Dual classic-placed Grade 1 winner Bodemeister displayed brilliance during his own racing career, earning triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in four of his six career starts, led by a 109 when second in the Preakness. He just missed the triple-digit cutoff with a 99 for his runner-up effort in the Kentucky Derby.

Bodemeister, now standing at WinStar Farm, seems to have passed that talent on to his offspring. He led all freshman sires by his number of runners with Beyers 80 and above – a benchmark figure for 2-year-olds. He had five runners achieve that mark.

https://plus.google.com/118287182731909579925 Woodbine Racetrack : Breaking Lucky to represent Canada at Pegasus World Cup: TORONTO, January 20 - Breaking Lucky, winner...
Breaking Lucky to represent Canada at Pegasus World Cup: TORONTO, January 20 - Breaking Lucky, winner of the 2015 Prince of Wales Stakes, will be one of two Canadian-bred contenders, the other being 2015 Queen's Plate champ Shaman Ghost, in the upcoming Grade 1 $12-million Pegasus World Cup Invitational set for January 28 at Gulfstream Park, in Florida.   Trained by Reade Baker, Breaking Lucky ran fifth in the 2015 Queen's Plate, defeated just four lengths by Shaman Ghost, but turned the tables on his rival on the Fort Erie dirt taking the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown by a neck.   The chestnut son of Lookin at Lucky, bred in Ontario by Christine Hayden, improved by leaps and bounds as a four-year-old making the grade in the Grade 3 Seagram Cup at Woodbine while also taking his show on the road with solid placings in a number of top flight U.S. events.   [Click the link to watch UFC star Conor McGregor in a special promotional video celebrating the Pegasus World Cup Invitational]   Following his Seagram Cup score in August, Breaking Lucky traveled to Saratoga for the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes where he finished a game fourth, defeated a neck, by Shaman Ghost.  Although he came up empty as the favourite in his next start, when eighth in the Lukas Classic at Churchill Downs, a re-invigorated Breaking Lucky came through with a strong second to Gun Runner in the Grade 1 Clark, while keeping Shaman Ghost 3 1/2-lengths back in third.   The Clark effort may have done enough to convince Sovereign Award voters to select Breaking Lucky as both champion older horse and Horse of the Year.   "In my opinion he certainly ran better than any other horse that’s up for a Sovereign Award that went to the U.S. this year," said Baker.   Luis Contreras, a fixture near the top of the Woodbine jockey standings, has been aboard Breaking Lucky since the Seagram Cup win and will again be the pilot at Gulfstream.   Breaking Lucky has trained towards the Pegasus World Cup from his winter base at Palm Beach Downs in Florida where he breezed a smart five furlongs in 1:00.40 on Jan. 18.   "He came the last quarter in :23.3 and galloped out three quarters in 1:13 and change. It was perfect," said Baker.   Baker credits a combination of maturity and a change in training schedule to the recent improved efforts of the stout chestnut.   "I didn't really learn how to train him until the fall," explained Baker. "He started to get good in the fall when we'd give him more than a week off between his last work and the race. I don't know which kicked in more, but the spacing really seemed to be a good thing."   Baker was quick to acknowledge Gunpowder Farms owner Tom Keithley for allowing the time required to coax the very best out of Breaking Lucky.   "I've been very lucky as every time I've asked the owner to slow down or stop on him he's been nothing but obliging. That's what has made the horse," said Baker.   As a Grade 3 winner on Tapeta and Grade 1 placed on dirt, Baker is convinced his horse can handle any surface.   "I don't think its dirt or synthetic (that improves him). I think he's equally as good on either surface and he's just a big sound horse that's older and more mature now," said Baker.   Breaking Lucky made his debut on the Gulfstream Park main back in March of 2015 when a well-beaten fourth, but this is a much different horse now and the veteran conditioner has no concerns ahead of the Pegasus World Cup. Breaking Lucky will gallop again on Wednesday at Palm Beach Downs before shipping to Gulfstream Park where he will jog on Thursday and Friday ahead of the big event.   To win the Pegasus World Cup, Breaking Lucky will have to topple two giants of the sport in California Chrome and Arrogate.    California Chrome, with purse earnings in excess of $14-million, has won 16 of 26 starts including Grade 1 wins in the Kentucky Derby (2014), Preakness (2014), Hollywood Derby (2014), Dubai World Cup (2016), Pacific Classic (2016) and the Awesome Again Stakes (2016).   The lightly raced Arrogate has won five of six career starts.  He burst into the national spotlight in August with a romping 13 1/2-length score in the Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga and then proved it was no fluke by collaring California Chrome with a final surge to win the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic.   "We're in pretty deep waters here," admitted Baker. "But, there are a lot of factors."   One key factor is the recent addition of the pacey Noble Bird, trained by Mark Casse for John Oxley, to the Pegasus field. The added speed could prove a challenge for the often prominent headliners and help set up an opportunity for Breaking Lucky to have first run should the speed collapse.   "He (Breaking Lucky) can sit anywhere you want him to. The game has changed now because Noble Bird is a lead only horse," offered Baker. "When he goes to the lead how far will he advance them? He might have changed the pace from a :47 and change first half-mile to a :46. But, I'm not going to try and ride him. I've got a very good professional rider and I'll let him make the judgment.”   Breaking Lucky is expected to be listed at 25-1 on the morning line for the Pegasus World Cup but local punters are well aware of Baker's ability to pull off the unexpected.    In 2015, Baker captured the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks with 66-1 shot Academic; he sent out 21-1 River Rush to take the 2012 running of the Plate Trial; and one would need to look no further than Breaking Lucky's own running lines to find powerful efforts at inflated odds including a runner-up run in the Clark at 46-1.   Baker has no qualms about taking a shot in the world's richest race.   "It's what you're supposed to do," said Baker. "You're supposed to aim right for the top level and that's what we're going to do. This is a dream come true for me. I love the pressure. A good horse going two turns with real good horses. This is what I want to do."   And the fact that the Toronto native is doing it with a Canadian-bred makes it that much sweeter.   "It sure does. You hear the knock all the time that you can't raise a good horse up there. It's too cold," said Baker. "Well, we've already proven he's a good horse raised in Ontario. Let's hope he's a real special horse."   Breaking Lucky will represent Gunpowder Farms, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, R.A. Hill Stable and West Point Thoroughbreds, a group that includes retired track announcer Tom Durkin, in the Pegasus.   The opening lines for the remainder of the expected 12-horse field are: California Chrome (4-5); Arrogate (Even); Noble Bird (12-1); Keen Ice (20-1); Neolithic (20-1); Shaman Ghost (25-1); Breaking Lucky (25-1); Eragon (40-1); War Envoy (50-1); War Story (50-1); Ralis (50-1); and Prayer for Relief (75-1).   [Grade 1 winner Gun Runner could take the place of War Envoy if a quarantine issue at Fair Grounds is resolved.]   The Pegasus World Cup Invitational will be broadcast live on NBC.  For more information visit PegasusWorldCup.com. http://weg.bz/2iJEZvL

FEATURE: Make Ontario Awesome Again…: By Chris Lomon for WoodbineEntertainment.com   TORONTO, January 13 - At first glance, it’s an advertisement that seemingly trumps all competitors for its wit and whimsy. But, as Dermot Carty points out, there’s a much bigger message behind it all.   The play on words is obvious the moment you see it. Just below the colour photo of the striking bay horse reads ‘Make Ontario Awesome Again’ – a take on U.S. President elect Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, ‘Make America Great Again!’ – accompanied by a Canadian flag, names of his standout progeny, and eye-popping stats heralding one of thoroughbred racing’s most prolific performers and sires.   “We were actually having dinner with Alex and Allen Kershaw in Lexington and we were talking about breeding and how many great stallions are out there that have produced some great racehorses,” recalled Carty, Director of Sales with International Bloodstock Agency. “There are a lot of people that don’t recognize there are a lot of really good horses that have been bred in Ontario and Canada.”   The conversation then drifted into politics, specifically, the recent U.S. elections.   “We were laughing about Trump and talking about the, ‘Make America Great!’ slogan,” said Carty. “Andy Stronach said, ‘Why don’t we say, ‘Let’s Make America Awesome Again.’ So, we thought we’d just take it to another level and so that’s what we did. Then we came up with the, ‘Make Ontario Awesome Again,’ and we just ran with it.”   The poster boy, so to speak, at the centre of the ad, is a bona fide thoroughbred rock star.   Bred and owned by Frank Stronach, Awesome Again, sired by Deputy Minister and out of the 2000 Broodmare of the Year Primal Force, would have an abbreviated racing career, winning nine of 12 starts.   Awesome Again with winning jockey Mike Smith...   But what a career it was.   At three, Awesome Again won the Queen's Plate. He took the Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga, then finished third in the Travers Stakes. His 1997 campaign came to a close after an injury suffered when finishing fifth in the Super Derby.    “The day that he won the Queen’s Plate was the day after Andy was married,” noted Carty. “It was a great weekend all around. We had the wedding the Saturday night and then we all went to the races the next morning. And he goes out and wins the Plate.   There were no bleary eyes as Awesome Again bounded to a 3 ½-length win in the 138th running of Canada’s most famous horse race.   “I was the best man at the wedding, so I had some important things to take care of,” said Carty with a laugh. “It was a fantastic day for all of us.”   In 1998, Awesome Again went six-for-six, going hoof-to-hoof against heavyweight competition that included champions Silver Charm and Skip Away, punctuated by a rallying score at odds of 9-2 against top rate Breeders' Cup Classic rivals at Churchill Downs.   As a sire, Awesome Again is just as awesome.   He counts Ghostzapper, 2004 Eclipse Award recipient as Horse of the Year in the United States and the World's Top Ranked Horse that year, as recognized in the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings, as one of many champions he produced.   Awesome Again put himself in the history books as the first Breeders' Cup Classic winner to sire a winner of that race when Ghostzapper took the Classic 13 years ago. That day became doubly special when Wilko, another son, won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, making Awesome Again the first-ever Breeders' Cup champ to sire two Breeders' Cup winners on one day.   Other offspring of note include Round Pond, 2006 Breeders' Cup Distaff champ, filly Spun Sugar, who took the 2006 Apple Blossom and Go For Wand Handicap, 2007 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Ginger Punch, Game On Dude, three-time winner of the Santa Anita Handicap, the Goodwood Stakes, and Hollywood Gold Cup, Paynter, second in the 2012 Belmont Stakes and Haskell Invitational victor, and Oxbow, who was victorious in the 2013 Preakness Stakes.   The Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita Park was renamed Awesome Again Stakes in 2012.   “He won the Plate, the Breeders’ Cup Classic and he’s sired four Breeders’ Cup winners,” pointed out Carty. “Nobody has done what he’s done. He’s remarkable in every sense of the word.   “Northern Dancer was phenomenal and then he had a son, Vice Regent, who was very talented,” continued Carty. “Then he had a great horse, Deputy Minister, who was better than Vice Regent. And then Deputy Minister sired Awesome Again who is better than him. And Awesome Again sires Ghostzapper. It’s just great breeding.”   Added Carty, “Awesome Again has turned out to be the sire of sires.”   Awesome Again wins the Classic... (Breeders' Cup Photo)   And most certainly worthy of promoting in a tongue-in-cheek, yet flattering manner.   “The whole thing - Let’s Make America Awesome Again and Let’s make Ontario Awesome Again – is obviously a spoof on Trump’s words, but it’s fun, and it’s a nice way of looking at it,” offered Carty.   Fun, he noted, is what Carty and co. hope the biggest takeaway is from the ad.   “What’s happened is that a lot of people have gotten away from the fun side of racing,” explained Carty. “They’ve gone and tried to turn it into this great big business. Based on my experience, we had fun. It’s all about having fun and enjoying racing.   “That’s the message we are trying to get across here in Aurora. We are trying to get people more involved in Ontario racing, through our advertising, through our open house and stallion show. We want to show people how fun and enjoyable it is. We’re Canadian, we race here and we want to show everyone what we are all about. At the end of the day, this is still fun.”   And as the ad proudly heralds, it’s poised to be awesome again. http://weg.bz/2jMNeam

I’ve said in the past my brother Scott is my idol,” he said. “He’s taught me everything I know and he continues to be my coach. He’s had the best year of his career at age 57. I’m following his footsteps. We have a lot of conversations about this. He says, ‘I love what I do, I’m making great money doing it, I ride what I want to ride.’ Over the past three, four years coming back from retirement I’ve ridden some of the best horses in the world. Beholder (Henny Hughes). I won the [GI] Preakness S. with Oxbow (Awesome Again). I came close in the Kentucky Derby against American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) with Firing Line (Line of David). I have been on a great run. When I am comfortable and can ride without the pain, it’s the best job in the world. I’d rather go out on the racetrack on a Saturday and ride a great horse than be on the golf course, and I’m getting paid to do it. My thinking is, as long as I am an asset and not a hindrance, why not? There are no rules about this. Shoe won his last Derby. Who says I won’t win another Derby?”

Prior to the surgery, Stevens announced that he had reached an agreement to be the stable rider for the growing Ruis Racing stable. He will continue in that role following his return and said there is a distinct possibility he will continue to work for Ruis in some capacity after he stops riding.
» Stevens Expects to Return in Spring, Says 2017 Likely Last Year
Encouraged by how well he is doing following Dec. 21 hip replacement surgery, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens believes he’ll be back riding in about 10 weeks. However, his latest comeback may be a …

Pimlico makes the most money for the year, while you built an off track site about 10 minutes away, so why close it. Also Baltimore City built the Preakness to what it is today and you want to mess with 142 years of tradition.
Maryland Jockey Club moves more 2017 dates to Laurel
