Hey gamers, what are everybody's thoughts on the Xbox One? http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xboxone/meet-xbox-one My two cents: As for the "snapping" window features, for me personally, I can see that being useful for quickly looking up game cheats (and that's about it). I don't really play music on my Xbox nor intend to. On the pure entertainment side, I use my current Xbox only for Netflix and footy games whenever ESPN3 actually hosts one. However, as somebody who does NOT have cable television, the TV mode looks highly appealing; however, I am a minority in this case, and for people who already subscribe to cable TV, that probably won't make much of a difference for their experience. As for the gaming side--as that's what the console should be primarily focused on, the games--I'm excited that the Xbox One has some powerful hardware. With 8GB RAM and an 8-core processor and thousands of more servers worldwide, I think we will see some amazing games coming out in the next ~5 years (but not at immediate release). I hate to admit it, but these specs are way better than my current gaming PC, haha! That makes it highly appealing for what's to come for games; I think Microsoft will enable developers to create incredible, persistent worlds. But the true creativity and imagination to harness this power in games has to come from the developers themselves, otherwise we'll see more and more shiny Call of Duty clones (which isn't necessarily bad, I just want some innovation). My biggest question / concern, however, is what this means for the Indi game developers. I use Microsoft XNA Game Studios for my personal game development and for teaching gamedev in the classroom. Will the Xbox One kill the IndiCade, or will it present something new and more exciting? That was one of the things I loved about the Xbox over other gaming platforms--it made it so easy for amateurs to build and sell their games. How will this change? As someone who has programmed for the Kinect, the new camera looks HIGHLY sophisticated. The unveiling video wasn't kidding when they said this is "NASA-level stuff." Again, how will amateur developers / hackers get their hands dirty with this? They haven't mentioned anything about the "IllumniRoom" yet, which is probably wise. Holograms will reach gaming eventually, just not sure if the Xbox One is the best route yet. But when it comes to cameras in the household, I always wonder about privacy issues (call me a conspiracy theorist but I can see the "national defense" agencies loving this mode of surveillance). I'll probably keep covering the new camera when not in use, just like I do with my current Kinect :P As for the Cloud feature, I can see that both being really annoying ("always online") but very convenient too, assuming it works flawlessly. For example, I HATED how I lost my old gaming content when my first Xbox360 died and I couldn't port my saved games onto the new hard drive (in the case of Dragon Age II, I couldn't port my saved game of Dragon Age: Origins over because it was on a different Xbox. Hopefully the Cloud will fix this issue and others like it!) Admittedly, as controversial / skeptical people may be about the new Xbox... this just made my E3 trip that much more exciting! Turns out ESPN3 was televising the game... well a quick Google search and voila, here' what happened. 1. downloaded WatchESPN on my iPad (could have been my iPhone as well) - Free app 2. open WatchESPN and enter my Verizon login -- since that is the service I have (others like U-verse are available) 3. turn on Apple TV (this is the best $99 device I have bought -- I've used it often to get online stuff on the big 60" LED) 4. hit Apple TV button on the ESPN3 stream on my iPad 5. Success! Full, and what looked like HD stream on the TV 6. So impressed the daughter, she had to take a pic with her iPhone and tweet out the situation to her friends.
