También la lluvia and Yaku

Yaku. You'll remember that word if you have the chance to see the film También la lluvia (Even The Rain). As I usually do, I was flipping channels and stumbled on this interesting and beautiful film. It fascinated me all the way to the end, but it is not a film that moves fast. It's not done with a Hollywood flair. It has many moments of sheer brilliance and emotional beauty, but many uneasy scenes as well. Really, this film is about survival of a people. Water is at it's core, and without water, we perish. I talked about the importance of water in April quite a bit as I advocated for #worldwaterday2013  and boom, it shows up as a central theme in this movie. Complete serendipity.

I loved the music and pacing of this movie, all of the actors, and the film within a film. Though this was subtitled, I fell head first into the stories being played out. I'd recommend this to anyone who may be interested in the rights of indigenous peoples, and who are students of history in South America, especially that of Bolivia. Gael Garcia Bernal is always an actor worth watching and every supporting role in this film is done brilliantly as well. You will be surprised at how Luis Tosar transforms, and I think you'll see what I saw in some scenes: remarkable filmmaking.

Even the Rain (Spanish: También la lluvia) is a 2010 Spanish drama film directed by Icíar Bollaín about Mexican director Sebastián (Gael García Bernal) and executive producer Costa (Luis Tosar) who travel to Bolivia to shoot a film depicting Christopher Columbus’s conquest. Sebastián and Costa unexpectedly land themselves in a moral crisis when they and their crew arrive at Cochabamba, Bolivia, during the intensifying 2000 Cochabamba protests, which their key native actor Daniel (Juan Carlos Aduviri) persistently leads. The film was directed by Icíar Bollaín, based on a screenplay by Paul Laverty.

The film received nominations and won awards internationally, including an Ariel Award for Best Ibero-American Film and three Goya Awards, one of which was Best Original Score for the work of Alberto Iglesias. Additionally, the film was nominated as Spain’s entry for the 2011 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The Punished Lot - KQ adds the rate of Miraa freight to London twice in a month

Another blow to the Miraa industry as KQ sets
to hike its freight rate for commodity Miraa
Just as the country settles into the mindset of a reducing cost of living and thus more purchasing power for consumers as envisioned by our now in office Jubilee “digital team”, the exact opposite is facing us, the players in what is unofficially taunted as the fourth highest foreign exchange grosser for the country, Miraa, more popularly known internationally as Khat.
The only carrier of the commodity into the only remaining market where Miraa can be traded in Europe and indeed the rest of western and eastern world, KQ, has advised the exporters, by a circular to their forwarding agents at JKIA that it will be increasing the rate it charges for the carriage of the commodity into London by a whopping 10 cents of a US Dollar starting 1st May this year.
The offer for the industry is constant for a full year and only adds to make Miraa more expensive in the destination markets.
The airline’s timing cannot be better. KQ knows that the current Miraa carriage and handling contracts with clearing agents at JKIA will be expiring next month so the forwarders must bite the bullet if they wish their contracts to be renewed. She has further fragmented them so much they cannot even see eye to eye by making deliberate acts that have resulted in cut-throat competition amongst the forwarders, with some engaging in unethical activities bordering the absurd and criminality to gain a slice of the trade and sometimes edge out others. The first in these commissions was to give the rates directly to shippers thereby eroding the levels of markup that the agents can load onto the rate for their service. The incomes to the agents are thus so minimal it’s just for survival and a “name” that many of them are in the business. Most actually went in chasing the hitherto reputed huge markups enjoyed by agents in yester years but which are no more. Then, despite a very thorough Miraa forwarding contract catalogue, KQ moved to sign in agents without much of the infrastructure demanded in the catalogue like offices, secured go-downs, secured transport, security vetted workers, secured cold rooms and a detailed security system. These are literally briefcase agents with no overheads and therefore can offer any rate for a meager pay causing the entire Miraa forwarding business to be a jua kali kind of practice as opposed to the secured system that is demanded internationally. KQ has further aggravated matters for the agents by retaining others in the list of their service providers for this commodity despite them not delivering any Miraa cargo over long periods thereby encouraging brokers.
The exporters on the other hand have no alternative means of carriage so they too have no bargaining power.
What is angering the farmers and exporters is this blatant exploitation of this situation by the carrier and the fact that the increments have become an annual ritual in the last five years since KQ reopened the Miraa carriage service despite there being numerous times when the factors impacting the cost have drastically fallen but the benefit is retained by the carrier. While most other fresh produce is charged a merge USD1.50 per Kg for carriage on the same flight to London, Miraa is charged a premium rate of almost USD4.70 per Kg. Initially this was so that Miraa is accorded priority status thus guaranteed uplift because if it is offloaded it goes to waste otherwise it waits for the next day’s flight as there is no other carrier only to get to the market as  “barre” thereby sell at throw away prices or miss the connection to other destinations.
We feel that it is getting out of hand.
The airline cannot use only one commodity to rationalize her cargo revenue gaps. Further Miraa is the only fresh item being exported which has no high or low season rates which are accorded other fresh produce to attract cargo and encourage export. We would thus expect this attribute to level out the rate to one that is very reasonable as the airline is guaranteed full load all year round.
The woes of the farmers and exporters are worsened by the fact that London is the only legal market for Miraa in Europe after the Netherlands closed. All exporters must therefore scramble to make a sale in an over-supplied market as all the volume that was going into Netherlands must pass through London. Even if it is meant for transit, the situation has been made critical by the heightened surveillance by EUs border security making its transiting very difficult. Most of it is actually getting confiscated and destroyed by these border security and customs teams enroute to the Scandinavian countries resulting into unfathomable losses for the exporters and farmers because the exporters do not get their pay and thus cannot in turn pay the farmers.
The situation is further worsened by the oversupply from Meru especially at this peak season. Once mature and due for harvest the Miraa must be harvested lest it overgrows into waste and once harvested it must be sold and consumed within the shorted time possible. This must thus be taken by the exporters at whatever terms who in turn oversupply London. Currently the situation is so bad that the price of Miraa in London is actually cheaper than here in Nairobi meaning that so much of it is going unpaid for. This also means that most of the Miraa meant for transit is not making it and is ending up being dumped in London to cut losses. The only player in the industry who is making any money is KQ as freight charge must be paid in full ‘cash” before the flight.
The farmers too contend that despite the very huge margins that the airline has reaped from Miraa carriage in the last five years, it has not done anything in terms of social responsibility for the Meru area or Eastleigh or North Eastern where the main contributors into the Miraa business come from yet simple community needs like Miraa packing and preservation centres, dropping out of school due to lack of fees and lack of engagement for the youth, orphans, inadequate school facilities, disabled people, water and women issues remain concerns.
Our desire and what we are tirelessly working on now is for the agents, the farmers and exporters to speak with one voice to stop this tyranny by KQ while still sustaining the service.
Meanwhile the government on her part has advised the farmers and exporters to divest into other equally valuable crops and economic ventures but so far, they have not advised which ones these can be as Miraa farming has been replacing most of the viable crops in areas where it can grow as she settles and identifies approaches to confront the EU on its acts against Miraa.

Toxic Algal Blooms Pose Health Risks to Wildlife, Pets and People

While not all algal blooms produce toxins, those that do, like blue-green algae, can kill wildlife and family pets, and make people sick …

In a joint effort to guide state action on climate and water preparedness, American Rivers and the National Resources Defense Council recently published the Getting Climate Smart guide, which contains a variety of strategies to reduce runoff and sewer overflows that provide nutrients for algal blooms to thrive.
