Run For The Roses written & performed by Dan Fogelberg will always be a classic masterpiece. Enjoy his gift to us. RIP Dan Fogelberg, we won't ever forget you & your musical genius. Run For the Roses is a beautiful song loved by many. In 1980, Genuine Risk, an incredible equine won the Kentucky Derby. She became 1st filly since Regret won in 1915. Genuine Risk also wo Preakness but was 2nd in Belmont.

Dalos patiently chasing Queen’s Plate dream: TORONTO, April 19 – Owner-breeder Ivan Dalos boasts a pair of horses in the Queen’s Plate Winterbook top ten, led by filly Aragorn Ami (6-1) and colt Ami’s Holiday (10-1) as he seeks a first victory in the Canadian classic.   (For a vintage TV feature on Dalos, click the 'WATCH VIDEO' button on the right-hand side of this page)   In 1998, Dalos, a 72-year-old native of Budapest, Hungary, rose to prominence when Victory Gallop, a horse he bred in Ontario and later sold made waves on the U.S. Triple Crown trail.   Racing for owners Prestonwood Farm, Victory Gallop finished second to Real Quiet in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before spoiling his rival’s Triple Crown bid with a nose victory in the Belmont Stakes.   A dream year continued as Victory Gallop, by Cryptoclearance out of Dalos’ stakes winning mare Victorious Lil, would go on to finish second in the Travers at Saratoga, by a nose to Coronado’s Quest, and fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, at Churchill Downs, defeated less than a length by Awesome Again.   “I bred a horse that came second in the Derby. I’ve done it once but it didn’t happen in my silks,” said Dalos. “I want to do it again with a horse that will race in my own colours. It’s the dream. Everybody wants a Plate horse, a Derby horse and a Breeders’ Cup horse.”   Ivan Dalos at Woodbine... (Keith McCalmont photo)   Dalos has enjoyed a degree of success as an owner and breeder in the years since Victory Gallop, in particular with the mare Fly For Avie who captured the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes in 2000.   However, it is a score in a mile and a quarter main track classic that inspires Dalos to continue breeding horses at his Tall Oaks Farm, a nom de plume for a broodmare band 22 strong that splits time between a contract farm in Paris, Kentucky and at Norse Ridge Farm in Ontario.   His current classic chasing duo of Ami’s Holiday and Aragorn Ami, both trained by Josie Carroll, are heavily influenced by Victory Gallop who is the damsire of both contenders.   Aragorn Ami is out of the unraced Galloping Ami (Victory Gallop-Secret Ami), while Ami’s Holiday is out of the stakes winning Victorious Ami (Victory Gallop-Secret Ami).   “This is a family I’ve been developing for a long time,” said Dalos. “This is the fourth and fifth generation of this family and it has taken generations to improve the broodmare side to get better horses. It takes time.”   Ami’s Holiday, a half-length winner of the Grade 3 Grey Stakes at Woodbine in October, makes his three-year-old debut in Saturday’s Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland.   Although a win in the Lexington would garner 10 points and an outside chance at making the Kentucky Derby starting gate, Dalos won’t rush the bay colt whose winter training at Oaklawn Park was interrupted by bad weather.   “He’s not going to make it,” explained Dalos. “(The Lexington is) too close to the Derby…if we had an extra week, I would definitely consider it. Two weeks is too close.”   Instead, Ami’s Holiday will focus on the Preakness Stakes with the long-term goal of winning the $1-million Queen’s Plate.   Aragorn Ami, an improving filly, is undefeated in two starts.  The talented bay broke her maiden at first asking on December 15 sprinting over the Woodbine ‘Poly’ and earned her first stakes win on February 1 at Oaklawn Park with a determined stretch run in the Martha Washington Stakes.   Aragorn Ami is currently enjoying some time off before she returns to action.   “She got a little body sore, a little jarred up and we decided to give her a little breather because we have a long season ahead,” said Carroll in the release for the Queen’s Plate Winterbook posted March 20.   And so, Dalos patiently waits to reap the benefits of his years of tinkering with a family line on the cusp of producing big results.   * Most horse racing fans, particularly ones as invested as Dalos, get their start in the game with a decidedly positive experience.   This was not the case for Dalos, a partner in a Toronto-area construction business that installs wood flooring.   “One of my contractors came in to pick up a cheque and as we were talking he mentioned he was in a hurry to get to the racetrack,” recalled Dalos of a mid-1970s business meeting.   An invitation was extended by the contractor to enjoy a day at the races, Dalos accepted, and he’s been a fan of the sport ever since.   Well, much more than a fan, really.   “A few weeks later the contractor came back and asked if I was seriously interested in racing and told me that he was going to claim a horse,” said Dalos. “I asked my business partner, my brother in law, and he decided to join in. We put the claim slip in and off we went to watch the race.”   A fairy tale ending would see the horse they were about to own come flying down the stretch to win a photo finish.  Not a chance.   “Off goes the race and I can’t see the horse we’re claiming,” laughed Dalos. “They come around the turn and I still can’t see the horse and finally a horse wins the race but I still haven’t seen our horse.”   Dalos had to ask his friend where his brand new investment had finished.   “My friend said sheepishly, ‘He’s at the turn’” said Dalos. “The horse finished dead last by 45 lengths.”   That first horse, name long forgotten, did not work out.  And neither did the partnership with his contractor, but Dalos’ attraction to racing was strong and he was already developing his own theories on how to play the game.   “My partner wanted to keep claiming horses to run them every week because he was a gambler and liked the action,” explained Dalos. “I don’t bet and I didn’t want to race them every week so we separated our business so I could go about getting better horses.”   Ami's Holiday surges to victory (Michael Burns Photo)   *   To reach the current crop of the ‘Ami’ family has been a long and bumpy road for Dalos.   “I read every breeding book I could get my hands on,” said Dalos. “I must have read a hundred different books on breeding, the history of breeding, history of the thoroughbred, female family theory, anything I could get my hands on to learn about breeding.  And from those books I started developing my own theories on breeding a good horse.”   After all that studying and years spent watching horses race and train, Dalos knows what he is looking for in a racehorse.   “Physical confirmation is obviously important but there are families that are better than others,” said Dalos. “There are certain lines produce better horses and it’s important to know where they came from.   “I believe in nicking. And even intuition. It’s important to have a good feeling about the whole thing.”   Trying to accomplish his goal of developing a classic winner is a costly task.   “It’s taken generations to improve the broodmare side to get better horses and it takes time,” offered Dalos. “Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of being able to breed to six-figure stallions, so I do it within a lower level of stallion which makes it tougher.  Anyone can breed to an A.P. Indy, but it’s much tougher to go to a stallion not of that caliber when you’re concerned with cost.”   His ‘Ami’ family traces back to the Alwasmi mare Sybelle Ami who made two winless starts at Greenwood before being retired.   “Sybelle Ami, as a two-year-old blew her knees out, but I kept her because she had showed talent,” said Dalos. “I got Secret Ami out of her and from there we got Victorious Ami who was a stakes horse.”   Victorious Ami, the dam of Ami’s Holiday, captured the 2002 edition of the Princess Elizabeth Stakes and a year later finished third in the Woodbine Oaks won by Gold Strike. “This ‘Ami’ line is coming along and it’s getting better and better with each generation as I try to improve the family,” said Dalos.   In his mind, there is one key family trait to the ‘Ami’ family success.   “They have determination. Most of them will race through pain,” said Dalos. “It’s actually one of the things you have to be careful about with them as they don’t necessarily show if they’re hurting and they keep trying. So we take our time.”   Aragorn Ami breaks her maiden at snowy Woodbine (Michael Burns Photo) *   On Saturday, Dalos will sit back and enjoy the experience of watching Ami’s Holiday, a horse in which he has invested years creating, burst from the gate at Keeneland.   While one Queen's Plate contender races, the other sits on the sidelines.   Ever patient, Dalos contentedly awaits the return of his Queen’s Plate Winterbook second-choice Aragorn Ami. That the selectors put the filly ahead of his colt in the pecking order is a source of amusement for Dalos.   “I’m surprised,” he laughed. “She’s only had two races in her lifetime. How can they like her that much? But, I’m not a bettor. My betting effort comes in the money I invest in breeding them.”   Given the opportunity, however, Dalos finds it hard to separate the two horses.   “Ami’s Holiday has more starts, more experience and knows a bit more about racing than ‘Aragorn’ who is still green,” started Dalos. “But, she’s a late foal. I can’t pick a favourite of the two. If one of them can do it, I’d be over the moon.”   For some, it would be frustrating to sit and wait for a good horse to come around, but for Dalos, he savours the experience like one would a fine wine lifted off the shelf in some dusty cellar.   “I decided that the best challenge, for me, was to breed a horse,” he grinned. “Anybody can buy a horse if you have money, but to breed a good horse is a different story. I like challenges. I just hope I can live long enough to see the end result!" http://weg.bz/1jTAYfs
