There are several easy to use online test to see where you or any of your employees fall in the big 5 rating system. To see how you score follow the link at the bottom of the page.

Now that we have brought them up what are the big 5? They are; openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism ("Positive Psychology Program ", 2016). You may even see the acronym OCEAN used to remember these traits. Let’s break that down one at a time, and examine how this may relate to personal management.

OPENESS TO EXPERANCE, this is a measure of how much a person will tend to seek new experiences and move toward a variety in their activities as opposed to a regimented routine. Look for employees that score high in this category to be artistic and imaginative. While those who score low in this category will thrive in highly structured environments.

CONSCIENTIOUSNESS, this one deals with the ability to organize (be organized) and be dependable. Who does not want that in their employees? A very high score can mean that the person is obstinate dogmatic and hard to deal with. While a low score can indicate flexibility along with sloppiness. Look to put employees with high scores in the planning cell where they can excel by breaking down tasks and generating goal orientated lists.

EXTRAVERSION, this is where people normally refer to a person as being either an extrovert or an introvert. We can think of people that score high on this trait as being very people orientated, seeking the company of others, and looking to be the center of attention. While employees who score low on this trait will be more content working independently.

AGREEABLENESS, this trait is a measure of how well an employee goes along with the group. A high score can indicate cooperation and sacrifice for the common goal. This is excellent for large scale detailed projects like our current excavation of a Giganotosaurus skeleton. Low scores on the other hand can competitiveness and the type of teammate that will tell a supervisor they are wrong when they need it.

NEUROTICISM, contrary to popular belief this is not a measure of how craze a person is. A high score will indicate that the employee is highly emotional and tend to feel that events affect them more personally than others do. While a low score will indicate that the employee has more trust in their abilities and is generally more resilient in adverse situations (Naggiar 2017).

Assessment

How does this relate to hiring and putting the correct employees in the best place for both them and the university? In the past we, and many if not most other institutions have hired and placed people based on impersonal applications and bland resumes. By applying a simple personality, we can go a step further to getting the right people in the right place. Not only is this a benefit to the team here at Wossamotta U, but the new employee will be happiest and most productive working in a roll that suites them the best.
Variance
Research is always an ongoing project (as we know at the University) as such be sure to check back on this blog often. Until then keep in mind that just like a mirror what you see depends on who is looking. While there are several theories of personality there is also the nature verses nurture debate. Current work leads towards a hybrid of the two (Heffner, 2017).
Q&A
Are there more than 5 traits?
A large part of that answer depends on the person themselves. Five is a good universal building block, but (and the person’s culture has a lot of influence on this) in 2001 Fanny Cheung and colleagues researched additional traits in China (Matsumoto, & Juang, 2013).

How accurate are the personality test?
Only as accurate as the person taking the test. All (almost all) of these personality tests are self-reporting. That Is to say it involves the person answering questions about themselves. If the person in question is not being honest on the test, then the results will be less than accurate.
What if the test says an employee is not suitable for a particular job?
That is why we still have people working in the personal section. No standardized test can account for every contingency. We still rely on personal contact. If a potential employee does not want, for example a job working in the field, then we would be foolish to place them in one just because of the results of a test. Test results are a tool and not a crutch! We can use them to help us the best people in the best positions, but we cannot discount personal interaction and intuition.
