The reasons for their presence and the ensuing fight are unknown, but defending the unborn son of the Heir Apparent would be a good reason to have been posted. The only known survivors of the fight were Eddard himself and Howland Reed. Eddard recalls his sister dying "in a bed of blood," where he made her an unknown promise just before she died. 2.Also, while Robb, Sansa, Bran and Rickon are said to have Tully features (hair color, eyes), Jon and Arya are said to be closer in appearance (which had made Sansa believe Arya was also a bastard like Jon, until her mother put Sansa's theory down). I wanted to highlight this... Is anyone following Leigh Butler's A Read of Ice and Fire over at Tor.com? I wanted to highlight this particular chapter on the House of the Undying to show one of the major differences between the books and the show. In the books, the House of the Undying gave some prophecies to Daenerys as well as a look into things that are happening, have happened, or could have happened with regards to her life and to Westeros. I think this is also the first place where "song of ice and fire" was actually mentioned in the book. Contrast that with the scene in the show where Daenerys sees different visions, among them are Kings Landing covered in either snow or ash, and Khal Drogo with baby Rhaego. There is a much different tone between the two mediums.  The version in the book adds further mystery and intrigue to the story. For me, the "visions" in this scene solidified the whole "R + L = J" theory. And then there  is the whole Daenerys prophecies which is still unfolding today,  i.e. the whole "betrayed three times" thing. Anyways, there is a bunch of good stuff here. If you are reading the books, I highly recommend following this (mostly) weekly series at Tor.com. It is fun seeing someone unfamiliar with the story just get wrapped up in the details that a lot of us all know and love.
