Evening all,

Here's my story on today's Rangers victory over the Detroit Red Wings:

Hank fires a blank at the Red Wings.

"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"

King Leonidas delivered those orders with passion and purpose in the Movie 300.

And speaking of 300, that number means a great deal to another King as well.

That would be King Henrik, also known as Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers.

#30 played with passion and purpose today, and garnered career victory number 300 in today's 3-zip Blueshirts win over the Detroit Red Wings at Madison Square Garden.

He gave them nothing.

Thirty shots on goal by Detroit today. Not one hit the back of the net. It was the King's 49th career shutout, tying him with legendary Rangers goaltender Ed Giacomin for the franchise record.

And...the Rangers took from them everything.

Today's triumph made it a perfect 3 for 3 against the Winged Wheel this season. And Lundqvist's second shutout of Mike Babcock's crew during the '13-'14 campaign.

A fine win against a fine hockey club. Plus, it moves the Rangers back into second place in the Metro Division, one point ahead of the Orange Crud.

Here are more of my thoughts on today's tilt:

A rolling Boyle: Or should I say a spinning one. Brian Boyle nets his fifth of the season. It was a spin shot off of a broken play early in the first period. And Boyle will gladly take it. Good for the big rig to get on the scoresheet.

St. Louis = sweet passer: Number 26 can really dish it out. That cross-ice rocket to Brad Richards in the first period from the far boards in the Red Wings Zone was a tape to tape thing of beauty.

The amazing Kreider-man: Chris Kreider is a true talent. He has the ideal combination of size, speed, strength and skill. A true "4S player" as I like to call them. But sometimes, he doesn't use his brain. He took a holding penalty in the neutral zone at just :22 of the second period. A player with his wheels should never be called for that infraction. He did however, make up for it by scoring the Rangers second and third goals during the 3rd period. His second of the day in particular showed #20's gifts. He flew down the left side on a two-on-one with Derek Stepan and sniped a snap shot past Jimmy Howard. Want to see more of that from the Boston College grad.

And speaking of the BC Eagles, with Boyle and Kreider, today's goal scorers, hail from that Beantown bastion of higher learning.

There's no I in G: Dan Girardi is all about the team. Right after the buzzer sounds, he gets the puck for the King and drops it in his trapper. Obviously, he recognized the importance of the moment. Nice touch, G.

Mac Truck is a hip dude: What more can you say about Ryan McDonagh? Not only is he one of the best shutdown D-men in the NHL, he's got 11 goals on the season. And has the potential to get even more. Head Coach Alain Vigneault turned him loose and the results speak for themselves.
Oh and by the way, that so-called tripping penalty on McD in the first period was a straight-up beauty of a hip check on Johan Franzen. Refs flew it. 'Nuff said.

Breakout performances on Broadway: The Rangers breakout passes from their D-zone have really improved under AV. This was evident today on numerous occasions. They stretch the ice with long pinpoint passes and activate quick offensive break-ins with their speed. Didn't see that under the previous regime.

I remember Renney: Former Rangers bench boss Tom Renney is an assistant to Mike Babcock with the Wings. He did a fine job on Broadway. Particularly in the 2005-2006 season, when the Rangers, fresh off the lockout and seven consecutive seasons of not making the playoffs, finished with 100 points. Nice to see him employed by such a great organization.

Other things of note:

Dominic Moore notched his 200th NHL point with an assist on the Boyle goal.

If Gustav Nyquist starts putting opponents to sleep with his moves, they may change his last name to Nyquil.

Need for Speed: Saw the commercial for that upcoming movie during the game. You think that car chase thing is the right vehicle for Aaron Paul after Breaking Bad? No pun intended, folks.

Pierre McGuire: Come on, Pierre! Stop talking about what Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg would have done if they were in today's game. They weren't. The Wings got blanked. You're annoying.

How 'bout the King getting his own commercial for Advil? Fitting.
He's been giving opposing shooters headaches for years.

Last time the Rangers shut out the Red Wings twice during the same season? That was during the Nixon Administration - 1970-71.

Bottom Line: 35-26-4 heading into Tuesday's rematch with the Carolina Hurricanes down in Raleigh.

Thanks for reading.

Later.

Sochi Will Seal Detroit's Fate

Datsyuk may be the only Russian in the NHL who for some reason doesn’t get unjustly criticized by Don Cherry and Pierre McGuire. (Icon SMI)

California swing tougher than ever

A western road trip has become a visit to Murderer's Row for NHL teams this season with the three California teams combining for an .821 home winning percentage. "California is a tough trip for a ton of reasons," said NBC analyst Pierre McGuire. "Time-zone travel, great fans in all three buildings, big-bodied teams and excellent goaltending." The Anaheim Ducks' 19-0-2 home record is the fourth-best home start by any NHL team over the past 40 years. The San Jose Sharks are 16-2-3 at home, while the Los Angeles Kings are 16-6-3. "The common denominators are they all have top GMs, top coaches and all of those teams are big and ugly," said Calgary Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke, a former general manager for the Ducks.

Mike "Doc" Emrick's Passing Synonyms: A Daft Punk Mashup
We mentioned earlier this week that someone had tried to make a list of all Doc Emrick's synonyms for "pass it" used in the marathon opening game of the Stanley Cup Finals. Feeling that list was incomplete, I tracked down all 140 of them, then set them to Daft Punk.

Tuukka Rask Shuts Out Chicago Despite "Shitty" Ice; Bruins Lead 2-1
Game 3 actually ended in regulation, a nice change of pace from the first two games, but not before a short scuffle with about 11 seconds left. It looked like it was going to get really ugly for a second, but the refs quickly got control of the action and the game ended without (much) incident. Unless you count Tuukka Rask telling Pierre McGuire about how shitty the ice gets.
