1992 Dream Team
Eleven future NBA Hall of Famers. The first American olympic team made up of NBA players. The greatest collection of basketball talent ever assembled. All of these statements are used to describe the 1992 United States Olympic basketball team. This team was known around the world as the dream team. The dream team was one of the most significant sport teams ever, for many reasons.
First this is the first olympic basketball team that allowed NBA players to compete. Before the rule change the USA used college players as the representatives. In the 1988 Olympics the United States placed 3rd in basketball. In the Olympics leading up to 1992 games other countries used players that were “pros” but they did not play in the NBA which is viewed as pro league. So the best from other countries were playing but the best from the United States were not. So this new ruling in 1989 allowed the best from every country to compete in the Olympics. It was a true competition between countries and it allowed the best of the best from across the world to come together and compete.
The next reason why this was a significant sport team is because of the fame and reach of these players fame and the impact that they had on the whole world. The team consisted of eleven future hall of fame players. The most famous of these were Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson. They started the basketball boom around the world during the 1992 Olympics. The dream team was so dominant and so fun to watch that it exposed the great game of basketball to many countries that if it weren't for the Olympics they would never be exposed to basketball. Many current NBA players from Europe, such as Dirk Nowitzki, Paul and Marc Gasol say that if it weren't for the dream team they would not have started playing basketball. Many were soccer players before they were basketball players. Also their impact extended away from basketball as well. For Magic Johnson this was the first time playing basketball since he retired due to contracting HIV. So for him it wasn't just about playing basketball but also to spread awareness about HIV/Aids. With him using this platform to show awareness it showed that, although HIV/Aids is a terrible disease, it isn't a death sentence.
This team was the most perfectly timed Olympic team in history. The new rule that allowed “pros” to play in the Olympics was perfectly timed for basketball. The Magic and bird era was winding down. Magic had been out of basketball for a year due to contracting HIV and Larry Bird was towards the end of his short career due to back problems. A changing of the guard has been in progress in the NBA for a couple years for Magic and Larry to the new kid on the block, Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan has taken the torch for these two greats and ran with it. In the 1992 Olympics this was never more evident. In stating this it was quite evident that it helped to spread the most popular brand in the world, and made it ever more famous. Michael Jordan is widely thought of as the best basketball player to ever play the game. The 1992 Olympics was the start of the world wide brand of Jordan. Jordan had been dominating the league for eight years before the Olympics, but in 1992 it became apparent that he was the best in the world. He was the best player on the gold medal team that won by an average of 44 points a game.
The 1992 Olympic “Dream Team” was the most dominate display of athletic achievement in Olympic history. Game one they beat Angola by 68 points. Game two they beat Croatia by 33 points. Game three they beat Germany by 43 point. Game four they won by 44 over Brazil. Spain lost to the dream team in game five by 41 points. Puerto Rico was the next victim and lost by 38. Lithuania lost by a whopping 51 and finally for the gold medal the “dream team” beat Croatia again this time by 32 points. This shear dominance is the epitome of a great team representing their county.
Eleven of the greatest players to play the game of basketball all on one team playing together. Eleven future hall of fame players, the best players to ever play the game, and some of the greatest coaches to ever coach equals, in my opinion, the best team ever assembled in any sport. Many might argue this point but I truly believe this to be the case. One of my favorite things to do is go back and watch documentary on this team and see clips of their greatness. I was born two years after these games but the greatness of this team was passed on and still amazes people. To this day many compare to other teams to the “Dream Team” but none has measured up to what they were.

Marc Gasol said his advice for Pau Gasol would be for him to go to San Antonio Spurs at this stage of his career.

"If I had to guess—not that I've talked to him about it—would be San Antonio," Marc Gasol said Monday when asked where he thought his brother would sign, per John Martin of ESPN 92.9 FM.

Mike Conley puts pressure on Grizzlies to pay him, sign FAs: Mike Conley sounds like a guy who wants to continue playing point guard for the Memphis Grizzlies but only if the front office is willing to do a couple of things this offseason. The first is to pay him. Conley, an unrestricted free agent this summer, has been vastly underpaid the last few seasons despite playing at an All-Star level. He’s probably deserving of a max contract, but do the Grizzlies think so? The second is to bring in some free agents. The Grizzlies are going to have the cap space to pursue free agents this summer, which they’re going to need after starting 28 different players this season because of injuries. Memphis made the playoffs but was an early exit after being swept by the San Antonio Spurs in four games. Aside from Conley, center Marc Gasol and forward Zach Randolph, the Grizzlies are lacking in star power. They’re going to need more to compete in the West next season. Conley: "That's going to be one of the deciding factors, if I believe they're going to (sign guys) or if #Sports #NBA

Marc Gasol thinks brother Pau should go to Spurs: Chicago Bulls center Pau Gasol will “very likely” opt out of his contract this summer and test the free-agent market. But where will he go? Surely some team out there could use a seven-footer with Gasol’s experience and ability. After all, he did average 16.5 points and 11 rebounds this season whilst being named an All-Star for the sixth time in his career. Gasol’s younger brother Marc, who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, said his advice for big bro would be to go play for the San Antonio Spurs. Marc Gasol was just asked about brother, Pau, and said his advice would be for him to go to San Antonio at this stage of his career. — Ronald Tillery (@CAGrizBeat) April 25, 2016 Gasol won two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers but a third would be possible with the Spurs, who almost always contend for a championship. And if Tim Duncan decides to retire, who better than Gasol to replace him? San Antonio is a prime destination for players at the end of their careers, so you have to think G #Sports #NBA

WATCH: Dave Joerger tears up during presser after sweep: It’s been a rather difficult season for the Memphis Grizzlies, and if you need proof of that, just look at coach Dave Joerger during the press conference following their game four loss to the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs swept Memphis out of the playoffs, and Joerger got emotional after the defeat when talking about his team. Nothing but respect for HC Dave Joerger pic.twitter.com/aeWa0NJGDp — NBA RETWEET (@RTNBA) April 24, 2016 “I can’t tell you enough how proud I am of every guy that is in that locker room and has come through that locker room,” a tearful Joerger told the media. “This season’s been hard. It’s been really hard. They could’ve quit. Could’ve quit, could’ve not made the playoffs. And every day they came out and they fought like crazy.” Between trades and injuries, Joerger used 28 different players to get Memphis to the playoffs, and they got there down the stretch without the injured Marc Gasol and Mike Conley, arguably the team’s two most important players.
