The ISS Progress 56 resupply spacecraft, packed with almost three tons of cargo, automatically docked to the International Space Station’s Pirs docking compartment at 11:31 p.m. EDT Wednesday, less than six hours after its launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

At the time of docking, the station was soaring 259 miles over the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of South America.

The Soyuz rocket carrying Progress 56 launched from Baikonur at 5:44 p.m. (3:44 a.m., Baikonur time) to send the cargo ship on its expedited, 4-orbit trek to the station.

The new Progress is loaded with 1,764 pounds of propellant, 48 pounds of oxygen, 57 pounds of air, 926 pounds of water and 2,910 pounds of spare parts, experiment hardware and other supplies for the Expedition 38 crew. Expedition 40 Flight Engineers Alexander Skvortsov and Max Suraev will open the hatch to Progress Thursday morning to begin unloading the cargo.

ATV launch tracking in Awarua, Southland, New Zealand

#iss   #ATV #georgeslemaître
On Tuesday, a couple of work colleagues and I traveled to Invercargill to visit the Awarua space reception facility. The facility has a few interesting projects going on (I'll talk about some of those separately), but in this case the item of interest is the European Space Agency (ESA) telemetry reception for the upcoming Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV-5) mission to the International Space Station (ISS). See http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Human_Spaceflight/ATV/ATV-5_loaded_and_locked for details - there is a lot of information out there about the mission.

This ATV-5 mission, dubbed Georges Lemaître, is the last of the ATV missions to the ISS. About an hour after launch from Kourou in French Guiana, and half way across the Tasman Sea, the Ariane 5 launch vehicle performs a Stage II burn. Shortly after it passes to the south of New Zealand the ATV-5 payload separates from the launcher. Both of these critical manoeuvres are tracked at Awarua tracking station.

The station was designed and built by Venture Southland (http://www.venturesouthland.co.nz/) in conjunction with the French Space Agency (CNES) for the European Space Agency in 2007. When this ATV-5 mission is complete, those components dedicated to ATV-5 will be dismantled and returned to Kourou.

Space technology seems like an unlikely activity for an organisation like Venture Southland, but in fact the organisation has done a very good job of developing and promoting technology for the benefit of people in the Southland region. Long may it continue!

We had a great day at Awarua, viewing the various technical bits and pieces being prepared for the ATV-5 mission. Hopefully, the mission itself will be carried out without problems.
