Belgian GP: 15-place grid penalty for Hamilton

Nico Rosberg set fastest time in the opening practice session of the Belgian Grand Prix on Friday; the German was .730 of a second faster than second-place Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, who will take a 15-place drop at the Belgian GP as they replaced both the turbo and MGU-H.
The championship leader is running a new turbocharger and MGU-H this weekend, bringing his tally up to six for the season for both. The Brit will drop 15-places on the Belgian GP grid.
“The turbocharger used by Lewis Hamilton is the sixth new turbocharger for the 2015 Championship season and as this is not in conformity with Article 28.4a and 28.4b of the 2015 Formula One Sporting Regulations,” read Bauer’s report.
It added that the team also “informed the technical delegate about the MGU-H change on Tuesday.”
Hamilton refused to express any frustration.
“I don’t see it as team incompetence,” he said. “If I make a mistake or there’s a technical problem, we win and lose together.
“In terms of winning, that’s the goal, but it’s going to be very hard,” he added. “I’ll do everything I can. It’s about minimising the damage.”

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS — Nico Rosberg kicked off his Belgian Grand Prix in fine style, topping Lewis Hamilton by 0.7s and setting his fastest lap with the Halo on his car.
Rosberg was one of four drivers to test the Halo device in the morning and went out on the super-soft compound, the quickest tyre available this weekend. The 1:48.348 he set remained the benchmark for the rest of the session, with Hamilton finishing 0.7s down despite running his own super-soft lap without the Halo on his car.
Both Mercedes drivers started the session with new power units, meaning Hamilton has now used turbochargers and six MGU-Hs this year and will incur a 15-place grid penalty for Sunday’s race as a result. If Mercedes opts to use more components over the course of the weekend to stockpile them for the rest of the season, the grid penalty may still increase and force him to start from the back of the grid.
Rosberg was joined in the Halo test by Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz and Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg. Despite its rejection for next year, the FIA is determined to carry out extensive research of the Halo ahead of a planned implementation in 2018.
Kimi Raikkonen finished third, less than 0.1s down on Hamilton despite his fastest time being set on the soft compound. Sergio Perez was the surprise of the session, splitting the Ferrari drivers for fourth position, finishing half a second up on Sebastian Vettel. Hulkenberg looked pacey in the other Force India, finishing in sixth. Daniel Ricciardo finished seventh for Red Bull ahead of Williams driver Valtteri Bottas and teammate Max Verstappen. Red Bull will certainly hope to improve on seventh and ninth later in the weekend. Esteban Gutierrez rounded off the top ten despite several complaints about his brakes during the session.

Romain Grosjean finished 11th in the other Haas. The French driver appeared to be struggling with his car, running wide late in the session. Felipe Massa finished 12th for Williams, ahead of Marcus Ericsson, running a Sauber with a raft of new upgrades which the team has finally introduced after its recent takeover. Carlos Sainz finished 14th, splitting Ericsson and his Sauber teammate Felipe Nasr.
Manor new boy Esteban Ocon finished an impressive 16th in a session which saw him overshoot his pit box on entry. The Frenchman finished the session over a second clear of teammate Pascal Wehrlein, who set his time on a harder compound and finished behind Daniil Kvyat and Jenson Button in 19th in a frustrating morning for McLaren. Renault drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer took the next two positions, with the latter complaining of a loss of power in the second half of the session. Fernando Alonso’s morning lasted for just three laps, with a water leak curtailing his running — a disappointing start with Honda’s upgraded power unit and the fact the Spaniard came into the weekend hoping to spring a surprise on some of McLaren’s nearest rivals.

Rosberg quickest in FP1 as Alonso hits engine trouble

Nico Rosberg fastest in the timesheets during first free practice session for the Belgian Grand Prix, ahead of Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
The championship leader already on the back foot following Mercedes confirmed that he will take a 15-place grid penalty for Sunday’s race.
The first part of the session Rosberg tested the ‘Halo’ cockpit protection device, Nico Hulkenberg, Carlos Sainz Jr. and Daniel Ricciardo also lapped using the Halo in the early part of the session.
Fernando Alonso’s day was over after just three installation laps in FP1 for the Belgian Grand Prix as Honda’s upgraded power unit problems prevented any further running.
Honda F1 introduced a major power unit upgrade to the race at Spa and the spending seven development tokens on internal combustion engine, turbo and compressor upgrades.
Kimi Raikkonen set third fastest for Ferrari ahead of Force India’s Sergio Perez.
Sebastian Vettel was fifth in the second Ferrari ahead of the Red Bull duo of Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.
Nico Hulkenberg finished eighth in the second Force India ahead of Williams’ Valtteri Bottas, while Esteban Gutierrez made a strong start to the weekend to finish P10… more to follow

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium — The Halo cockpit protection device has been rolled out by four teams on the opening morning of practice for the Belgian Grand Prix.
Though it has been scrapped for next year, the device continues to be at the forefront of the FIA’s plans for 2018. Motorsport’s governing body wants every driver to sample the device, with further tests confirmed for Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez in Monza ahead of next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.
On Friday morning, Nico Rosberg (Mercedes), Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull), Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) and Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) took to the Spa circuit with the device bolted on their cars. Rosberg appeared to a lap close to full capacity at the end of his first run with the device, before pulling into the pits.
None of the drivers appeared to have any major problems negotiating the Eau Rouge corner, which sweeps uphill and over a blind crest. See pictures below for each car.

Belgian GP: Rosberg leads FP1 as Alonso hits trouble

Nico Rosberg set the pace in opening practice for the Belgian Grand Prix, leading a Mercedes 1-2 as Formula 1 returned to action after the summer break.
Rosberg and teammate Lewis Hamilton were the only drivers to use the supersoft tyres during the 90 minutes of running, the German finishing with a best time of 1:48.348.
Championship leader Hamilton, who looks set to start from the back of the grid, finished in second, albeit over seven tenths off his teammate’s best.
Kimi Raikkonen finished third for Ferrari, although the Finn set his best time with soft tyres, the same rubber used by Sergio Perez to go fourth quickest in the Force India.
Sebastian Vettel wound up fifth nearly 1.5 seconds off the pace.
The Red Bulls also had a low-key session, with Daniel Ricciardo down in sixth and teammate Max Verstappen in seventh ahead of the second Force India of Nico Hulkenberg.
They were followed by the Williams of Valtteri Bottas, with Haas’ Esteban Gutierrez completing the top 10.
Newcomer Esteban Ocon, in his first grand prix as a race driver with Manor, finished in a promising 16th position, a full second ahead of teammate Pascal Wehrlein.
Fernando Alonso’s day was over after just three installation laps, as the upgraded Honda engine introduced this weekend suffered problems that forced his mechanics to replace it.
The Spaniard failed to set a time and finished at the bottom of the times.
The running kicked off with all four Halo-fitted cars taking to the track for an installation lap, as Sainz, Ricciardo, Rosberg and Hulkenberg trialed the device.
Sergio Perez and Manor duo Pascal Wehrlein and new teammate Esteban Ocon were the first drivers to register times 15 minutes into the session, before Rosberg jumped to the top with a 1:49.481.
The German’s car was still fitted with the Halo, making it the first time the device has completed a timed lap in a GP session.
Rosberg returned to the track – still with Halo on and with supersoft tyres – some 10 minutes later to set a new benchmark of 1:48.348, a time that put him two seconds clear of his closest rival before Hamilton moved to second place, seven tenths off.
Ferrari duo Raikkonen and Vettel closed in after the halfway point of the session, but no one was getting close to Rosberg, the Finn nearly 0.8s off the pace and the German over 1.4s off.
Perez split the Ferraris later on, the Force India driver jumping up to fourth with a run on softs.
Meanwhile, Jolyon Palmer had to drive slowly back to the pits after reporting problems first with his brakes and then with the drive of his Renault.
The Briton did not return to the track and finished down in 20th.
With less than 20 minutes to go, Rosberg went for another run, but reported issues with his clutch, although they appear to fix themselves as the German continued with his run.

Verstappen already a crowd pleaser at ‘home’ race
--------------------------------------------

The situation has even been likened to Michael Schumacher’s popularity in his heyday, but in Verstappen’s case there is the added bonus that mother Sophie Kumpen is Belgian. It was a similar story recently at Hockenheim, further endorsing the view that it’s F1 heroes who keep boosting the sport’s popularity.

And with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton deciding to take a grid penalty here to even out the remainder of his season, Verstappen has high hopes of getting on the podium yet again on this super-fast track.
“Even though I haven’t driven here a lot, definitely I think this is the closest I can get to a home race,” the 18 year-old said yesterday. “I think there are also a lot of fans coming, so I’m definitely looking forward to that.”
Now that Red Bull have overtaken Ferrari in the world championship for constructors and are on a roll, they are keen to stay there and Verstappen believes that they can still do that even on a circuit where horsepower is hugely influential.
“I think the last few races have been very positive for us. We got the jump on them and now the most important thing is to stay ahead of course and try to close on Mercedes, even though I think that will be very hard. But we keep pushing, we keep developing and so far it has been very positive for us.
“I think here first of all we have to get the car working really well in terms of set-up and then we’ll see what happens.”
Of course, Verstappen will not be the only teenager on the grid this weekend. In an amusing media moment on Thursday he was asked – as an ‘old hand’ – what advice he would give to French rookie Esteban Ocon, who makes his race debut with Manor here.
“Just jump in the car and go out and drive as fast as you can,” was the simple reply, but he expanded: “I think in the end it doesn’t really matter where you come from as long as you do a good job. Once you’re in Formula One it’s up to yourself to show that you’re ready. I don’t think it has to be in F3 or GP3. Once you go to Formula One you have to show it.”
“I agree,” 19 year-old Ocon said. “Age is just a number in the end, you have to show that you are capable of driving in F1 and to show to the right people. I think that’s the most important thing. When you arrive in F1 then you have to deliver like Max did. That’s the target for me as well.”
Verstappen arrives in Belgium sitting sixth in the drivers’ championship on 115 points, just 18 behind third-placed team mate Daniel Ricciardo.

Hamilton gets 15-place penalty for now
--------------------------------------------

Mercedes has confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will take at least a 15-place grid penalty for the Belgian Grand Prix as the result of an engine change.
The German car manufacturer had come into the weekend thinking it likely that Hamilton will take a fresh power unit to ensure he has enough components to get through the remainder of the campaign.
The team had numerous options open to it to ensure the maximum return for any penalty, and it is understood to be considering further changes prior to qualifying.
For the start of first free practice at Spa-Francorchamps, Mercedes confirmed that both Rosberg and Hamilton would be fitted with new components.
Rosberg is still under the number of parts allowed for the campaign, but the change means that Hamilton has moved on to his sixth MGU-H and his sixth turbocharger – which will mean a 15-place grid penalty for now.
Mercedes could still make further engine changes ahead of qualifying to get more components into Hamilton’s pool, which could mean further grid penalties.
