IRVING — Dallas Cowboys third-year cornerback Morris Claiborne struggled last season and hasn’t inspired much faith since the club used the sixth overall pick to draft him in 2012 out of LSU.

Claiborne didn’t play this preseason because of a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder that he will have to take a pain-killing injection for before Sunday’s season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

So what gives the Cowboys’ confidence in Claiborne heading into the 2014 season?

“Well, he’s there,” Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said Thursday. “He’s our starting corner. That’s the confidence. He’s gotta go do it.”

That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for the first defensive player drafted in 2012.

Dallas Cowboys

2013 Record: 8-8
Pythagorean Wins: 8.2 (underperformed by 0.2 wins)
Record in Games Decided by Seven Points or Fewer: 5-5 (0.500)
2013 Strength of Schedule: 0.486 (13th-easiest schedule in NFL)
Estimated 2014 Strength of Schedule: 14th-hardest
Turnover Margin: plus-8 (ninth-best)

2014 Out-of-Division Schedule: AFC South, NFC West, vs. Saints, at Bears

The Cowboys finished 30th in defensive DVOA last year. That was with DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher, who left in free agency for Denver and Washington, respectively. They had 17 of Dallas’s 34 sacks. That was with Sean Lee, who is out for the season with a torn ACL. That was with Orlando Scandrick, who is suspended for the first four games. And their top defensive draft pick, defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, is on the IR-return list and won’t be around until Week 9 at the earliest. This, impossibly, is who the Cowboys are likely to start in their base defense against the 49ers in Week 1:

DE George Selvie
DT Nick Hayden
DT Henry Melton
DE Jeremy Mincey
LB Bruce Carter
LB Rolando McClain
LB Justin Durant
CB Brandon Carr
CB Morris Claiborne
S Barry Church
S J.J. Wilcox

That’s not just the worst starting defense in football. It’s miles away from anybody else’s D for the worst in football. Dallas almost definitely has the worst set of defensive linemen2 and the worst linebackers, along with one of the five worst secondaries. In an attempt to emulate the wild success enjoyed by the Cowboys offense, Dallas has created a leadership mire by demoting former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, replacing him with former defensive line coach Rod Marinelli. As a CFL player from the late ’60s, Kiffin might actually be better served starting on Dallas’s defensive line.

We always talk about whether a quarterback is good enough to take his team to the Super Bowl. This is the opposite. I can’t think of a quarterback good enough to take this defense to the Super Bowl. The various players the Cowboys have assembled here have a chance to be the worst defense of this generation. Defensive performance is far more random from year to year than offense is, so you could maybe piece together some random year when Marinelli revitalizes the defensive line and the Cowboys create some fluky amount of turnovers, but they recovered a league-high 67.6 percent of fumbles last year and still finished 30th in defensive DVOA. And that was with Ware, and Hatcher, and Lee …

Best-Case Scenario: Did you see that defensive depth chart?

Worst-Case Scenario: Jerry Jones blames a disastrous season on the Cowboys not drafting Johnny Manziel and trades a top-five pick to Cleveland to acquire him.

Cowboys

Sunday marks just the fifth time in franchise history the Cowboys will open the regular season after a winless preseason. They allowed at least 25 points in all four games – a good portion of that coming against backups. Their first offense scored 23 combined points during that stretch, highlighted by a touchdown strike between Tony Romo and Dez Bryant during the second preseason game.

Health appears to be on the Cowboys’ side as this Week 1 clash against San Francisco approaches – something that hasn’t often been the case in recent seasons. Romo is healthy after working through a limited schedule in training camp, and Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday that key defensive starters Morris Claiborne and Henry Melton should be ready for Sunday.

In 1960.
Landry was a first-year head coach of a first-year franchise trying to piece together a defense with discards from other teams. The Cowboys did not have a draft that year, so his defenders were plucked off the rosters of other teams in an expansion draft.

Their leading tackler, Jerry Tubbs, and leading sacker, John Gonzaga, both arrived in Dallas by way of San Francisco, and their leading interceptor, Tom Franckhauser, came by way of Los Angeles. The winless Cowboys allowed an average of 364 yards and 31 points per game that season.

On paper, the 2014 Dallas defense is the worst collection of talent by this franchise since 1960.
There were no stars in 1960. There are no stars in 2014.

All this does not bode well for Cowboys coach Jason Garrett. Landry had time to build. Garrett doesn’t. Landry was in the first year of his contract. Garrett is in the final year of his.
The Cowboys fielded the third-worst defense in NFL history last season and have since lost the most productive players off that unit: tackle Jason Hatcher (free agency), end DeMarcus Ware (salary cap casualty), linebacker Sean Lee (injury) and cornerback Orlando Scandrick (suspension).

This marks the first season since 2001 that the Cowboys have not had an incumbent Pro Bowler lining up on defense. And even then the Cowboys fielded proven commodities: Dexter Coakley, Leon Lett and Darren Woodson were all past Pro Bowlers and Greg Ellis a former first-round pick.

There has always been a great player either coming or going on the Dallas D. It was Hall of Famer Bob Lilly from 1961-74 and fellow Hall of Famer Randy White from 1975-87. Too Tall Jones and Everson Walls carried the Cowboys through 1989. Then Charles Haley and Darren Woodson both arrived in 1992, Deion Sanders in 1995, Roy Williams in 2002 and DeMarcus Ware from 2005 through 2013. This defense has never been short of stars.

The only two years the Dallas defense lacked any marquee names were 1990 and ’91, units Jimmy Johnson was assembling with youth. Ken Norton, Russell Maryland and Tony Tolbert were young players then on their way to Pro Bowl careers. They became mainstays of a unit that led the NFL in defense in 1992.

There is no Russell Maryland on this 2014 defense. There is no Lilly, Too Tall or Haley. Nor is there a Woodson or Cliff Harris. There isn’t even a Hollywood Henderson or Charlie Waters.
There’s only one first-round pick on this unit, cornerback Morris Claiborne, and he’s just keeping a seat warm until Scandrick returns from his suspension in October. Scandrick, by the way, was a fifth-rounder.

The biggest name on this unit is tackle Henry Melton, who has been to a Pro Bowl in his five-year career. But he missed the final 13 games of the 2013 season with the Chicago Bears and then didn’t take a snap -this summer in the preseason for the Cowboys.

That makes him a huge question mark heading into the season opener Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. The two starting ends,

Jeremy Mincey and George Selvie, have been cut a combined seven times in their careers.

Tackle Nick Hayden sat out a season before signing with the Cowboys as a street free agent in 2013. Safety Barry Church was undrafted. A couple of recent fourth-rounders, Anthony Hitchens and Kyle Wilber, could pencil in as starting linebackers.

Now, let’s go back to 2013. The Cowboys allowed 415 yards and 27 points per game on the way to a fourth consecutive playoff-less season. Hatcher led the unit in sacks, Lee in interceptions and Scandrick in passes defended. All are gone.

Are the Cowboys better without them? Can the Cowboys be better without them?

The renovated Dallas D allowed 116 points this summer in the preseason, second most in franchise history. And the Cowboys are again gobbling up the discards of other teams, adding three new defensive players over the weekend.

The shadow of 1960 looms over this unit.[ Picture below] might be just a little bit better as they went 0-11.

IRVING, Texas – Several key starters who missed the preseason were on the practice field Monday as the Cowboys began their game week preparation for San Francisco.

After missing all four preseason games, Henry Melton, Morris Claiborne and Terrell McClain all participated in the morning session. Being a Monday, it was only a light practice – helmet and shorts – but the trio of players went through team stretch and the full allotment of individual drills during the open session.

IRVING, Texas – The defensive line should get a boost the week of the opener.

Henry Melton, Terrell McClain and George Selvie have all dealt with injuries through much of training camp and the preseason, but head coach Jason Garrett expects those injured linemen to get a full week of practice before the regular season opener.

“We’re going to practice on Monday morning, and we anticipate those guys certainly to be involved in that practice, and hopefully they’ll be 100 percent ready to go,” Garrett said.

Also included in that list expected to practice next week is cornerback Morris Claiborne, who missed time throughout the preseason with knee and shoulder injuries. It’s that latter injury that continues to bother him.

When the Dallas Cowboys traded up to select Morris Claiborne at No. 6 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, owner Jerry Jones revealed that the LSU star was the organization's highest-graded cornerback since Deion Sanders in 1989.

Two years later, the organization is still waiting to see a healthy version of first-round investment.

Claiborne revealed Thursday night, via The Dallas Morning News, that he will need to take a pain-killing injection for a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder prior to the season opener.

But the breakup is still a hot topic of discussion to this day. Once again, it was dredged up in a lengthy ESPN.com article that profiled Jones, the Cowboys owner. Jones was asked why Johnson, who led the Cowboys to two Super Bowl titles in five seasons, has not been placed in the team’s Ring of Honor.

“Disloyalty … I couldn’t handle the disloyalty,”Jones told author Don Van Natta Jr. ”Whether it was right or not, by every measurement you can go, I had paid so many times a higher price to get to be there than he had paid, it was unbelievable.”

IRVING, Texas – One of Tyler Patmon’s biggest fans can’t be found in the stands.

Patmon’s got everyone’s attention after picking off two passes, including one for a touchdown, and forcing a fumble Saturday. But he already had the attention of fellow cornerback Morris Claiborne.

“As soon as he came in, he’s one of those guys that’s got that type of mentality, swagger about himself where when he walks in, he kind of (commands) that attention,” Claiborne said. “He goes out and he plays lights out. It goes from the practice field, from seeing him work and taking it on to practice and from practice to the games, it’s amazing.”
