Because I write in a number of different genres I know it is important to keep those genre's separated with pen names.  Recently I did an experiment with children's books. I created 3 simple, but colorful "baby counting books" from start to finish. They are part of a series for bilingual counting. The premise was simple and the formatting was a pain, but ultimately I got them completed and now have them up on Amazon.  I enrolled each book to KDP and scheduled a free day to see how that worked. The first free promo was done and I completely forgot about it until I checked my stats and found 60 downloads.  Now the other two books in the series need attention and I am currently running a free promo on one of these books for the next few days. One will overlap the other, but as of about 20 minutes ago the first book has now gotten to #1 in contemporary bilingual children's books which garners me the right to claim the book as a #1 best seller on Amazon.  This may not mean much in the grand scheme of things - but with this title on my book, it is far more likely there will be downloads in the future. Because each of these 3 books are part of the same series, I can also lump them together and use that status to sell more books.  The free promos may not initially sound like a great idea - why would you give away something you worked hard for? The answer is in the resulting days of that forgotten promo on the original book. After forgetting I had scheduled a free promo day - that specific book SOLD 3 copies within 2 weeks.  Now I know that doesn't sound like much - but those were the actual first sales for this book. The free promo is a cycle - you get downloads and possible reviews. Amazon boosts your status, you go back to normal, but your rankings are higher so your book is apt to be seen more, thus more people have the opportunity to buy, which then again raises your status.  It's a jumping off point to gather some interest. I have leveraged my Pinterest boards and community to gathering those downloads and often appeal to new and indie authors to join my group boards to pin their book covers. Getting those downloads can really help your ability to get seen. It's been a slow road for me - but then again - I' plan do be in this for the long haul.  There are may people out there selling you on getting books written by others, using PLR or Public Domain works, and telling you that you don't need to know how to write to be a best seller... this is true to a point. Eventually Amazon and other digital book sellers will find a way to weed out the weak and useless books.  My children's books may not be the most impressive, they may not be much more than picture books, but these kinds of books are exactly in the right genre because this is what is available in the libraries and book stores. Each picture and butterfly was created by my own hand - it may not look difficult, but for someone who isn't digital graphic savvy, it has been a challenge.  I know others may look down on this little series, but I'm proud of it. It took a lot more work than it looks and I hope these little books will eventually bring in revenue that will carry me through to the end of my days. This is the 8th wonder of the world - residual income, and the KDP program, for all it's faults, is one of the tools that will garner me that residual income in the future.  Thanks for reading.
