Patriots 13, GIANTS 16

East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Brown kicked a 37-yard field with 38 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the New York Giants to a 16-13 win over the New England Patriots and spare the clubs from the indignity of preseason overtime football. Most starters sit out the preseason finale, but quarterback Eli Manning played two series for New York. He didn't accomplish much, completing 1-of-4 passes for no yards. Ryan Nassib threw for 107 yards and Peyton Hillis had a 1-yard touchdown run for the Giants, who went 5-0 in the preseason and will open the regular season at Detroit on Sept. 8. New England rookie Jimmy Garoppolo played the entire game and finished 22-of-42 for 284 yards and a touchdown. The Patriots concluded the preseason at 2-2 and will visit Miami on Sept. 7.   #nygiants

Spanning the last 25 years, Saturday Down South has looked at the quality and volume of each SEC program’s NFL Draft picks at the running back position to determine which school deserves the title of Running Back U.
There’s several programs worthy of consideration led by impressive talents including LSU’s Joseph Addai and Kevin Faulk along with the Arkansas trio of Darren McFadden, Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis, but there’s four teams in particular who have separated from the rest of the pack thanks to Heisman awards and substantial NFL impact.

THURSDAYS #NFL NEWS UPDATE
Perhaps Donald Trump’s bid for the Bills wasn’t as big as he previously indicated.

The Dolphins are using GPS trackers on their players (which is better than house-arrest bracelets).

Patriots QB Ryan Mallett gets a chance to show he can play.

The Jets are picked third in the AFC East, at least by video game ratings.

Ravens WR Steve Smith’s admittedly nervous about his first game with a new team.

The Bengals have cap room to do another big deal this season, if they choose.

Browns S Tashaun Gipson is excited to play Saturday after avoiding a serious knee injury.

Steelers WR James Shaw has already played a full season this year.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien is stressing accountability in his first camp.

The Colts offensive line has something to prove in its early work.

Jaguars QB Chad Henne ran one play of read option, and that’s probably enough running for him.

Getting rid of Tyler Wilson creates more action for rookie QB Zach Mettenberger.

The stakes are sort of different tonight when the Broncos face the Seahawks.

The Chiefs plan to keep it simple on offense in the preseason.

The Raiders are looking for a TE willing to do the dirty work.

Chargers coach Mike McCoy is tight-lipped about who will and won’t play (that should foil the Cowboys).

The Cowboys enjoyed their scenic train ride to San Diego.

Giants RB Peyton Hillis will be sidelined “a little while.”

The Eagles haven’t made a transaction since May, which is remarkable.

There were differing viewpoints on the joint practices between the Redskins and Patriots.

The Bears might ease some of their veterans into things in the preseason.

The Lions are taking this going green thing to a new level.

The Packers mixed up their practice routine, cutting it three periods short.

The Vikings waived rookie TE A.C. Leonard.

Falcons coach Mike Smith didn’t see anything he was worried about in Hard Knocks.

The Panthers aren’t nailing down a timetable for RB Jonathan Stewart’s return.

Saints S Jairus Byrd is still easing back from back surgery.

Bucs coach Lovie Smith is impressing with his leadership.

The Cardinals could look to converted basketball player Darren Fells after Jake Ballard’s retirement.

Rams rookie Greg Reid is looking forward to playing his first game in three years.

The 49ers have more questions than they’d like about their offensive line.

What the Seahawks will be listening to prior to tonight’s game.

INJURY REPORT
The #Giants won’t have running back David Wilson this season, leaving them without a player who was slated for a sizable role in the offense if he was healthy this season.

As co-owner John Mara recently pointed out, the Giants planned for this eventuality but another significant injury could force them to scour the free agent market for more help at the position. That makes Peyton #Hillis‘ exit from Tuesday’s practice with a sprained ankle a bit more meaningful than an injury to a backup running back might be on other teams.
