Wide receiver Greg Childs has continued working to return to the field after tearing both of his patellar tendons in both of his knees in August of 2012, but if he makes it back it will be with someone other than the Vikings.

The #Vikings announced Thursday that they have released #Childs and defensive tackle Letroy #Guion. Childs was a rookie when he suffered the dual knee injuries and suffered a previous patellar tendon injury while at Arkansas, leaving the former fourth-round pick with long odds of ever playing in an NFL game.

Mock i found i actually like this mock a lot

COACHING STAFF:

Head Coach: Jay Gruden
Offensive Coordinator: Ken Zampese
Defensive Coordinator: Jay Hayes

I think Jay Gruden is a good fit for Spielman and the Vikings. Spielman comes off as a old school, traditional type and Gruden is in the same mold. He is young, fiery and schematic guy. He will bring in a variant of the West Coast Offense (collective FF sigh) and will likely bring in a Bengals coordinator with traditional 4-3 ties. I've also felt for awhile that Spielman is going to hire a guy who can come in and develop a QB. Coupled with current Bengals QB coach Ken Zampese, Jay has done a remarkable job of developing Andy Dalton. On defense, Jay Hayes has also done a great job of developing talent like Carlos Dunlap, Michael Johnson, and Geno Atkins. Minnesota is going to need to retool their defensive line in the coming years and Hayes is the man to do it. Working under Mike Zimmer for so long, he will bring along traits and schemes that have made the Bengals so successful on defense over the last few years.

FREE AGENCY:

NOT RETAINED:
QB-Christian Ponder
QB-Josh Freeman
HB-Toby Gerhart
TE-John Carlson
WR-Jerome Simpson
DT-Letroy Guion
DT-Kevin Williams
DE-Jared Allen
LB-Desmond Bishop
LB-Marvin Mitchell
S-Mistral Raymond

RETAINED:
OL-Joe Berger: Versatile interior lineman
HB-Matt Asiata: Great special teams player with decent running ablility
DT-Fred Evans: Solid rotational lineman
DE-Everson Griffen: Stays for a starting opportunity (4YRS/20M)
CB-Marcus Sherels: Decent cover corner and great return man
CB-Chris Cook: Going to get a "prove it" deal in a new scheme

SIGNINGS:
Linval Joseph, NT, Giants: (5YR/35M) Jay Hayes' defense is going to need a true NT in order to work and we currently don't have one. Joseph has arguably been the Giants best defensive lineman this year. He can eat double teams, stop the run, and collapse the pocket. Sharrif Floyd will also benefit from playing next to a NT. Floyd has been at his best when he is at UT, with Kevin lined up at NT.

Stevie Brown, FS, Giants: (1YR/1M) Brown had a stellar 2012 campaign racking up 76 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and whopping 8 interceptions. Brown looked like it was going to roll over to 2013, racking up a INT and FF in the preseason before tearing his ACL. This is the type of free agents Spielman targets, he signs a one year "prove it" deal. The Giants would love him back but Will Hill and Ryan Mundy have played well this season, Brown should test the market.

2014 NFL Draft:

TRADE MIN sends #8 to STL for #13, #77
The Rams are pretty set on defense, after taking Jake Matthews at #2 the Rams move up to grab a playmaking WR. No excuses for Sam Bradford in 2014.

1. Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State

It appears as if Minnesota finally has a legitimate #1 corner in Xavier Rhodes. Rhodes will establish himself soon enough and teams are going to be weary of his side of the field. Minnesota currently doesn't have a corner who can hold up on the other side. Enter Darqueze Dennard. Dennard is a real physical defensive back who excels in off coverage. Unlike a Chris Cook, Dennard has the ball skills and awareness to make QB's pay for trying to force a ball. He gets his head turned around, diagnosing plays quickly and knocks away a lot of balls. Will come and immediately give Minnesota one of the better young secondaries in the NFL.

2. Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State

While the defensive needs some work this offseason, an offensive guy like Gruden can't resist a talent like Adams. Working in Cincinnati under Marvin Lewis, he knows how important it is to surround a young QB with weapons. Minnesota has a lot of #2's but doesn't have the #1 who can take over a game. Patterson is an exceptional talent but he has some ways to go as an actual receiver. DaVante Adams has that premiere WR talent in the mold of a Josh Gordon. Adams has nice size at 6'3'' and 212 pounds. He's an incredibly athletic player with very nice leaping ability and explosiveness on the outside, making him a strong threat in the red zone. He has big hands and does a great job using them to catch the ball rather than catching the ball with his body.

3. David Fales, QB, San Jose State

Fales has been my personal crush since last season. Jay Gruden is a perfect fit for David Fales. Gruden's scheme is going to spread out receivers and work out of timing routes. Lots of play action and quick hitting routes. Fales as a prospect is pretty similar to Andy Dalton. Average size, limited arm strength, and spread offense questions. However I think Fales is the best QB from head to toe, outside of Teddy Bridgewater. David is really technically polished. Has nice feet in the pocket, great pocket presence, and doesn't panic under pressure. His accuracy is probably his best attribute. Real good decision maker, with tremendous touch and accuracy on short to intermediate passes. For a young QB, Fales does a great job of going through his reads and finding open receivers. He is real smart at when to give his receivers a chance, when to throw the backshoulder or just a jump ball in single high. I also love a QB who is battle tested. Fales has gone through a lot of adversity to get to where he is. He started at Nevada, but realized he wasn't going to play behind Colin Kaepernick and transferred to JUCO. Then he went to Wyoming and realized he wasn't going to get a legitimate chance behind Brett Smith. Never doubting himself, he went back to JUCO before heading to San Jose State. I'm not saying Fales is a franchise QB but in the right system, I believe he will be an above average starter with room to grow.

3. Marcus Smith, DE, Louisville

Mike Zimmer added an interesting wrinkle to his defense after adding long time 3-4 LB James Harrison. Here is a great article explaining Zimmer's 3-3-5 defense.
Quote:
The key piece is James Harrison, who can line up as the right defensive end, or stand up as the strongside linebacker. Whatever he and Zimmer want at that particular moment.

This defense could be used against two-minute drills and hurry up offenses. Anything up tempo, usually with multiple receivers.

Now, Maualuga and Harrison may never have to leave the field (you might hate that sentence, but it's true). Zimmer can show both 4-2-5 looks and 3-3-5 looks - with the same personnel. Versatility, versatility, versatility. If you've been paying attention to training camp reports, you'll recall that Jay Gruden's new offense is based on versatility as well. Genius, right? The entire Bengals team can change based upon who they are playing. But, I'll get to Jay Gruden's offense in another article.

Marcus Smith is one of the few prospects in this class I think can be just as effective standing up as with his hands in the dirt. Smith has been one of my favorite prospects this year and I would be surprised to see him get first round consideration. He has great size and speed to pair with a strong set of instincts. He is quick to diagnose run vs. pass and is great at finding the ball carrier. He needs refinement in run support he is dangerous off of the edge. Smith is a great fit for the James Harrison role that Hayes will bring from Cincinnati. Can play out of the 3 point stance if that doesn't work out.

3. Yawin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut

A prototypical Mike Zimmer ILB. Smallwood isn't the fastest or quickest ILB but he is terrific at diagnosing plays and be technically sound. Very good read and react LB who can plug gaps in a hurry. Yawin is fairly decent in coverage as well. Smallwood will be allowed to flow to the football in this scheme, with Linval Jospeh and Sharrif Floyd being forces upfront. Should be a day one, 3 down player.

4. Jay Bromley, DT, Syracuse

Jay has some serious explosion to his game. He is real quick off of the line. Has a devastating bull to rip move that allows him to make a lot of plays in the backfield. Moves very well for his size and projects as a disruptive one gap UT at the next level. Minnesota needs to reload on the defensive line and Bromley will be a great rotational tackle with the potential to be much more.

5. Zach Fulton, OG, Tennessee

It's real difficult to scout a strong offensive line like an Alabama or Wisconsin but I feel Zach Fulton is the second best lineman on a dominant Tennessee offensive line. Fulton isn't the most mobile Guard but he is an overwhelming road grader who can be difficult to beat when he is square. Think prime Phil Loadholt as a guard. Fulton is an adequate pass protector but will need to develop that part of his game. He has handled his fair share of speed rushers in the SEC so it wouldn't  be too difficult of a transition. Just has to learn to play with better technique consistently.

6. Cassius Marsh, DE, UCLA

I see a lot of Brian Robison in Cassius Marsh. He is incredibly strong for a 4-3 DE like Robison and also possess a great blend of pass rush and run support. Marsh will often times split out to the 5 tech when Anthony Barr stands up, attacking between the tackle and guard. Has shown the ability to split double teams and should benefit from being a full time 6 end. I believe Marsh has starting potential and is another piece in rebuilding the defensive line.

7. LaDarius Perkins, HB, Mississippi State

As great as Adrian Peterson is, he is lacking in the receiving department. Peterson will obviously continue to be the franchise corner stone but Gruden needs a strong receiving back in order for his offense to work. Perkins is a real shifty and explosive runner. One of the best receiving backs I've ever seen. Has the speed and skills to score at any time. Poor man's Giovanni Bernard.

7. Maurice Couch, DT, Tennessee

Couch is a real talented defensive tackle but didn't get an opportunity to showcase it this season after being suspended for the year in the midst of a recruiting violations case. Couch is real strong at the point of attack and will likely play the one at the next level. Real strong run defender, though didn't face much double teams at Tennessee with Daniel McCullers there. Though he does flash pass rush ability, so he may get an opprutinity at the 3 tech.
