Horse dies after win at Preakness Stakes track
Saturday was supposed to be a great day for horse racing with the 2016 Preakness Stakes set for 6:45 p.m. ET at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Unfortunately, the day began with a very sad event. Homeboykris, a nine-year-old horse who won the first race of the Preakness schedule Saturday, died of an apparent heart attack shortly after leaving the winner’s circle. #Homeboykris, winner of 1st race on #Preakness day, collapses, dies on way back to...

Bratt Bits: Friday and Saturday insights by WoodbineBratt: By Jeff Bratt for WoodbineEntertainment.Com   TORONTO, May 26 - After a great long weekend of racing at Woodbine, we are ready to get things rolling once again on Friday and the turf course and Tapeta surface will be busy all weekend long.  On Saturday the older boys with line up in the Gr. II Eclipse Stakes and then on Sunday the ladies will do battle on the lawn in the Gr. II Nassau.  Turf stakes action is finally back!   Friday’s nine-race card has something that you don’t see everyday: every race is for claimers.  Don’t let that fool you though.  There are great wagering opportunities on this card and some highly competitive races.    The lone turf race on the program is for $40,000 claimers at 6 ½ furlongs.  Too Many Egbert’s is a contender in this one for trainer Paul Buttigieg.  He has run some good races on the turf in the past including a stakes win back in 2014.  He might need one off the bench like some of the Paul Buttigieg horses have this season.  Another stakes winner in the field is San Nicola Thunder, who is also making his season debut and drops down in class.    Stakes winner San Nicola Thunder is dropping in class... (Michael Burns Photo)   However, I’m going to go with Best Bard who has been reunited with trainer James Smith.  The only thing that worries me with him is the distance.  He is really going to have to hustle going just 6 ½ furlongs.  Usually he wants more ground, but if the turf course has a little cut to it that will certainly help out his chances.  Best Bard has run some dynamite races in the past on the grass at Woodbine.  His last start came at Gulfstream Park at the beginning of April in an optional claiming affair on the dirt.  He finished fifth on that day but that race has turned out to be a key affair.  The first, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth place finishers have all come back to win.   One horse that deserves another shot is Dibs in race one.  She overcame a huge incident at the start to run well when dropped in class.  The stewards ruled that Dibs did not receive a fair start after being inadvertently held by one of the assistant starters.  After that she put in a nice run, eventually finishing fourth losing by just over three lengths.  I think she has found her appropriate level and distance.   A couple of other horses to keep watch on Friday’s card are:   Race 5 #4 Final Offer - Best race came last fall when 2nd in a route race - Trainer Martin Drexler the last 5 years second start off a layoff is 18-67 (27%) (ROI $2.91)   Race 9 #12 Super Story - Was not as impressive in his latest as he was two starts ago - A. Garcia/Vella the last 2 years are 12-53 (23%) (ROI $2.28)   My preliminary early Pick Four ticket is: R4 - 3,4,6,8 R5 - 4,6 R6 - 7,9 R7 - 2,3,8,10 Total $64/$12.80 (for $0.20)   Not only do we have the Gr. II Eclipse on Saturday, but we also have the return of two-year-old racing at Woodbine.   Eleven two-year-olds are entered in Saturday’s second race, but only 10 will line up (one is currently on the also eligible list.)  The field is a mix of Ontario Sired horses taking on American-breds.  Mark Casse has entered two including Reverse who will start from post position one, and Enstone who will go from post five. Of the two Casse horses, I prefer Enstone who shows some promising works.  I am going to try and beat both Casse horses with Ontario Sired, Raglan Road.  Raglan Road is a son of Victor’s Cry who shows a slew of works getting ready for her debut.  She is trained by John Ross who during the last five years at Woodbine, with first time starting two year olds, is 4 for 16 (25%) with a ROI of $2.53.   Six horses will do battle in the Gr.II Eclipse for a purse of $200,000.  Five of the six have won stakes races.  Canada’s champion older horse from last year, Are You Kidding Me, has a race under his belt at Keeneland.  It came in a tough spot in the Gr. I Makers Mark Mile.  He didn’t run well there, but it is likely to be a perfect tightner.  I think Melmich could be the king of the older horse division this season at Woodbine if he picks up where he left off from last year.  It’s quite possible he may need one off the layoff, but I’m still going to give him the slight nod in this one.  If he is fully cranked he is as good as anyone else in this field, if not better.  There is not much early speed in the Eclipse and I would love to see Da Silva play catch me if you can.   Other horses to watch on Saturday are:   Race 6 #2 Turn Back Time - Three best races have taking place on a synthetic surface - Casse the last 5 years going dirt to synthetic is 36-140 (26%)   Race 9 #7 Super Sarah - Looks like an improved horses early this season - J. Mattine the last 5 years going sprint to route has a ROI of $3.47   My preliminary early Pick Four ticket for Saturday is: R4 – 7,8,10 R5 – 6,9 R6 – 1,2 R7 – 1,2,4,9,10,11 Total $72/$14.40 (for $0.20)   ThrowBack Thursday   We are just over two weeks away from the third jewel of the American Triple Crown, the Gr. I Belmont Stakes.  The now 18-year-old Point Given won the Belmont in 2001 by over 12 lengths.  When looking back at the physically imposing Point Given’s past performances, one has to ask, “How did he possibly lose the Kentucky Derby?”  He entered the Derby off of wins in the Gr. II San Felipe and Gr. I Santa Anita Derby.  After some difficulty at the start, he could only manage a fifth-place finish in the ‘Run For The Roses.’    Jeff with Point Given... (Emily Shields Photo)   After the Derby he would go on to win four consecutive grade ones races in the Preakness, Belmont, Haskell and Travers.  He retired after his three-year-old campaign as a winner of 9 of 13 starts and earnings just shy of $4 million.  He is currently standing stud at Calumet Farms in Lexington, Kentucky and is the sire of 2007 Canadian Horse Of The Year, Sealy Hill. http://weg.bz/1P00qTu

Realities of the sport that are too real. Just an FYI for all of you who only get caught up in the glitz and glamour, mint juleps and hats. This is what's really going on every day not just three races on three saturdays.

I do feel very badly for the Jacksons though. Brought back way too many memories I'm sure.

But until this sport changes, I think I'm out. I mean really. Since Funny Cide I've watched almost every single triple crown race. I wanted to see the next triple crown winner. I knew it would happen in my lifetime, and it did, and I'm glad to have been a part of that history. But I've seen too much else.

This year I made no extra effort to watch the races live and I never watched what I recorded, due to college finals. And what I did miss I didn't feel I actually missed anything. It's not that I don't like the sport, there's just too much that I dislike. So until that changes, more DVR space for me.

Merlin's Answers!

How did your love for horses start? :333
Hmm, well it started when I watched Spirit as a kid, and I instantly fell in love with them. It grew from there, and I have loved them ever since.

What's your favorite equestrianism discipline?
Probably English riding, specifically Hunter.

What's your favorite horse?
My favorite horse that I've ridden is an Appaloosa named Romeo.

What's your favorite horse coat color?
I've always been partially to greys, but I love black coats and palominos as well.

What's your favorite horse book?
For favorite horse book, that's a tough one. Maybe The Black Stallion, though Black Beauty was a tearjerker.

Which of the twins is your favorite? Richard or John
Ahh, why do you make me choose? (Probably Richard)

What got you into horses
Spirit got me into horses.

What is your fav American horse breed
Favorite breed of American horse is probably the Quarter Horse.

do you ride western or English?
English

Like Quarter Horses?
Yes

IS MDHF AMAZING?
YES

Do you agree, or disagree with the use of a crop/spurs?
Depends on the horse and the rider in question. I think only experienced riders should use them, specifically spurs and only on certain horses.

Who do you think will win Belmont?
I'm team EXAGGERATOR for the Belmont, because I pulled for him to win the Preakness and he did, so now he's my boy.

Can you give your opinion on barrel racing, with kicking the horse's side as they pass the finish line?
Hmm, I'm not an expert, but I don't really like it. Especially if they have on spurs.

Do you think that horse riding, in several countries, is not given enough recognition?
Definitely not. Around the world in general I don't think it gets the recognition it deserves.

What sports do you like doing?
I really only do horse back riding.

Have you heard of Parkour?
Yes

Do you have a horse or get riding lessons?
No on the horse, but I do take lessons.

How did you find out about G+?
A friend.

Do you get made fun of for doing this?
No, actually.

Favourite thing about MDHF?
That I can own amazing horses I would never have in real life.

Favorite horse you've ever owned on MDHF?
As for favorite horse, that's an impossible choice between Magic, Warlock, Zeus, and Charm. (Probably Magic or Warlock, but I love the other two so much I can't really decide.)

BEST SPIRIT CHARACTER
Best Spirit character is Spirit hands down, though Rain is amazing.

Empanadas? (like handheld pie from Mexico)
Empanadas? Never had one.

WEIRDEST HORSE NAME YOU HAVE HEARD OF?
Probably Mshawish, a racehorse. (It's fun to pronounce though.)
