Review: Katherine Jenkins at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Katherine Jenkins certainly has been busy since she last sang in Liverpool – sharing the ECHO arena stage with Il Divo. The Welsh songstress has been awarded an OBE, has got married (hubby Andrew Levitas is an American artist, actor and director) and has become an auntie. Now she’s back on the road with her tenth album in 10 years, and back in more intimate surroundings than cavernous arenas, here playing the Philharmonic Hall alongside regular collaborators the London Symphony Orchestra and conductor Anthony Inglis, with fellow Welsh singer John Owen-Jones along for the ride. I wrote the other week that Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro might just boast the friendliest tour on the circuit. But Jenkins is giving them a run for their money. David Munn Katherine Jenkins performing on 2nd March 2015 at The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall Just as one man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter, so some might find the lilting chatter between numbers a bit sweetly twee while others embrace it as sweetly charming. But it’s delivered warmheartedly, as are the numbers – a mixture of favourites from her decade-long career and songs from her new album. They include Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, Anthem from the musical Chess, rugby world cup song World in Union – set to Holst’s Thaxted melody from The Planets, and a Sanctus version of Elgar’s Nimrod. Elsewhere, The Thieving Magpie Overture is arguably too long for an orchestral opening – after all, the audience is there to see Jenkins, and one or two numbers are rather bland. Dreaming of the Days being one. Plus, personally, I’d move Barcelona, Jenkins and Owen-Jones’ thumpingly good version of the Freddie Mercury/Montserrat Caballé original, to the end of the second half for a grand finale with bells on. But in general the programme has been well-balanced, and Jenkins, wielding a sparkly mic and sporting four outfit changes during the evening, sings with richly rounded tone and real passion – particularly on numbers like Land of My Fathers, The Prayer and, perhaps her signature song, Time to Say Goodbye. David Munn John Owen-Jones Special Guest with Katherine Jenkins on 2nd March 2015 at The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall Talking of signature numbers, the drily amusing Owen-Jones, musical theatre royalty in his own right, brings out the big guns with full-on, no-holds-barred performances of Phantom’s Music of the Night and an intensely emoted Bring Him Home which shows just why he’s been voted Les Mis fans’ favourite Jean Valjean. And then there’s Conchita Wurst’s Eurovision winner Rise Like a Phoenix, Owen-Jones putting the power into power ballad on a song that should by rights be on a Bond soundtrack. With Barcelona done and dusted, Jenkins opts for another Freddie Mercury number, We Are the Champions, to round off the evening in radiant and happy fashion. Source: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/

Funeral music: The most popular songs revealed

The Coronation Street theme tune is among the top 20 songs being played at funerals across the country. Manchester City’s anthem Blue Moon is also a popular pick as is the theme to football highlights show Match of the Day, according to the UK’s largest funeral director. The Co-operative Funeralcare today released research based on more than 30,000 funerals and charts the tunes of choice being played at services to celebrate and remember the lives of loved ones. Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, by Eric Idle and From Monty Python’s 1979 film “Life of Brian”, came out as the most popular funeral song in the same year the comedy troupe acted in a series of reunion concerts. Hymns including The Lord is My Shepherd and Abide With Me also made the top five overall chart along with the much-loved golden oldie My Way, by Frank Sinatra. Blue Moon, a song associated strongly with Manchester City, ranked highly in the football league of mourners. But more popular is You’ll Never Walk Alone which has long-been adopted by fans of Liverpool and Celtic. Music from Downton Abbey and Strictly Come Dancing did appear in the TV Soap category for the first time, but more people are opting to play the Coronation Street theme at funerals. Reunion: Monty Python Overall Chart 1-10: Always Look on the Bright Side of Life – Eric Idle – From Monty Python’s 1979 film “Life of Brian” The Lord is My Shepherd (Psalm 23/Crimond) Abide with Me Match of the Day theme My Way – Frank Sinatra All Things Bright and Beautiful Angels – Robbie Williams Enigma Variations – Nimrod Elgar You’ll Never Walk Alone – Gerry and the Pacemakers (Adopted by fans of Liverpool FC, and Celtic) Cricket Theme / Soul Limbo – Test Match TV Theme / Booker T. & the MG’s The research also reveals Queen, with nine tracks requested including Who Wants to Live Forever and Don’t Stop Me Now, are the most popular group. While Elvis Presley is the most requested solo singer. Data shows how humour, anthems from the football terraces, film and TV scores and poignant pop songs are providing the soundtrack to people’s lives, making up 60 per cent of the ten most popular choices and ahead of many traditional hymns and classical compositions. Co-op Funeralcare operations director David Collingwood said more people are now personalising funerals. He added: “We think we may be seeing a generational shift in attitudes towards funerals, and the choice of music being requested. “Music plays such an important part in people’s lives that it now acts as the theme tune to their passing. “Modern funerals are very much about personal choice, which can be reflected in the choice of music, dress, coffin, flowers, hearses or memorials.” David said technology is bringing another significant change with almost one in five funeral homes highlighting the use of original music either penned by or performed by the deceased. He also said fewer songs are being refused on the grounds of taste. He added: “We provide families with a wide range of options and choices to help them to plan and create a fitting tribute, and to ensure that final wishes are fulfilled. “We will accommodate any individual request – no matter how unusual, providing it is legal and decent. “Lyrics provide poignant words as well as a reminder of a hobby, pastime or sense of humour – the variety of songs played at funerals today illustrates how more and more people are choosing to personalise funerals, and celebrate their loved one’s life with a fitting farewell.” The research also reveals that TV talent show winners fared well with Susan Boyle, One Direction and Sam Bailey all featuring in the lower reaches of the charts. Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera, and Lily Allen’s Christmas hit Somewhere Only We Know, both appear for the first time. A number of performers also have two or more tracks listed, including Coldplay’s Fix You and Paradise tracks, and Adele’s Someone Like You and Make You Feel My Love.
