Born this day in Toronto, ON in 1902: Lionel Conacher,  Canada's most gifted and celebrated professional multi-sport athlete. As a football player Conacher was a member of the 1921 Grey Cup champion Toronto Argonauts. He went on to play baseball and was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team that won the International League championship in 1926. Only learning to skate at age 16, Lionel was a relatively weak hockey player. Nevertheless he won a Memorial Cup in 1920, and the Stanley Cup twice: with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1934 and the Montreal Maroons in 1935. He also won a variety of wrestling, boxing and lacrosse championships over his brief lifetime.

After finishing his career as a professional athlete he showed his prowess in politics, winning both seats at the provincial and federal level.

Conacher died tragically in Ottawa ON playing a game of recreational softball between MPs and members of the parliamentary press gallery. He hit a single, stretched it into a triple and died of a heart attack at third base. He was only 52.

Dear Supporter,

Can you guess which federal bureaucrat got a $100,000 bonus last year?

Well the federal government wants to keep you guessing. They’re planning to gut Bill C-461, a private member’s bill by Conservative MP Brent Rathgeber.

This bill gives Canadians the right to find out how much money senior federal bureaucrats make and what exactly they do when they’re at work.

In order to scrape the votes together to get this bill passed, Mr. Rathgeber agreed that his bill would only apply to federal staffers in job categories paying $188,000 a year or more.

Now the Harper government wants to raise the disclosure level to a minimum of $319,400. The high-priced bureaucrats in that salary range are entitled to bonuses of up to 39 per cent of their base pay: an extra $124,566, for a grand total of $443,966.

As it stands right now, none of us can find out what these federal employees are paid, or their bonuses.

Cities and provinces provide this information routinely: Ontario puts out its Sunshine List every year with the name of every government employee in the province making $100,000 or more.

Brent Rathgeber’s bill is currently before the House of Commons Committee on Ethics, Access to Information, and Privacy. The government says it plans to use its majority on the committee to raise the disclosure limit.

Can you phone or email the MPs on this committee? Tell them to stand up to the backroom operators in the government and support this bill. Tell them you want the disclosure limit lowered to $100,000, not raised to $319,400.

Here is the list of MPs on the committee:
Chair: Pierre-Luc Dusseault – NDP - Pierre-Luc.Dusseault@parl.gc.ca
Vice-chair: Scott Andrews – Liberal - scott.andrews@parl.gc.ca
Vice-chair: Patricia Davidson – Conservative - pat.davidson@parl.gc.ca
Charlie Angus – NDP - charlie.angus@parl.gc.ca
Charmaine Borg – NDP - Charmaine.Borg@parl.gc.ca
Alexandre Boulerice – NDP - Alexandre.Boulerice@parl.gc.ca
Brad Butt – Conservative - Brad.Butt@parl.gc.ca
Dean Del Mastro – Conservative - dean.delmastro@parl.gc.ca
Blaine Calkins – Conservative - blaine.calkins@parl.gc.ca
Earl Dreeshen – Conservative - earl.dreeshen@parl.gc.ca
John Carmichael – Conservative - John.Carmichael@parl.gc.ca
Colin Mayes – Conservative – colin.mayes@parl.gc.ca
Brent Rathgeber is one MP standing up for taxpayers. Let’s show him he’s not alone in this battle.

Thanks for all you do,
- Gregory, Shannon, Scott and the entire CTF team

So you do the crime but if you don't profit from it, you get to get away with it?

By this logic. this is no different than if a bank robber is unsuccessful and therefore does not alter the banks balance, then he should be able to go free.  Only if he succeeds in stealing should he be punished. Hey! I guess we do punish success!

The fact that the election fraud wasn't necessary to win, doesn't mean that the perpetrators were acting under that assumption. Their intention was to subvert democracy. The fact that these people did not have the confidence in themselves to win on their own merits but were wrong does not exempt them from punishment.
