West Bromwich Albion: Five positives steps the Baggies should take during the January transfer window

Barely a quarter of the way through the Premier League season and clubs are already considering their options ahead of the January transfer window. West Bromwich Albion will be no different as the Baggies attempt to build from a mid-table position during the remainder of the campaign. But what needs to be done at The Hawthorns during the first month of 2015 to ensure that it becomes a season of progress for Alan Irvine’s men? Brian Dick offers five suggestions for what Albion need to do in the January transfer window. Silvestre Varela 1) Bring in some width. Albion had a period of success playing a narrow four-man midfield but Newcastle and Crystal Palace have both stacked the central areas and forced them to go wide. Sebastien Pocognoli has shown himself willing to do this down the left but the right side lacks penetration. When he’s fit Silvestre Varela will help on one wing but the Baggies need another option so they can stretch the field. Matt Jarvis at West Ham, Wolves connections notwithstanding, or Atletico Madrid’s Cristian Rodriguez are two possible options. 2) Don’t panic and spend millions on another centre forward. For all the concerns about Brown Ideye [...]

Three Closely Orbiting Supermassive Black Holes May Reveal Gravitational Waves And Ripples In Spacetime http://b4in.org/g52M

The discovery of three closely orbiting supermassive black holes in a galaxy more than four billion light years away could help astronomers in the search for gravitational waves: the ‘ripples in spacetime’ predicted by Einstein.

An international team, including Oxford University scientists, led by Dr Roger Deane from the University of Cape Town, examined six systems thought to contain two supermassive black holes.

The team found that one of these contained three supermassive black holes – the tightest trio of black holes detected at such a large distance – with two of them orbiting each other rather like binary stars. The finding suggests that these closely-packed supermassive black holes are far more common than previously thought.

Dr Roger Deane from the University of Cape Town said: ‘What remains extraordinary to me is that these black holes, which are at the very extreme of Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity, are orbiting one another at 300 times the speed of sound on Earth. Not only that, but using the combined signals from radio telescopes on four continents we are able to observe this exotic system one third of the way across the Universe. It gives me great excitement as this is just scratching the surface of a long list of discoveries that will be made possible with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).’

Professor Matt Jarvis of Oxford University’s Department of Physics, an author of the paper, said: ‘General Relativity predicts that merging black holes are sources of gravitational waves and in this work we have managed to spot three black holes packed about as tightly together as they could be before spiraling into each other and merging.

The idea that we might be able to find more of these potential sources of gravitational waves is very encouraging as knowing where such signals should originate will help us try to detect these ‘ripples’ in spacetime as they warp the Universe.’

Two wins from four in league and of to a winning start in the Champions League is a plenty decent start on paper, but after the narrow victory over Ludogorets on Tuesday, Liverpool's early season narrative has become one of flirting with disaster rather than settling into the new season. The win over Spurs--a performance that saw the squad at nearly full strength for the first and only time this season--was a flash in the pan, more a productive of Spurs being Spurs than Liverpool being half-decent.

Which they are, and Spurs are most definitely Spurs, but anyone hoping for an instant return to the heights of last season will have no doubt been left disappointed. They're yet to click consistently, especially in central defense and up front, with a midfield that's looked disjointed in the absence of Joe Allen. So maybe just struggling with everything outside those two fullbacks in their early twenties, then. At any rate, six points from twelve leaves room for growth, and a win tomorrow would see them (relatively) back on track despite lingering injury concerns.

They'll have to earn it in a fixture that's been challenging in recent years despite wins in consecutive seasons under Brendan Rodgers. Sam Allardyce's West Ham side have played Liverpool very tight at Upton Park, and while their start to the season has been mixed--losses at home to Southampton and Spurs, a win away at Crystal Palace and a draw at Hull--we can likely expect more of the same tomorrow.

Andy Carroll, Kevin Nolan, Matt Jarvis, and Joey O'Brien will all miss out, but Alex Song could make his first start in a West Ham shirt after appearing as a substitute last weekend. In the draw at the KC Stadium, Allardyce went with Adrian in goal, Winston Reid, Aaron Cresswell, James Tomkins, and Guy Demel across the back, Cheikhou Kouyaté, Stewart Downing (featuring centrally for portions of the match), and Mark Noble in midfield, and Mauro Zarate getting forward to support Diafra Sakho and impressive newboy Enner Valencia up top.

For Liverpool:

Mignolet
Manquillo Skrtel Lovren Moreno
Gerrard
Henderson Coutinho
Sterling
Borini Balotelli

Not much news on the injury front, where only Martin Skrtel is expected to be available. Daniel Sturridge and Glen Johnson are back in training, with Sturridge expected for the Merseyside derby, while Joe Allen has been ruled out a further three weeks by Brendan Rodgers, Emre Can another five, and Jon Flanagan for three months with news yesterday that he needed corrective surgery for his knee injury. After missing midweek due to suspension, Lazar Markovic will be included once again.

Rodgers has some tricky work over the next few weeks, and with a number of longer-term absentees, balance is going to be crucial. At the back it looks like Skrtel will take his starting spot back, with one of Dejan Lovren or Mamadou Sakho making way. The manager's preference seems to be the newly-arrived Croatian, which sends Sakho back to the bench after three consecutive starts. Barring any late fitness worries, Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno should start at right- and left-back.

Steven Gerrard's rest will most certainly come on Tuesday when Middlesbrough visit, though with Joe Allen still out the captain might see minutes in the League Cup tie. Here he'll start again, with Jordan Henderson and one of Philippe Coutinho or Adam Lallana joining him. Neither were particularly great against Ludogorets, though at least for Lallana there's the fact that he's not yet up to speed. Coutinho's been woeful for most of the early season, but with Rodgers reaffirming his belief in the young Brazilian, I'd expect him to start with Raheem Sterling pushed central in a diamond midfield.

That's only possible if Rodgers decides Rickie Lambert or Fabio Borini is ready to join Mario Balotelli up top, of course. After his cameo midweek, though, it seems that Borini could prove himself prescient and get more playing time than anyone could have guessed when he fought for a chance to stay. Longshot that we get both Borini and Lambert and Balotelli on the bench, but hopefully Balotelli's picking up momentum after his goal on Tuesday and will get another tomorrow. If it's not Lambert or Borini, it should be similar to the lineups we saw against Villa and Ludogorets, with Sterling and Lallana flanking Balotelli in attack and Gerrard, Coutinho, and Henderson in the midfield.

Kickoff is set for 5:30PM BST/12:30PM EST, with Sky Sports 1 carrying coverage in the UK and NBC/NBC Sports Live Extra airing the match live in the US. Our coverage will start with the overnight open thread tonight and carry into the matchday post early tomorrow, which will have team sheets an hour before kickoff. West Ham United v Liverpool FC: team news and injury updates

Martin Skrtel returns to the Liverpool squad from a knee injury which has sidelined him for three matches – and he could be pitched in from the start alongside Dejan Lovren. Fellow defender Glen Johnson (thigh) is unlikely to be ready to come back while Jon Flanagan has undergone an operation on a troublesome knee. Midfielder Joe Allen has still not recovered from a knee injury sustained on international duty while Daniel Sturridge is edging closer to a return from a thigh strain, but boss Brendan Rodgers does not expect his to be fit for this weekend. The big question revolves around how Rodgers will lay out his midfield and attack. If he goes with a diamond formation, Fabio Borini – who delivered a bright cameo against Ludogorets – could get the nod to support Mario Balotelli. Philippe Coutinho, Lazar Markovic and Rickie Lambert are also pushing for a starting place. Possible team: Mignolet, Manquillo, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno, Gerrard, Henderson, Lallana, Sterling, Borini, Balotelli. The injuries are mounting up for Hammers boss Sam Allardyce. West Ham will still be without a host of names for the game at Upton Park, with Matt Jarvis (thigh), Andy Carroll (ankle), Kevin Nolan (shoulder) [...]
