April 7 is a day to take action, make a difference and help Miss Rhode Island 2008 Amy Diaz in her crusade to become Woman of the Year and raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Rhode Island (LLS) at Raffa Yoga in Cranston. Each year, in communities across the country, candidates engage in a spirited competition to earn the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Man & Woman of the Year” titles, by raising funds for blood cancer research. The candidates compete in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Every dollar counts as one vote and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of 10 weeks; the top local fundraisers in the country win the national titles. “Christine Raffa has generously donated her studio for a community class to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,” said Diaz. “I have been going to Raffa Yoga for a few years and I love the sense of community and caring from its members, instructors and Christine.” At the event, all levels of yoga students and those who want to be introduced to yoga are welcome to the Raffa Yoga Studios, located at 19 Sharpe Drive, for this $20 community class and all proceeds go to LLS. The slow flow class will last an hour and 15 minutes. Yoga instructor Pam Sammartino is donating her time to lead this class in honor of her young friend who is battling a blood cancer for the second time in her life. “Raffa Yoga embodies the spirit of giving, loving and caring for oneself and others and I couldn’t be happier or more grateful to be able to have a fundraiser at Raffa Yoga,” said Sammartino. Sammartino was thrilled when she found out that Raffa was involved in the efforts. “When I found out Raffa Yoga was sponsoring the event, it was the perfect fit. My young friend, 11-year-old Georgia Wettergren, has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) for the second time in her young life. Leading this class is a way to honor her strength and give back to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society,” said Sammartino. Diaz is hopeful that her efforts, and the work of Man and Woman of the Year candidates nationwide, will help make the prognosis better for children like Georgia. “It is with a true sense of honor that I have been nominated to run for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2013 Man & Woman of the Year,” Diaz said. “LLS’s continued advancements over the years are responsible for the blood cancer survival rate doubling and tripling; in some cases, the survival rate has even quadrupled, so today is the day to get involved.” Diaz believes that everything happens for a reason, and this experience is another example of that. “Last year, two of my good friends were diagnosed with blood cancers, and though I had never been involved with LLS, a couple of months after their diagnosis I was contacted and told the LLS nominating committee selected me to become involved with the campaign,” she said. “Call it fate, but at that moment I knew I was suppose to do something more, something tangible to help my friends, their families and the hundreds of thousands negatively affected my blood cancers.” Diaz has enlisted family, friends, business associates and the statewide community to help her win the title of Woman of the Year and further assist with her efforts to raise funds for LLS. She is also proud to announce that Style Newport is the official jeweler for her Woman of the Year Campaign. Diaz will be wearing her Style Newport bracelet, which has been designated as the official jeweler of the campaign. If someone purchases a Style Newport piece and mentions Amy Diaz, Style Newport will donate 10 percent of the proceeds toward Amy’s Woman of the Year campaign. Style Newport’s sterling silver and enamel nautical signal flags are manufactured locally. “Throughout the Man & Woman of the Year campaign, I am reaching out to family, friends and the extensive number of people I am connected with throughout my social media networks,” Diaz said. “I am raising money by accepting donations, stocks, business sponsorships, raffle and auction items, and selling tickets to the Grande Finale in May.” Fundraising events are planned to raise money in addition to the event at Raffa Yoga on April 7. Diaz will be at the Southern New England Women’s Expo at Twin River on April 14, a Networking event at Vanity on April 24 and she will be the Celebrity Bartender at Vanity on April 10 and April 30.
