If you had told me when I was 25 that at 50 I would be divorced and raising a daughter on my own I would have looked at you like you were nuts.

Max: Bloom, the two cardinal rules of being a Broadway producer are: One, never put your own money in the show.

Leo: And two?

LANE: (Screaming) Never put your own money in the show! Get it?

Leo: Got it.

Max: Good.

That scene from Mel Brooks's "The Producers," his hysterical movie about The Great White Way, illustrates that one does not become a Broadway producer to make money.  The majority of Broadway shows do not break even, let alone make any profits.

"The Lucky Guy" is an exception to that rule.  It sold over $7 million in tickets before its first night, easily making back its $3.6 million in up-front capitalization.  Even with Tom Hanks's weekly $75,000 salary and his 12.5% take of the weekly box office, this show seems like it will make its producers a significant amount of money.

And rightfully so.  I was blown back in my fourth row seat by some of the most incandescent and nuanced acting I've seen this season.  This is two-time Oscar-winning Hanks's Broadway debut.  He was nominated --  but ultimately did not receive -- a Tony for his performance.  He may feel that he's got something to prove, so he's bringing a level of intensity and focus that raises the game of the entire star-studded cast, which includes Courtney B. Vance, Maura Tierney, Christopher McDonald, Peter Gerety, Peter Scolari, and many, many more.

Nora Ephron, "Lucky Guy's" playwright and writer of blockbuster movies such as "Sleepless in Seattle," captures the fiery rise of Mike McAlary, a 1980s New York tabloid writer for the Daily News and New York Post.  Ephron started her own career as a reporter for the NY Post, and her love of the era of two-fisted journalism and its colourful journalists saturates every testosterone-soaked scene.

Ephron completed her script but passed away from cancer before opening night.  This backstory adds extraordinary poignance to the on-stage drama, which has Tom Hanks titular character dying of cancer on Christmas day.

The success of this production is entirely warranted.  It has some of the finest actors doing the finest acting on Broadway right now, doing a quintessentially New York story.  There are scenes so powerful that the entire theatre seems to be holding its breath.

This play includes a scene where a brutalized man in a hospital bed describes his rape by two police officers, which McAlary wrote about in the story that won him the Pulitzer Prize shortly before his death.  Be aware that this play does not flinch from explicit details and may not be appropriate for trauma survivors affected by trauma triggers.  I'm really NOT KIDDING about this.  This scene was so stark that a woman in front of me abruptly leapt up and sprinted out of the theatre.  I don't know her story, but I'm certain that she did not expect to come to the theatre to be triggered.  She was not warned, and there are no advisories in the play's advertising.  Please consider whether you or your companions need to be aware of trauma triggers before seeing this show.

This play's run has been extended to July 3rd.  Premium tickets are almost $400 right now (I'm grateful that I purchased mine long before they spiked).  "The Lucky Guy" may go down as one of those legendary productions that people will talk about decades later.  You probably already know if it's worth it to you.

Highly, highly recommended.

REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE... PICK UP THE PHONE! (1/2)
I was listening to a tribute to filmmaker and author Nora Ephron, who passed away last year. In an interview, she quipped, "I really miss my phone."
It seems we are always connected, maybe too connected. So what did she mean by that? Just that voice-to-voice on the phone is more efficient, more personal, and more meaningful.
I really identified with her examples. Let's take a look, shall we? (stay tuned for part 2)

1) When receiving an email or text of "How about lunch?", it can take a dozen messages to finally decide when and where. If you pick up the phone, you can be done in 30 seconds.
