On Wednesday, a day after David Wilson suffered a neck stinger and was expected to miss this weekend's Hall of Fame game, the Giants' third-year running back tweeted that he was OK.

"Left practice early yesterday but everything turned out to be fine once the (doctor) looked (at) me plus I passed all physical examination. I find out more on Monday," he said.

But multiple sources tell the New Star Ledger that months after Wilson underwent spinal fusion surgery, and coupled with his latest setback Tuesday, the former first-round pick "needs a miracle" to return to the playing field.

For now, all the Giants and Wilson can do is wait until Monday, when he will be examined by doctors for an official determination on his condition.

“We were praying that it would be not an issue," coach Tom Coughlin said earlier in the week, "that he would be able to come back and just go to work and he was cleared, as you know."

With Wilson's status still to be decided, the Giants' backfield includes Rashad Jennings, Peyton Hillis, Michael Cox and Andre Williams.

Dolphins WR Mike Wallace out through the weekend with hamstring injury
Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace will miss the team's intrasquad scrimmage this weekend with a hamstring injury. He hasn't practiced since Tuesday and won't practice until he gets evaluated next week. His status for the team's first preseason game, Aug. 8 versus the Falcons, is in doubt. However, the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero wrote Thursday, "This is not a serious injury."
Hamstring injuries must be contagious. Cecil Shorts, Le'Veon Bell, Arian Foster and Andre Johnson, Steven Jackson, Odell Beckham, Jonathan Stewart, Trent Richardson. It's been a popular week for the muscle.Since Wallace relies heavily on his deep-threat speed, such an injury is a little more concerning. We'll have an update no later than early next week when Wallace gets checked out. He still has a lot of bounce-back potential in an offense that sounds committed toward getting the most out of him.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson, who has helped Green Bay to five-straight playoff appearances and a Super Bowl XLV victory, has signed a new multi-year contract with the team, the Packers announced Wednesday.

“I'm pleased that we were able to enter into this contract extension with Ted,” Packers CEO Mark Murphy said in a statement. “His outstanding work has been the key factor in the success that we've enjoyed in recent years. I have tremendous respect for Ted, and am confident that we will continue to contend for championships under his leadership.”

The Packers and Thompson have been working on a new deal, and earlier this month, Murphy said a contract for Thompson is a "top priority." Thompson also received a contract extension in 2011.

As for why Thompson, who enters his 10th year as the team's GM, wanted to stick around for so long.

Thompson: It's easy to say I'm going to ride off into the sunset, but I have people that I'm responsible for here. People I've hired.

Giants RB David Wilson to be examined by neck surgeon, out for the week
Giants running back David Wilson underwent a battery of tests last night after suffering a neck burner during Tuesday's practice. He'll have more tests done on Aug. 4 and won't practice until then at the earliest. Next week's tests will be performed by Dr. Frank Cammisa, who also performed Wilson's spinal fusion surgery during the offseason.According to Conor Orr of the Newark Star-Ledger, Wilson is optimistic about his situation and even sent some encouraging text messages to a teammates after completing his tests last night.Dr. Robert Watkins, who has worked with Wilson in the past, told Orr that a burner is "a compression of the nerve going out to your arm ... most of the time, it's transitory and goes away."
And so we wait. Rashad Jennings would benefit most if anything kept Wilson out of game action for a big chunk of time. The Giants have a few other running backs to chip in -- rookie Andre Williams, Peyton Hillis, Michael Cox -- but none of them are as naturally talented as Wilson or possess his tremendous quickness. He would be the perfect complement to Jennings' powerful style. If Wilson's absence runs into the regular season, that will probably mean a few more touches for Jennings while Williams vultures some goal-line carries. Jennings should be viewed as a solid RB2 until Wilson returns.

NFL draft: NY Giants select Boston College RB Andre Williams in the fourth round

Mike Groll/AP Boston College running back Andre Williams is off to the races against Army here in 2012. The Giants’ offensive-minded, character-driven draft continued into the fourth round on Saturday, when the team used the 13th pick in the round to select Andre Williams out of Boston College. The 5-11, 230-pound Williams lacks breakaway speed (4.56-second 40-yard dash), but he was terrifically productive for the Eagles, rushing for 2,177 yards last season and emerging as a Heisman Trophy finalist. Williams is a thick-bodied workhorse-type running back. He provides some insurance for a squad that has a new lead back in free agent pickup Rashad Jennings, but plenty of question marks after that. Backup Peyton Hillis was solid last season, but he’s dealt with injuries in recent years. Meanwhile, explosive David Wilson is coming off offseason neck surgery, and while GM Jerry Reese has expressed optimism about Wilson’s return, there are no guarantees. Report: Browns in College Station to work out Manziel ~

Johnny Manziel was not one of the players the Browns interviewed at the combine in February. (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: Mock Drafts | Prospect Rankings | Pro Days | Top free agents

The Browns spent most of February and March pretending not to care much about Johnny Manziel. But they're now apparently interested in checking out what he might be able to offer them.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Browns brass is in College Station this weekend working out the former Texas A&M quarterback.

The Browns previously let it be known they didn't interview Manziel at the combine, which would've been a strong opportunity to get to know the quarterback. And new general manager Ray Farmer was conspicuous in his absence from Manziel's pro day in College Station; the Browns didn't send anyone there to watch Manziel.

The lack of interest in Manziel was almost too flagrant. Cleveland has a desperate need for a quarterback, the fourth overall pick and could use whatever mojo Manziel brings to reinvigorate the franchise (plus Manziel is good, not to mention a good fit for Kyle Shanahan's offense).

Eventually Farmer had to check out Manziel and see if he could be worth using with the No. 4 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Not that this interest will change much in terms of buff.ly/1gNN1r8's Mock Drafts. Manziel was already a top-10 pick on four of five boards, with two drafts projecting him to Cleveland.

It's a logical fit, really. If Manziel can impress Farmer in College Station over the weekend, it could become a reality.

Report: Giants 'hearing good things' about RB David Wilson's recovery from neck surgery
ESPN's Dan Graziano wrote in his Saturday mailbag column that the Giants "are hearing good things" about running back David Wilson as he recovers from January spinal fusion surgery. However, Graziano also opines that Wilson will play only once he is fully healthy, something that would leave the team "pleasantly surprised."
In other words, we're not really getting anywhere with Wilson at the moment. He's trying to come back, but can he? That is a question without an answer. It's why the Giants gave a four-year deal to Rashad Jennings. Even if Wilson is somehow ready to go by Week 1, Jennings is their starter. But his fantasy value also depends heavily on Wilson. If he can't return to the field, the Giants don't really have much behind Jennings on their running back depth chart. Peyton Hillis or Michael Cox could be their No. 3 RB right now. That means Jennings could continue what he kind of started last year in Oakland: being a dual-threat workhorse.Jennings has battled several injuries throughout his five-year career. He has never played in 16 games, and missed all of 2011 due to a knee injury. But he was a beast for the second half of 2013 with the Raiders and could reprise that role in the Giants' new offense. I think the 29-year-old has high-RB2 potential, but again, we will have to keep tabs on Wilson throughout the spring and summer to know how this backfield is going to look. If Wilson is available, I have no doubt in my mind that head coach Tom Coughlin will employ a value-draining timeshare. Such a thing might be great for the Giants; fantasy owners who invested in Jennings would think otherwise.

Where to next? ~ St. Louis could be one of the teams that gives Chris Johnson a look. (USATSI) More NFL offseason: Mock Drafts | Prospect Rankings | Pro days | Top free agents Former 2,000-yard rusher Chris Johnson -- a.k.a. CJ2K a.k.a. CJ?K -- was cut by the Titans on Friday. He's now a free agent heading into a very soft running back market. Despite the limited funds available to running backs in free agency, there will be interest in Johnson. He's too explosive and his production year-to-year has been too consistent for teams to completely ignore him. So where could he land? Let's look at some spots. New York Jets Rex Ryan's club has to be the favorite for Johnson's services. They fit all the criteria to land the running back. Ryan likes to run the ball and run the ball often. Geno Smith or Michael Vick under center won't change that, although Vick's mobility would help rushing lanes for Johnson. The Jets have plenty of cap space, although they probably won't use that much of it signing Johnson; John Idzik hasn't been splurging in free agency. Johnson has the best chance of becoming a "feature back" again with New York thanks to their limited depth chart. Bilal Powell, Chris Ivory, Mike Goodson and Alex Green would be his only real competition. The interest would be mutual if Johnson likes New York: When the Titans release Chris Johnson, likely later today, I continue to expect the Jets to be a primary suitor — Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) April 4, 2014 New York Giants The idea of Tom Coughlin and Chris Johnson together is ... odd. But the Giants are in pretty desperate need of an improvement in their running game. David Wilson, a former first-round pick, is completely up in the air right now. The Giants are "counting on" Wilson being ready in 2014 but that should be a red flag in and of itself. Signing Rashad Jennings in free agency helps but he was cheap and not guaranteed to carry the load in New York. Peyton Hillis is a goal line back at this point. Johnson would equate to a potential upgrade, or at least someone who can pop off big runs and keep defenses honest. Dallas Cowboys The Cowboys already have DeMarco Murray, don't have much cap space ($12 million per bit.ly/1mMcUM4) and should absolutely be more interested in improving their defense. But that's not stopping the speculation from running both wild and rampant. Thank goodness. Jerry Jones reportedly wanted Johnson back in 2008 when the Cowboys were drafted, but ended up nabbing Mike Jenkins when Jeff Fisher grabbed Johnson for the Titans. This move wouldn't make any sense at all except, well, Cowboys. Atlanta Falcons Atlanta's running game stalled out in a major way in 2013, which was particularly awkward since they signed Steven Jackson as a free agent. Coupling Johnson and Jackson would be interesting; Atlanta's in a similar spot as the Cowboys in that they need to invest more in their defense. They have less cap money than Dallas ($8.7 million per bit.ly/1mMcUM4) and a similar offense: stacked at wideout with Julio Jones and Roddy White, set at quarterback with Matt Ryan and facing some questions on the offensive line. Hard to imagine Johnson being really attracted to Atlanta based on Jackson's presence. St. Louis Rams The Jeff Fisher connection is really the only reason to keep St. Louis on here. Fisher obviously loved Johnson coming out and Johnson had great success under his old coach. The Rams have invested in the offensive line recently (and are likely to do so in the coming draft) so they should have a strong running game in 2014. Unfortunately for Johnson, it's as strong as it is because of Zac Stacy. The second-year back out of Vanderbilt exploded down the stretch for Fisher in 2013, running behind a busted offensive line and with Kellen Clemens under center. He has all the makings of a feature back, so the Rams could be hesitant to bring in Johnson and limit Stacy's touches. Johnson won't likely want to deal with a timeshare in St. Louis either.
