TWEET: Companies move slowly, Microsoft does a new OS each year. It means Windows 8.x will NEVER be the #1 OS: http://bit.ly/YWseMy

I almost skipped this piece because the headline seemed so dumb. "Windows 8 won't hit critical mass in enterprises, Forrester says."

My first response was "Ya think?" It's obvious-- the gigantic bug fix known as Windows 8.1 is coming out this fall. Of course Win8 will never make #1 in market share.

The analysis under the headline is saying something considerably more meaningful. If Microsoft wants consumers and businesses to FULLY adopt each new operating system, they need to lengthen the time between releases.

According to the most recent numbers, Windows 7, (released in 2007) has dislodged Windows XP (released in 2001) as the operating system used by the largest number of people. XP dislodged Windows 95/NT, which came out in 1995.

Let me do the list of releases and dates:

Windows '95 and 98 were, needless to say, released in 1995 and 1998. Windows NT was released in three stages (1993, 1994 and then 1996). After that,

Windows 2000 and ME were released in 2000
Windows XP came out on October 25, 2001
Windows Vista was dropped on Hiroshima (and the rest of the world) on January 30, 2007
Windows 7 came out on July 22, 2009
Windows 8 came out on October 26, 2012

If you look at the versions (95/NT to XP to 7) that REALLY caught on, there was a six-year period between each release. There's not enough data to posit a trend, but if we assume that (a) people aren't interested in running another OS until six years have passed and (b) it takes six years for the new OS to rise to #1 in the rankings, then Microsoft is going WAAAAYYYY too fast for their market.

Except for XP, Microsoft has released new operating systems every 1-3 years. we can guess that Windows 9 will be out in 2015, Unless touch takes the world by storm-- gettimg uses to break the patten, the operating system that unseats Windows 7 will be Windows 9.

If you're only looking at the bottom line-- the new revenue that comes in when they do a new OS-- maybe it's worthwhile. Perhaps it's usueful to do a new OS every three years (as opposed to service packs) so you can get the new architecture out there faster.

But my perception is that people don't want to change operating system more than once a decade. And when every other release of an OS is perceived to be crummy, it gets even tougher to make them upgrade.
Windows 8 won't hit critical mass in enterprises, Forrester says
Windows 8, the most significant upgrade to Microsoft’s operating system since Windows 95 and one of the most important products in the company’s history, will not achieve enough adoption in enterprises to be considered a standard, according to Forrester Research. By the time the next major Windows upgrade is released, Windows 8 will be in less than 50 percent of workplace PCs, unable to overtake its predecessor Windows 7. “I have to believe M...

Yep, too much of one day to fit into two photo albums. This actually wraps up our stay in Hiroshima, finished on a high note. Towards the end of the day (And the album) we took the Shinkansen back to Osaka, and there are more photos I need to upload from when we get off, but for now...
First up is Hiroshima Castle (Reconstructed after the WW2 bombing), and the surrounding castle grounds. I don't need to say much about how awesome this is.
Next is Hiroshima Gardens, with "Happiness Bridge" where if you walk over it you will be happy for the rest of your life. Needless to say, I didn't walk over it. Nothing else needs to be said, just look at the photos.
After that is the sleek, sexy Shinkansen we took. Between these locations are some random snaps of the streets.
And that's it until next time.

From my Pinterest's DIANA'S ASTRONOMY.

Huge Asteroid Will Pass Earth on May 31, Similar to What Killed Dinosaurs; Near-Earth Objects Cause Alarm

The massive asteroid 1998 QE2 will pass Earth on May 31, 2013 with a size like the Golden Gate Bridge and similar strength which killed the dinosaurs long ago. Astronomers determine that the 1998 QE2 will not approach closer than 3.6 million miles, 15 times the distance between Earth and Moon. It is 1.7 miles long or similar to the size of the Golden Gate Bridge but will not be visible to the naked eye.According to NASA officials, the asteroid is nine times larger than a cruise ship. A telescope with a lens at least 230 feet wide is required to view the asteroid from Earth. It is also the former comet that passed little too close to the sun and the heat literally charred the celestial object."Asteroid 1998 QE2 will be an outstanding radar imaging target at Goldstone and Ario and we expect to obtain a series of high-resolution images that could reveal a wealth of surface features," said astronomer Lance Benner from the Goldstone radar observations of NASA Astronomers also assured that there will be no chance of a collision of 1998 QE2 to the Earth."This is a really big asteroid, similar in size to the one that killed off the dinosaurs, and it's getting very close to us. Fortunately, we've been tracking its orbit very carefully so we know with great certainty it won't hit us. We don't need to panic, but we do need to pay attention," said Amy Mianzer of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.NASA announced the plans of direct exploration of asteroids and other near-Earth objects by sending a robotic probe in 2016. The OSIRIS-Rex mission is now under development at the University of Arizona in partnership with Lockheed Martin and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre.Celestials Objects near EarthThe United States, European Union and other nations are closely scanning for Near-Earth Objects or NEOs using an effort called Spaceguard. There are 9,683 NEOs discovered as of February 2013 and most of these are asteroids. NEOs under the classification potentially hazardous asteroids or PHAs are about 1,360 and roughly correspond to at least 1 kilometre in size. Impact Rate of Celestial Objects Asteroids with a diameter of 4 meters or 13 feet hit the Earth once per year while asteroids having 7 meters in diameter hit the Earth every 5 years which contains as much energy as Little Boy or the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan or equivalent to 15 kilo tonnes.
