I just posted a note on the design of NBC's Olympic Web site, with suggestions that they copy some of the user-interaction features from the BBC's Olympic Web site.

If you missed some events at the Olympics, nbcolympics.com is still showing full replays of all events. I have no idea for how long that will last.

NBC Can't Read an Opening Ceremonies Program
Also seems unclear on Abide With Me being about respect for the dead, 7/7 or not.

So, two things from this. Because I've learned even more from this interview than merely what Lazarus says.

1) This quote from NBC Sports Chairman Mark Lazarus (pg 2 of article):

"*On dealing with what NBC executives term as unfair criticism*:
The claim that we cut out a terrorism tribute during the Opening Ceremonies was wrong. That is just flat-out wrong. That was not a 7/7 [referring to the London bombings in 2005] tribute. [The London Games' artistic director] Danny Boyle did an interview with [NBC's] Meredith Viera afterward and in his words, the 27th of July was his father's birthday, the night of the opening ceremonies. He thought it was a nice idea to put pictures of people who had been working for the Games, or for people to send pictures of their loved ones who could not be part of it, and those pictures were shown on the screen with a hymn called "Abide With Me" [The official program is here]. In Danny's words and in all the meetings we had with him, we never knew those pictures would be up. He never told us that part. It wasn't relevant to what was going on the field of play. In his mind, it had nothing to do with 7/7. Somebody here made the leap that it was which is inaccurate. It then got to the States and someone said we had this terrible omission, which was not an omission. It was omission of the song "Abide With Me," but it was not an omission of what people said it was regarding the 7/7 attacks. If that had been the case of what it was, we might have treated it differently. We would have treated it differently.

This is the first time I've talked about it. We made a decision that with so much vitriol and hatred toward us that for us to come out and try to dispel that, there was no upside for us. So we just took it. Dozens of "real American journalists" picked up on that and berated us for something that was patently wrong -- and it is still getting written. Again, did we make some promotional miscues? Without a doubt. We don't like that and we are not proud of that. But for people to say we are doing some things intentionally, I mean, why would we do that?"
Endquote.

To which I'd say, read page 32 in the PDF below, realize that there was a hymn being sung - and then do the math. I'll let others draw their own conclusions from that. (And add to the fact that we got a tape delay'd version in the US so they could ask about the meaning before and during the editing process.)

2) The second page of the article links to this PDF of the Opening Ceremony Guide - and this is well worth saving on your computer:

http://www.london2012.com/mm/Document/Documents/Publications/01/30/43/40/OPENINGCEREMONYGUIDE_English.pdf

Not sure if this was a guide that the media had ahead of time - though I note that at least once I've seen "don't spoil X surprise" noted in it in bold text. If you look carefully through this guide you'll find a lot of the information that the NBC anchors babbled about. Kinda makes you wonder if you took all the audio files of the announcers and checked it to see if there would be any out side information that didn't come from this guide.

Oh and on the section where the NBC folk famously didn't know who Tim Berners-Lee was - this was the info in that PDF:

Page 30:
"frankie & june say... Thanks Tim

(on right sidebar under Cast:)  Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Dizzee Rascal – see biographies from p40"

and if you actually look at page 40???? Here it is:

"Sir Tim Berners-Lee
In 1989 Tim invented the World Wide Web while at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics. A graduate of Oxford University, he is a Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Director of the World Wide Web Consortium and the Web Foundation. In 2004 he was knighted and in 2007 he was awarded the Order of Merit."

NBC - not only can they not google ahead of time, they can't even read the program they were given.

Seriously, what is going on. It's not like tv personalities don't learn how to think on the fly. Unless they give up and get really lazy and don't read the information they're given before they go live. (These are people who learn to read teleprompters in which text can be changed right before broadcast. They're supposed to react quickly to things. And ad lib intelligently.)

Meanwhile I'm really enjoying that PDF Opening Guide. I wish I'd had it during the ceremony instead of the NBC commentary.
