‘Super’ Work for Derby Hopeful Dazzling Gem...

Steve Landers Racing’s Dazzling Gem (Misremembered),
who sits 24th in the Derby points standings, worked five
panels in 1:00.40 (9/57) at Churchill Downs shortly after
the track opened Saturday morning.
“He worked super good,” conditioner Brad Cox said. “He
couldn't have worked any better. He seems to have cooled
out good. I'm super encouraged by it. Hopefully, we'll draw
in.”
If the bay, who was third in the GII Louisiana Derby Mar. 26
and fourth in the GI Arkansas Derby Apr. 16, doesn’t draw in
to the Derby, he will point for either the Preakness or the GII
Peter Pan S. at Belmont May 14.

PREAKNESS A POSSIBILITY FOR UNCLE LINO
By Mary Reeder

Uncle Lino, who set a 1:40 4/5 track record for 1
1/16 miles in the inaugural running of the California
Chrome Stakes at Los Alamitos Race Course April
30, may be heading to the May 21 Preakness (gr. I).
The Uncle Mo colt picked up his first stakes win in
the California Chrome after finishing third in the
Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) behind Kentucky Derby
(gr. I) hopefuls Exaggerator and Mor Spirit.
The 3-year-old colt has only one off-the-board finish
in seven starts—a fourth in the San Felipe (gr. II).
Along with Tom Mansor and Jim Glavin’s Purple
Shamrock Racing, trainer Gary Sherlock is a partner
in the horse’s ownership. Sherlock picked up the
colt for $52,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September
yearling sale.
“We’ve been talking about the Preakness,” Sherlock
said. “We’ll see how he comes out of this race.
We get an extra week from the Derby horses. Some-
body asked me if this horse should win today. I said,
‘Well, the horses that have been beating him are
running in the Kentucky Derby, so I think he’s got a
pretty good chance.’‘’ BH

I recently wrote a piece about Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome...a very special horse whose journey to, and through, this year's Triple Crown immensely moved and inspired me, as I know it did countless others across the country. My little opinion piece, a tribute to California Chrome and the effect he had on the country, was published in the Colorado Springs Gazette as a letter to the editor. The text of my piece, and the link to where it appears in the Gazette, are pasted below. :)
-----------------------------------------------------

I, like so many this past weekend, were hoping to see California Chrome victorious in his bid to claim the Triple Crown. Even though this did not come to pass, the impact that this remarkable horse had, not just in the racing world, but across the country, is extraordinary. And I hope it will not fade, just because the Triple Crown victory was not realized... In many ways, America is the story of the long shots, the under-dogs. California Chrome gave us another chapter in that remarkable story. For one brief, shining moment, California Chrome brought the nation together, people from all walks of life, cheering for this amazing horse whose spirit and heart inspired us all. And that is a rare and beautiful thing. California Chrome's legacy is one not just of victory, but of national unity, of inspiration, courage, strength, spirit, and hope. A glorious and unique mixture - a gift - that arises every once and awhile and usually in the unlikeliest of places, reminding us all, yet again, of the inspiration and joy that comes from hope, faith, heart, and having the courage to contend. Thank you, California Chrome!

The Breeders' Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade I Thoroughbred horse races, operated by Breeders' Cup Limited, a company formed in 1982. From its inception in 1984 through 2006, it was a single-day event; starting in 2007, it expanded to two days. All sites have been in the United States, except in 1996, when the races were at the Woodbine Racetrack in Canada.

The attendance at the Breeders' Cup ranks fourth or fifth in North America[vague] and usually surpasses the attendance of all other stakes races. The attendance of the Breeders' Cup typically only trails the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Oaks (and in some years, the Belmont Stakes); for more information see American Thoroughbred Racing top Attended Events.

With the addition of three new races for 2008, a total of $25.5 million was awarded over the two days, up from $23 million in 2007. Each Breeders' Cup race awards to the winner a garland of flowers draped over the withers of the winning horse and four Breeders' Cup trophies presented to the connections of the winners.

In the 2015 listing of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), three Breeders' Cup races are ranked among the top Grade 1 races in the world: the Classic (4th), the Turf . . . . .

https://plus.google.com/118287182731909579925 Woodbine Racetrack : Bratt Bits: Friday and Saturday insights by WoodbineBratt: By Jeff Bratt for WoodbineEntertainment.Com...
Bratt Bits: Friday and Saturday insights by WoodbineBratt: By Jeff Bratt for WoodbineEntertainment.Com   TORONTO, April 28 -The fourth week of the thoroughbred season kicks off on Friday at Woodbine with a nine race program.  A true sign that our season is starting to gain momentum is that only three of the nine races are at 5 ½ furlongs or less in distance.  The longer distance races are become more of a regular occurrence, including a race that I’m looking forward to on Friday.   Race Eight on the Friday program is one for Ontario Sired runners that sees the return of a horse, Nipigon, that at one time was thought to be a Queen’s Plate contender.    Nipigon is going to be favoured in this affair, and though he may not offer any value, it's good for fans any time a very nice horse returns to racing.  Nipigon wrapped up his two-year-old campaign with a narrow defeat in the Coronation Futurity.  After his three-year-old debut in Kentucky, the son of Niigon was put onto the sidelines and did not resurface until the beginning of this month at Tampa Bay Downs.  I thought he was delayed on the far turn in his comeback race and finished nicely to cross the line third with the addition of Lasix.  Trainer Rachel Halden is 7 for 32 (22%) (ROI $2.18) with horses starting for the second time off a layoff.  He won’t be much of a price on Friday, but I think he has a great shot to get back to the winners circle.    Nipigon will be a short price on Friday...   Let’s try to maximize our profits on Nipigon in Race Eight, by playing a late double.  Race nine is a starter allowance event for horses that have started for a claiming price of $16,000 or less in 2015 or 2016.  Gran Bid is the horse to beat in this affair.  He looked great in his comeback race for trainer Willie Armata.  Armata has solid stats in his first start off a layoff, but not as good second time out.  Eminent Force is the one I will go towards in this tilt.  Sent out by trainer Mike DePaulo, Eminent Force wired a field at Gulfstream Park and has put up some decent clockings in the morning getting ready for this race.  He has yet to win on a synthetic surface, but I think he is in great form right now and could get the better of Gran Bid.   A couple of other quick notes for Friday’s card:   Race 1 #6 Patsy’s Star - Could be the speed of the speed for a jockey/trainer combo that was 20% last year and in the money 50% of the time.   Early Pick Four ticket: R4 – 2,7,8,9 R5 – 2,3,9 R6 – 1,2 R7 – 2,3,5 Total $72/$14.40 (for $0.20)   A rare Saturday at Woodbine this week when a stakes race is not scheduled.  There are some big races on the card though with some big names.  Race Eight features a nice battle between champions Strut the Course and Lexie Lou.    Strut the Course is coming off another great year, and with some more racing luck it could have been even better.  The daughter of Strut the Stage won two of six starts last year, but had traffic filled trips in the E. P. Taylor and Nassau.  I’m going to go in her direction over 2014 Canadian Horse Of The Year, Lexie Lou.    Lexie Lou is two races into her comeback and could be sitting on a really good effort.  In her last start at Tampa, she could not get close to stablemate Tepin, but few can.  Her first start in her comeback saw her have an extremely wide trip resulting in a third place finish.  The question one has to ask going into this race is, can Lexie Lou get back to the great form we saw her have during her three year old campaign?  At a low price on the tote board I’m going to go with Strut the Course, but Lexie might get the last laugh.   Lexie Lou returns on Saturday...   An interesting entrant in the ninth race on the card is a daughter of Bernstein named My Bethany who will now go into the gate for trainer Roger Attfield.  My Bethany debuted at Kempton last November and blew away a field of maidens.  How good that field was is the hard part to determine.  She did beat the race favourite.  It looks like she has been sold since her last start and the way she finished in her first start showed me she could have some talent.  To watch the replay, click this link.   Other notes for Saturday:   Race 4 #7 Kelly Bird - DiPasquale the last fives years is 4 for 16 with first timers in maiden claiming races - Others in this race have had numerous chances   Race 6 #5 Tilbury Court - 1st and 2nd place finishers from the Frost King Stakes have come back to win - Winter trained and barn can have one ready off the bench   Race 5 #7 Strike Right Now - Debuted on turf at Gulfstream and ran respectively - Pierce with 2nd time starters going turf to synthetic and sprint to route the last 5 years is: 3-0-2-1   Early Pick Four ticket for Saturday: R4 – 4,7 R5 – 2,7 R6 – 4,5 R7 – ALL Total $72/$14.40 (for $0.20)   Throw Back Thursday:   Just one week to go before the Kentucky Derby!  Two horses that have won the Derby in the past that I thought I would look at are Animal Kingdom and Monarchos. Animal Kingdom is currently standing at Darley's Jonabell Farm in Lexington Kentucky.  The son of Leroidesanimaux won the Kentucky Derby at 20-1, and then went on to finish second and sixth in the Preakness and Belmont respectively. Animal Kingdom ran just twice as a four-year-old with his last race of that year resulting in a troubled second place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.  Trainer Graham Motion sent Animal Kingdom to Dubai during his five year old campaign, and saw him win the Dubai World Cup by two lengths.  After a poor race at Royal Ascot he was retired.   Animal Kingdom... (Photo courtesy of Emily Shields)   Monarchos is currently enjoying lots of attention at Nuckols Farm under the care of Charles Nuckols III.  Now at 18 years of age, the son of Maria’s Mon is still standing stud while also enjoying the life of leisure on the same grounds that another Kentucky Derby winner War Emblem was raised.  Monarchos during his racing career was trained by John Ward and raced for John Oxley.  Jorge Chavez was aboard for his Kentucky Derby win.   Monarchos...
