Bruins lose in OT, 4-3. Series heads back to Boston for game 5

Well, that was pretty ugly. The Bruins let this one slip away, once agan losing a 3rd period lead, like they have far too many times this season. But I really didn't feel all that good about the game anyway, as there were too many give aways and too many of their "stars" taking the night off. As in the Toronto series, it seems like the more they talk about "bearing down", the less I see of it on the ice.

The offensive pressure was pretty good. There were just far too many defensive giveaways. I think Chara easily had his worst game of the playoffs, turning the puck over way too often. And Hamilton didn't look too good either, which is bad, because they often played together (I think - Coach Claude seems to juggle his defensive pairs more than most coaches). The Bruiins even had two power play goals, which is pretty remarkable, although I am pretty sure that Horton partially fanned on his goal. Krug's, on the other hand, was a bullet from the middle. Maybe it was tipped by a Ranger in front, but I don't think that mattered.

I though Jagr didnt play too well, and I especially hated the effort of both Horton and Lucic. I know Horton scored one of the goals, but he just never showed much drive. And Lucic did worst than take the day off - he just made so many brain dead passes I lost track of them. From drop passes to skaters who had long ago skated off, to long passes through 3 Ranger skaters, it made me crazy. He also just stood around far too often. I don't know how you can be on the ice and ever been seen just standing on your skates. But you watch Lucic and you see it far too often, especially in the defensive end.

I also wish the Bruins would stop just holding their sticks out when the Rangers are circling the net. They really need to get much more physical. I thought McQuaid and, especially, Johnny B played phsyical, but the forwards didn't. I'm not sure it is Krug or Bartkowski's game, but certainly Chara and Hamilton should have been hitting them more. I want them to be crosschecking the hell out of the players in their defensive end, as it just doesn't seem to be getting called.

Then Rask, who pretty much typified the Jekyll/Hyde of the Bruins tonight, let in one of the ugliest goals you'll ever see. He was sliding over and essentially tripped. I have had that happen to me, and there really is nothing you can do about it, and nothing that feels worse. The oddest thing about the goal was how he still could have stopped it by putting the paddle down on the ice yet he tried to push it away with the blade of the stick and missed it completely. That really turned the game around. While the Bruins hadn't really shown a whole bunch of fire, the Rangers (and their fans) were even flatter. I think they had 10 shots to that point, late in the second period.

The Bruin coaches talk a lot about "timely saves". Well, this was "badly timed goal", as it gave the Rangers life. And then when the puck got stolen from Charra and tucked in behind Rask (who should have recognized what was happening too and gotten over there), suddenly it was tied 2-2 and a whole new hockey game. Lundqvist was really solid, and the Rangers, while I woudln't call it "buzzing", where showing some signs of life.

Then Seguin finally scored, this time on the power play. He had a brilliant shot (unlike in the previous power play, when he kept burying the shot into Lundqvist's gut), and was foiled by an equally brilliant stop. But he stayed with it and buried the rebound, putting the Bruins up 3-2. But then they gave up a power play goal to the Rangers, which really hurt.

It went into overtime and the Bruins had a few solid chances, but I still wasn't feeling too good. Finally, the Rangers tipped a puck in from the high slot and we go back to Boston for game 5.

Like I said earlier, I'm not sure that is really a bad thing. I still think the Bruins showed they are the better team - two of those Ranger goals will just never happend again in the playoffs. They can just buckle down and get'er done in Boston, and still get plenty of rest. Let's just not go back to New York, shall we?

Bruins win 2-1 to take commanding 3-0 lead over Rangers

So the Bruins played another solid game on Tuesday night, beating the Rangers 2-1. It was actually a comeback win, as the Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd period when one of those crazy shots from the blue line went through a ton of traffic and into the net. Seems like those have been happening quite frequently in all the games of the playoffs.

But in general the Bruins were outplaying the Rangers the entire game and it really felt like only a matter of time before they went ahead. Kelly and Seguin both had clear breakaways in the first period but couldn't score. Not so surprising in Kelly's case, but really disappointing in Seguin's case. He has been snakebit so far in these playoffs and that would have been a nice way to break the schnide, but it didn't happen. As he made the break, I was screaming at the TV for Seguin to just finally do it! He made a nice move and would have scored had he lifted the puck just a little bit, but ended up just flipping the puck in the Lundqvist's pads.

Speaking of snakebit, Jagr too had a good look. He had a clear chance from the slot and also hit Lundqvist in the pads, as he was going 5 hole. Following up the shot, he tried to jam in it, but just didn't get a good piece of it. Hard to believe the Bruins are winning these games without so much as a single goal from either Seguin or Jagr.

The kids at the blue line again played very solid. Rookie blueliners Krug, Bartkowski and Hamilton haven't looked out of place at all and the big talk is who, if any, to sit down if and when Seidenberg at least comes back. I wonder if having such a big lead in the series might have the Bruins be extra cautious in bring Seidenberg back and just not rock the boat while things are going so well. All the talk has been on Krug, which is odd. He has played very well, and he was a premier college player, but if he was so good, why wasn't he playing for the Bruins earlier? Heck, why wasn't he even drafted out of college? I think his size remains a question, but his skating ability and his hockey sense certainly are first rate. The thinking is that Hamilton would be the first
to sit, but I'm not sure at all.

The game was also notable for the lack of penalty calls. Not that there weren't any penalties, just not ones that were called. The Rangers did get two power plays, but on silly interference calls. The refs seemed to let everything else go, including an obvious high stick to Chara's face that should have gone for 4 minutes. There was also a clear trip on Krejci and another play where Kelly dumped the puck down low and chased after it, only to have the Rangers D follow him very wide, grab his shoulder and spin him down. The only calls the refs made were two interference calls on the Bruins when sticks got to the belly of the player. Crazy. I guess the Rangers haven't had a penalty called on them in something like 8 periods of play.

But I think it actually plays into the Bruins strength, which is four forward lines they can really count on. Without many power plays for either team, they just roll out their four lines and wear down the other team. Tortarella admitted he shortened his bench in the game, but the Bruins never have to. And the Campbell line really showed why, as they had a +2 rating and Paille scored the winning goal, ably assisted by both Campbell and Thornton. When the Bruins roll four lines, and play aggressively, I don't think there is a team in the NHL that can beat them.

Certainly the Rangers aren't that team. I didn't watch much of their series against the Capitals, but they haven't shown me anything in this series. I agree with one of the NHL Network commentators that Tortarella seems to have lost this team. His acerbic postgame comments just can't go down well in the dressing room and I think it has been reflected in their play. No pressure up front, a porous D and a power play that makes the Bruins anemic man advantage look positively immense. Even Lundqvist hasn't been playing his best, although he was pretty sharp in game 3. It looks like he may be hurt though (his glove shoulder), so it really doesn't look good for the Rangers.

But I wonder if it is a good idea for the Bruins to win tonight. Yeah, as a Bruins fan, I know as well as anyone you want to close out any series as soon as you can, even if you are up 3-0. But I wonder if it is a good idea for them to sit around for another week and not play at all. In a perfect world, I think it would be best for them to clinch the next game at home. How about we aim for that? But I think the Bruins will take care of business tonight. They will score early and the Rangers will started polishing their golf clubs.
