Well +NFL  fans and +Green Bay Packers fans, I came up with a full Mock Draft for the Packers, but I don't have anywhere to publish it, so it's going to end up right here, on Google+.  Check it out!

---

After beginning and ending last season with twin losses to the San Francisco 49ers the Green Bay Packers have come to the conclusion that they need to be a tougher, more physical football team.  Consequently, in the draft this year the Green Bay Packers will be looking for big guys on both the offensive and defensive lines, as well as a running back to improve the running game.  After these needs, they will be looking for depth at various positions, including outside linebacker, and wide receiver.  Despite these needs, the Packers rarely deviate from the Best Player Available philosophy of general manager Ted Thompson.

Round 1, pick 26 overall - Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina:

The Packers biggest need is on the offensive line, as they surrendered 51 sacks, and struggled to run the ball (they ranked only 20th in rushing yards per game, and 22nd in yards per carry last year).  But, at this point in the first round, all of the top left tackles will be long gone, and the top guards are likely to already have been selected as well.  However, there is likely to be a variety of defensive linemen capable of making a difference.  Datone Jones, Johnathan Hankins and Jessie Williams are all projected to be picked in this area of the first round, but the selection here is Sylvester Williams.

Williams is a physically imposing defensive lineman with good short area speed.  He flashes strength and quickness to get by offensive linemen, and is a violent tackler when he gets his hands on a ball carrier.  If the Packer’s excellent coaching staff can improve his consistency, he could become a difference maker for the team going forward.  Williams will fit into Dom Capers’ base defense well as the third member defensive line alongside B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett.  He may even provide enough of a pass rush threat to line up next to Raji in Green Bay’s more common nickel defense.

Round 2, pick 55 overall, Trade to 49ers for picks 74 and 93 overall:

Here in the 2nd round, the Packers would like to address their other major need on the offensive line.  However value doesn’t meet the pick, so they trade back with the San Francisco 49ers, whose have a multitude of draft picks burning a hole in their pocket.  The 49ers move up and get an extra 2nd round pick to go along with the two they already have, while the Packers move out of the 2nd round, and pick up two picks in the 3rd.

Round 3, pick 74 overall - Kyle Long, T, Oregon:

After trading back to the early part of the 3rd round, the Packers find a potential Left Tackle to replace Marshall Newhouse.  Kyle Long only played a year of football at Oregon, but did a good job opening holes in the running game, and protecting the QB in the passing game.  Despite his lack of experience, he has NFL bloodlines as his brother Chris was the 2nd overall pick for the Rams in 2008, and his father, of course, is NFL Hall of Famer Howie Long.  Both Chris and Howie have referred to Kyle as the best athlete in the family.

Given all of that, you’d expect him to have been drafted higher, but there are a number of things that have hurt his draft stock.  First of all, he’s older than most draft prospects (he will turn 25 during the 2013 regular season), and he only chose to play football after failing to make grades and being cited for DUI as a baseball player at Florida State.  He also only played 12 games of major college football, starting just four (and those were at guard), and that lack of experience shows on film as he sometimes seems unsure of himself in space and doesn’t always play with natural bend despite having the athletic ability to do so.  The Packers will select him hoping that these issues can be corrected with coaching, and if they’re right, they’ll have stolen a starting caliber blindside protector here in the early 3rd round.

Round 3, pick 78 overall - Brian Schwenke, C, California:

Green Bay gives up their own 3rd and 4th round selections (88 and 122 overall) to St. Louis moving up to 78 overall.  After picking a a blind side protector for Aaron Rodgers, the Packers trade up with the St. Louis Rams to take someone to get him the ball, Cal center Brian Schwenke.  Schwenke has a wealth of experience, having started 36 games in his college career.  He is a technically sound player with great awareness, and his combine numbers (31 bench reps, 4.99 40, 7.31 cone drill) show he has the physical ability to be successful at the NFL level.

After losing Scott Wells to free agency, center was a big weakness for the Packers last year.  They signed Jeff Saturday as a replacement, but he clearly wasn’t the player he was earlier in his career in Indianapolis.  Towards the end of the the season he was replaced by Evan Deitrich-Smith.  The Packers are high on Deitrich-Smith, and he will get a chance to start, but the Packers have no other starting caliber interior offensive linemen on the roster.  That would change with the selection of Schwenke.  The Packers would hopefully get an upgrade at center, which would return Deitrich-Smith to his role as a swingman backing up all of the interior line positions.

Round 3, pick 93 overall, Trade to Arizona for 103 and 140 overall:

The Packers again trade down here to pick up an extra selection.  After giving up his 4th round pick to move up to take his center of the future, GM Ted Thompson trades back to pick up an additional selection.  Whoever he would’ve picked here at the bottom of the 3rd round will probably still be available at 103 at the top of the 4th round, so trading back to grab an extra choice at the top of the 5th round seems like a smart move at this point.

Round 4, pick 103 overall - Christine Michael, RB, Texas A&M:

Here at the top of the 4th round, the Packers address their need at running back.  This has been a position of need since Ryan Grant went down for the year with an ankle injury in 2010.  There have been short stretches where one back flashes talent, and seems prepared to carry the load (see James Starks at the end of 2010, Cedric Benson at the start of last year, and DaJuan Harris at the end of last year), but none of those guys turned into a quality long term starter.  Harris will be given that chance this year, but the Packers are too smart not to bring in additional competition.

Christine Michael had a phenomenal combine from a workout perspective, posting times of 4.54 in the 40, 4.02 in the 20 yard short shuttle, and 6.69 in the 3 cone drill to go along with 27 reps on the bench and a 43 inch vertical.  He did not have a phenomenal combine from a team meeting perspective, having overslept and missed two of them.  Michael runs with a low center of gravity and has a compact, muscular frame to withstand the beating of being an NFL running back.  He has the kind of power that allows him to run thru arm tackles.  He hasn’t shown an ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, and is occasionally a liability as a pass blocker.  His work in the passing game will improve with the coaching and increased emphasis on those skills he is likely to see as a pro.  His running ability will earn him a spot on game day rosters as a guy who can wear down a defense, and convert the 3rd and 1s the Packers have recently had difficulty converting on the ground.

Round 5, pick 140 overall - Shamarko Thomas, S, Syracuse:

At this point in the draft, the Packers have selected players to meet all of their urgent needs, and are just picking for talent and depth.  Here, they get a potential playmaker at a position where they have only young, unproven players.  Shamarko Thomas’ has a lot of similarities with Troy Polamalu.  He’s short for a safety, but has excellent speed, play recognition, and hits like a sledgehammer.  The major differences at this point are that Polamalu has great hands for making plays on the ball, while Thomas hasn’t shown that skill set.  Also, Polamalu went to high profile USC, while Thomas played at less prestigous Syracuse.

The Packers have only one safety they trust (Morgan Burnett), and have really missed Nick Collins since his career ending neck injury in week 2 of 2011.  By selecting Thoams, the Packers hope to regain some of that range and play making ability in the back end.  Thomas may be slightly undersized, but his play recognition, tenacious ferocity and undeniable speed allow him to get to receivers and ball carriers, and his strength and hitting ability let him make an impact once he arrives.  If he manages to reach his potential, Green Bay will have stolen a solid starter, and maybe even a potential Pro Bowler, here in the 5th round.

Round 5, 159 - Stansly Maponga, OLB, TCU:

The 2nd best player on the Packers is Clay Matthews, an outside linebacker.  The Packers 1st round pick last year was Nick Perry, an outside linebacker.  So why select an outside linebacker in the draft?  Because after those two guys, the only other guy who might be worthy of being on the field is last year’s undrafted rookie sensation Dezman Moses.  Despite the fact that Matthews is one of the best players in the league, and Perry looked promising before going down with an injury, the Packers need additional depth at this position.

Stansly Maponga provides that depth, with a quality skill set to be a capable fill in for one of the starters.  Maponga has long arms, good upper body strength, and a physicality about him that will allow him to play at the NFL level.  His biggest problem is consistency.  Green Bay will select him here in the 5th round, and turn him over to outside linebackers’ coach Kevin Greene, once a great outside linebacker in his own right.  Greene is a great coach, and will give Maponga every chance to turn into a consistent player on defense while contributing on special teams.  In time, he may even become a difference maker at the NFL level.  This would be a great situation for Maponga, and provide the Packers with the depth they need at outside linebacker.

Round 5, 167 - Kwame Geathers, DT Georgia:

The Packers only big bodies on their defensive line are B.J. Raji, and Ryan Pickett.  Raji is a young ascending player with star potential, but Picket is nearing the end of his career.  The Packers need to add more beef to their defensive line rotation, and with their compensatory selection they do so by selecting Kwame Geathers.

Geathers is a humongous human being, measuring 6’5” and 342lbs at the NFL Combine.  He carries the weight well, and can use his size, strength and power to immediately put offensive linemen on their heels.  At 35 1/4 inches he also has long arms, which he uses to lock out blockers before shedding them with his quick, active hands.  He can also use his arms to extend and wrap up ball carriers.  The knock on him is that he doesn’t always come off the ball low, which sometimes allows blockers to get into his pads, allowing them to push him off the ball or turn his shoulders.  He’s also inconsistent in the things he does well, due to his limited starting experience.  But here in the fifth round, Green Bay selects him for his massive size and potential, again trusting that their coaches will get the most out of this player.

Round 6, 193 overall - Aaron Mellette, WR, Elon:

With the retirement of Donald Driver and the departure of Greg Jennings to Minnesota, Green Bay lost two wide receivers this offseason.  While the Packers may still have the deepest receiving core in the league, they will look for another pass catcher with potential to contribute eventually.  Green Bay has acquired such a deep stable of receivers by consistently picking and hitting on receivers thru the draft, and they continue that trend here.

Aaron Mellette is a receiver who doesn’t wow with his measurables.  He’s a bigger receiver, but no goliath.  He’s fast, but he’s not a burner.  So what makes him worthy of a selection?  He has hands, agility, and route running ability.  Mellette has shown the ability to adjust to errant throws that are either too high, low, or too far behind him.  He’s always a threat to catch the ball, whether it’s a jump ball in traffic, a pass over his shoulder, or when he’s working back towards the quarterback.  He’s also a threat after the catch, having shown the ability to make a tackler miss.  With these abilities, Mellette will make the Packers deep receiving core even deeper.

Round 7, pick 232 overall - Kyle Juszczyk, FB, Harvard:

Fullback is often a forgotten position in today’s NFL, but having a good one is certainly better than having a bad one.  Green Bay currently has John Kuhn, who is a fan favorite, a versatile player, and a threat to get the ball as a runner or receiver when you don’t expect it.  However Kuhn isn’t a dominating blocker in the run game, is scheduled to be paid $2.5 million dollars, and isn’t quite worth that much for what he does.

Kyle Juszczyk played tight end at Harvard, but translates better as a fullback at the NFL level.  He wasn’t invited to the combine, but he did impress at the senior bowl, routinely decleating linebackers in run drills.  He also showed the soft hands, route running ability, and physicality after the catch that helped him set the all time receiving records (catches, yards, touchdowns) for tight ends at Harvard.  Juszczyk would improve Green Bay’s running game by being a better lead blocker, and would also be a capable replacement for Kuhn’s receiving and pass protection skills.  With everything he brings to the table, Juszczyk would become a fan favorite in Lambeau in no time.
