The first third of the book discusses Michael’s life in the ghetto with his unreliable mother and the unsteady life he lived with his siblings and then in foster care. As Michael Oher had a difficult childhood, he learned to survive by forgetting or blocking out the tough times he endured, which is why his story is structured slightly disorganized as he takes a personal journey to piece together his past. However, through the descriptive events that Michael is able to remember, it is clear he was able to survive his early childhood by sticking with his siblings, as his mother was usually missing for several days getting high and never able to provide much for her children. The siblings would protect each other by having “little family meetings where [they] would go over the game plan for when the authorities came to take [them] away” when their mom had disappeared for a couple days. Eventually, they were all put into foster care where Michael became a “runner” who would run back to his mother’s house weekly where a couple of his other siblings would have ran to as well, all because the young, big-hearted Michael Oher, still wanted to be with the mother that left him out on the streets time and time again.
