https://plus.google.com/101068829634970993266 Rob Rowald : AfterShokz Review: This will be a down and dirty type of review. It will be based in real world terms...
AfterShokz Review:
This will be a down and dirty type of review. It will be based in real world terms, not fancy marketing hype. Ready or not, here we go.

Bonus: You also get my impressions of the Aftershokz Sportz Wired headset as well. We reached out to Aftershokz and they were kind enough to send us a pair for review.

As background information: I workout a lot, I sweat profusely and I have shorted out at least a dozen headsets in my pursuit of sweat-proof earphones/headsets to use while I run, lift, and bike.
Well I found another great headset that I can recommend. These are a bit different than other ones I have tried in that they are an open ear, bone conduction type of headset. That means they sit on your cheekbones and send sound to your inner ear that way, not like traditional headsets that go in your ear. So without further rambling, I present the AfterShokz Bluez. http://www.aftershokz.com/AfterShokz-Bluez-Open-Ear-Bluetooth-Headphones-p/as330.htm

If you are unfamiliar Aftershockz, I can say I’m not that surprised. I happened on them thanks to a good old fashioned Google search.I was looking for bone conductive headsets. I knew they were out there but hadn’t ever found any Bluetooth ones before. Anyone who knows me knows I HATE, and yes that is a strong word, but I absolutely hate wired headsets and earphones when I exercise. My gorilla arms tend to fail about and get tangled up in the wires and rip things off my noggin. I was happy to find that someone had stepped up and created a Bluetooth BCH and couldn’t wait to try them out.

Good:

Price:
The Bluez MSRP is about $120 but a quick search of amazon and they can be yours for around $79. Not too outrageous for a Bluetooth stereo headset of decent quality. Great if you consider that bone conductive sets are usually higher than this when wired. The Sportz M2 MSRP is 79.95 but a quick look on amazon shows them as low as $34.

Comfort:
I cannot stress this point, enough. Because they do not go in your ears, but rather sit on your cheek bones, they are super comfortable. I wore them for about 10 hours the first day I had them. I almost forgot they were there, except for the constant rhythm I had in my head. This is true of both sets. You barely notice them.

Fit:
The Bluez and Sportz fit like, most other wrap behind headsets, but are most similar to the Motorola S9/S10 headsets, in the fit department. I know some of you out there are going to be like, “But I really workout hard/Fast/violently/whatever…” Yeah I do too. I do 60-75 minutes of cross-fit style training followed by 60-90 minutes of trail/road running. In the course of my workout my head gets flung into many different positions, sometimes with a fair amount of force. Guess what, they stay in place just fine. They fit securely in front of your ears and the Bluez have a band in the back that helps keep the tension on them. They have stayed in place so far for me, in excess of 100 hours of workout time so far. The tension strap is adjustable so if you don’t feel it’s right you can play with it to get the fit where you want it.

Sound Quality:
If you’re looking for a headset that can be an audiophile’s wet dream, I’m going to ask you to kindly move along, as these are not the headphones you are looking for.  OK are those guys gone? Good. The rest of you out there who are looking for a headset that has great audio, phone capabilities, and decent battery life, I’m talking to you. I was surprised by the sound quality of the Bluez and the Sportz. I had tried bone conducting headsets a few years back and was underwhelmed by them. The Bluez do a great job of reproducing the sounds that you would normally have going into your ears. The bass was bassy, the mids and highs were there and represented well. If you have them cranked all the way up you can hear the music coming out of them from a distance, but if you set them down on a hard surface they will shake and rattle all over the place, letting you know it’s not sound but vibration that you are hearing. The Sportz Don’t seem to reproduce bass as well but the mids and treble were better than the Bluez. As far as call quality I have made a few calls with them and people say they can hear me nice and clearly and I can hear them very well too. So they actually do perform as a phone headset.

Old School Charm:
In a world of capacitive, touch sensitive, and rubberized push buttons the Bluez and Sportz have an old school on/off switch and a physical rocker switch for volume/track selection. There is just something about the “click” of an on/off switch that I find so appealing. Unlike the Motorola S9/S10 headsets where you had to hold a rubber nub down to turn them on or off and hope you hit the button right, there is no mistaking whether these are on or off

Packaging/Accessories:
When most companies are trying to give you as little as possible when you buy their products, it’s refreshing to see one going a bit better. Both the Bluez and Sportz are packaged well in a nice box. Inside that box is a rigid carrying case, a charging cable, a warranty card, a quick start guide, a multi lingual instruction sheet and the tension band for the Bluez. Unlike some of the other brands that give you throw away packaging and the headset, it’s nice to get the carrying case included. That being said, I’ll probably never use it.

Controls:
Like the power and volume buttons the call and music controls are physical buttons as well. They work as intended and are easy to use. To answer or make a call you press the button on the left “ear” piece (when you are wearing them) to play/pause your music you press the right “ear” piece. Dead simple.

Battery:
They claim a 6 hour battery life. I was able to get almost 10 hours out of them the first day I had them. The first couple of hours were at about 90% volume, while the rest was at 50% or a little below. I’m not sure what volume they have their number spec’ed for but your mileage may vary.

Warranty:
They come with a 2 year warranty, that covers defects in workmanship and sweat damage.

Neutral:

Sound Quality:
I know I just said this was in the good column, but there is something I need to tell you about that is neither Good nor Bad when it come to the sound quality. Remember these are an Open Ear style headset. That means you can still hear outside sounds/noise when you use them. For me this is a good thing, I often run along roads and busy streets, and being able to hear approaching traffic is always good. While I enjoy the solitude that my in ear headsets give me, the safety factor is a welcome change. On a side note, I was running on the trails this week with them and it was weird. I was running along with my running game “Zombies, Run!” and being able to hear the birds and other sounds of the forest added another dimension to the game. It made it more immersive to be running along with my music and the in game audio being layered with the sounds of nature. It made me feel more like “Runner5” than I ever had before, but back on track. If you are not used to being able to hear outside sounds it will be a new experience for you; one you may or may not enjoy.

Wired (Sportz):
For some people this will be a plus for some it will be a minus so I’ll leave it here. The Sportz are wired. I am not a fan of wired sets as I tend to get caught up in them, but other friends of mine are pro wired because they don’t drain your battery as fast as BT and generally produce better sound. The cord on these is sufficiently long and the microphone /battery pack breaks the length up without leaving either end too short. There is also an extension cable that comes with the Sportz, but it is only a few inches long.

BAD:

Comfort:
Again, I know I just said this was in the good column, just hear me out. If you remember, earlier I said I wore them for about 10 hours. I had no discomfort during that time. It was when I took them off that I noticed it. After being on my head for that long I had a weird tingling sensation on my face (no doubt from being shook all day) and I noticed a sense of relief when I took them off. Because the put pressure on your face, it apparently build up after a while. Like I said I only noticed it after taking them off.

USB Flap:
In order to maintain the Water resistance/Sweat Proof-ness they have a small flap that covers the usb port. It’s made of plastic and is held in place by a flimsy little, for lack of a better word, tether. I would have rather seen a rubber plug style door that is welded to the plastic than what they are using. It has been ok so far but we will see how it holds up.

Conclusion:

There are no bones about it, well excluding your cheek and inner ear bones (you do know you have bones in your ears right?), the Aftershokz Bluez and Sportz are a good buy. Even if you have to pay full retail price, yeah who does that. They have performed well for me so far and the Bluez will most likely become my daily driver for working out and running, assuming I don’t prove the sweat-proof claims inaccurate.

AFTERSHOKZ BLUEZ 2 REVIEW

As always this will be a down and dirty type of review. It will be based in real world terms, not fancy marketing hype. Ready or not, here we go.

Common background information: I workout a lot, I sweat profusely and I have shorted out at least two dozen headsets in my pursuit of sweat-proof earphones/headsets to use while I run, lift, and bike. If you have read my previous reviews, you will remember that I have reviewed other Aftershockz products . Well my friends at Aftershokz have graciously provided me with a pair of their newest headset to torture. I am happy to say that, I have found another great headset that I can recommend. Like their predecessor these are a bit different than standard headsets/earphones in that they are an open ear, bone conduction type of headset. That means they sit on your cheekbones and send sound to your inner ear, not like traditional headsets that go in your ear. So without further rambling, I present the AfterShokz Bluez 2. http://www.aftershokz.com/product/bluez-2/

If you are unfamiliar Aftershockz, I can say I’m not that surprised. Though I expect that to change now that they can be found in Apple stores and other brick and mortar establishemnts. When I first came across Aftershokz, I was looking for bone conductive headsets. I knew they were out there but hadn’t ever found any Bluetooth ones before. Anyone who knows me knows I HATE, and yes that is a strong word, but I absolutely hate wired headsets and earphones when I exercise. My gorilla arms tend to flail about and get tangled up in the wires and rip things off my noggin. I was happy to find that someone had stepped up and created a Bluetooth BCH and couldn’t wait to try them out.

Good:

Price: The Bluez 2 MSRP is $99 but I imagine that street price will vary a bit once they are publicly available. The price point is not too outrageous for a Bluetooth stereo headset of decent quality. It’s great when you take into consideration, that bone conductive sets are usually higher than this when wired.

Comfort: As with the other Aftershokz review, I cannot stress this point, enough, because they do not go in your ears, but rather sit on your cheek bones, they are extremely comfortable. I wore them for about 8 hours the first day I had them, and just like the previous model, I almost forgot they were there, except for the constant rhythm I had in my head.

Fit: The Bluez 2 fit like, most other wrap behind headsets, but are most similar to the Motorola S10/S11 headsets, in the fit department. If you’re worried about them falling off while you workout, don’t. They fit securely in front of your ears and have a band in the back that helps keep the tension on them. They have stayed in place so far for me, in excess of 8 hours of workout time so far. A small change from the original is that the tension strap is not adjustable. So far that has not been an issue because it fits snugly and has some stretch to it.

Sound Quality: If you’re looking for a headset that can be an audiophile’s wet dream, I’m going to ask you to kindly move along, as these are not the headphones you are looking for (Jedi mind trick active).  OK are those guys gone? Good. OK, for the rest of you out there who are looking for a headset that has great audio, phone capabilities, and decent battery life, I’m talking to you. I was surprised by the sound quality of the Bluez 2, even compared to the originals which were good. I had tried bone conducting headsets a few years back and was, let’s just say, underwhelmed by them. The Bluez 2 do a great job of reproducing the sounds that you would normally have going into your ears. The bass was bassy but not overbearing, the mids and highs were there and represented well. If you have them cranked all the way up you can hear the music coming out of them from a distance, but if you set them down on a hard surface they will shake and rattle all over the place, letting you know it’s not sound but vibration that you are hearing. They have implemented a new feature called “Leak Slayer” which helps cut down on audio leakage, which was an issue for the originals. As far as call quality I have made a few calls with them and people say they can hear me nice and clearly and I can hear them very well too. The Bluez 2 have an additional microphone for noise reduction, and it appears to work as advertised So they actually do perform very well as a phone headset.

Packaging/Accessories: when most companies are trying to give you as little as possible when you buy their products, it’s refreshing to see one going a bit better. The Bluez 2 are packaged well in a nice box. Inside that box is a soft carrying case, a charging cable, a warranty card, a quick start guide, a multi lingual instruction sheet and the tension band. Unlike some of the other brands that give you throw away packaging and the headset, it’s nice to get the carrying case included. That being said, I’ll never use it. I never used the rigid case that came with the Bluez.

Controls: The power, volume, and multifunction buttons are rubber coated/booted physical buttons. They work as intended and are easy to use. To answer a call you press the multifunction button on the left “ear” piece (when you are wearing them), this will pause any media you have running. To end the call you press the button again. To make a call a double press of the button gets you into the dialog for that. To play/pause your music you single press the multifunction button. Dead simple.

Battery: They claim a 6 hour battery life. I was able to get almost 8 hours out of them the first day I had them. The first couple of hours were at about 90% volume, while the rest was at 50% or a little below. I’m not sure what volume they have their number spec’ed for but, as always,  your mileage may vary.

Warranty: They come with a 2 year warranty, that covers defects in workmanship and sweat damage. As a side note, they truly stand behind their products. I destroyed 12 pairs of the originals with my overactive sweat glands. They happily replaced them no questions, no qualms. They even interviewed me about my experience with their customer service http://www.aftershokz.com/2014/03/20/aftershokz-customer-spotlight-rob-rowald/.
This is a company that I can say honestly really cares about their customers. The customer service staff that I have worked with have all been great. Always courteous, always genuine, and always eager to help me get my issue resolved.

 Neutral:

Sound Quality: I know I just said this was in the good column, but there is something I need to tell you about that is neither Good nor Bad when it come to the sound quality. Remember these are an Open Ear style headset. That means you can still hear outside sounds/noise when you use them. For me this is a good thing, I often run along roads and busy streets, and being able to hear approaching traffic is always good. While I enjoy the solitude that my in ear headsets give me, the safety factor takes precedence when running outside. Being able to hear ambient noises can be a strange experience at first, but you’ll adjust quickly.

BAD:

Comfort: Again, I know I just said this was in the good column, just hear me out.I had no discomfort with the Bluez2 but the following goes out to anyone who is new to bone conduction headsets. You will likely have no discomfort while wearing/using the Bluez2. You may notice a strange sensation when you take them off. After being on your head for a long time, you may notice a weird tingling sensation on your face (no doubt from being shook all day) and you will likely notice a sense of relief when you take them off. Because they put pressure on your face, it apparently build up after a while. Like I said I only noticed it after taking them off and only the first few times I wore them.

USB Flap: In order to maintain the Water resistance/Sweat Proof-ness they have a small flap that covers the usb port. It’s made of plastic and is held in place by a flimsy little, for lack of a better word, tether. I would have rather seen a rubber plug style door that is welded to the plastic than what they are using. It has been ok so far but we will see how it holds up. The original Bluez had the same type of connector and it was surprisingly resilient.

Conclusion:

Conclusion: No bones about it (see what I did there?), well excluding your cheek and inner ear bones (you do know you have bones in your ears right?), the Aftershokz Bluez 2 are a good buy. Even if you have to pay full retail price, but who does that. They have performed well for me so far and will most likely become my daily driver (replacing the original Bluez) for working out and running, assuming I don’t prove the sweat-proof claims inaccurate.

This will be another down and dirty type of review. It will be based in real world terms, not fancy marketing hype. Ready, because here we go.

As background information: I workout a lot, I sweat profusely and I have shorted out at least a dozen other headsets in my pursuit of relatively sweat-proof earphones to use while I run, lift, and bike. As with any review it will be biased based on how I use the device. I will try to point out the good, the bad and the weird. Just know that your mileage may vary.

If you are unfamiliar The Bluebud X headset is Jaybirds latest and smallest Bluetooth headset that is “sweat-proof” .http://www.jaybirdgear.com/bluebuds-x-bluetooth-headphones/

Good:

Connectivity: The Bluebud X (known as the bbx from here on out) implement a feature called SignalPlus its jaybird’s term not mine. Basically SignalPlus is some crazy new innovation that helps you enjoy clear stutter free sound on your headset. I’m not sure of the actual mechanism behind this voodoo but I can tell you it works. With several of my previous headsets if you placed your phone on the wrong side of the receiver you would get janky, yes that’s my technical term for it, reception. Audible would play but you would be subject to stuttered audio, slight drops in clarity, and overall unacceptable function until you positioned the phone in a more desirable location, relative to the headset. I have put my phone in my left and right pockets, in my hydropack, in an armband on both sides of my body and even in a metal locker 20-30 feet away. Every place I have put it the headset performed great. Crystal clear audio in all the different scenarios. Pairing them is a breeze, you just hold down the power button and “Jenna” the on device voice system tells you that she is looking for devices. When you paired she’ll let you know that too. The bbx headset can be paired to multiple devices ( I have mine paired to my Note3, my Surface Tablet, my iPad, and my Dish receiver)

Battery life: The bbx headset is advertised as having 8 hours of battery life. Gain they deliver I gave them a full charge and put them through not 8 but 9.25 hours of operation (at 75% volume) while working out. I bet if I had the volume a bit lower they would have gone longer. When the charge was about out you get a warning tone, about 20 minutes before they die. Typically I workout about 8-10 hours a week and only having to charge my headset once a week is great.

Charging: The bbx headset comes with a standard micro USB connector cable for charging them up. I plugged mine into the charger for my phone and let them sit for a couple of hours. The charging light changes from red to green when they are ready to go. To be honest I don’t know how long they actually take to charge because I was doing other things and wasn’t monitoring them that closely.

Sound Quality: The bbx headset is a Bluetooth headset and therefore is a lossy audio connection. Various factors such as compression and packet loss can make most Bluetooth headsets audio performance be less than stellar. I’m happy to say that Jaybird has done a great job in this regard. They call it Shift. It’s basically some sort of tweaking that they have done to the native SBC codec that Bluetooth uses. They also doe some audio magic to eliminate white noise in the headset so as to cut down on what they call listener fatigue. I can say that these little ear buds deliver great sound. Clear highs and mid-range, deep bass and little to no inherent hiss, once you get them fitted properly.

Voice Quality: I have had no complaints for voice quality with the bbx headset but to be honest, I have only used them for voice a couple of times. People say they can hear me just fine, and the sound quality is excellent, when they are worn in the first position. Not so much in the “advanced” position, which happens to be the one that works best for me. The first position is with the cord draped down behind your head loosely and the audio controls on the right side of your noggin. The advanced position is with the audio controls on your left side behind your ear with the cords going up over the top of your ear. To be fair they point out this fact in the user manual (yes I read it). The advanced fit is for people who are more concerned with fit during intense workouts and less about taking calls.

The Fit: The bbx headset, like most these days, comes with 3 sets of ear cushions to fit a wider variety of ear canal sizes. Unlike a lot of other headsets they also come with these little wings that you can attach to the headset to help secure the earphones in your ears. The wings fit into the natural curve of your outer ear to lock the buds in place and keep them from falling out. They work as advertised. I have always had an issue with ear-buds falling out; I can report that this is no longer a concern for me. Finding the right ear cushion and wing combination takes some trial and error but it’s well worth the 15 or so minutes of switching things around to find the proper size combination.

Sweat-proofness: As I mentioned at the beginning, I have killed a lot of headsets.  In the time that I have had the bbx headset, it has been deluged with lots of sweat. You may think that you sweat a lot but let me tell you in a single workout session I can sweat out 5-7 pounds of liquid. I know this because I have weighed my clothing pre and post workout. To date they have survived 15 workouts ranging from 2 – 3 hours each and they are still working great. There is no telltale evidence of damage, they are working great.

BAD:

Price: The one thing that will keep some people from even considering this headset is price. They come in at $169.99 which is a bit steep. I justified the cost by adding up the amount of money I have spent on replacing the S9 and S10 headsets. Each of those headsets was $40-80 plus $5 or so in shipping to send in the dead ones and get them replaced with new ones. If we go with the $40 dollar price for each pair plus the 4 times I had to send each dead set back were looking at $60s buck per headset or $120 bucks I had wasted on them. Add in the cost of both of my Plantronics backbeat headsets at $60 apiece and I have spent about $240 on my previous headsets. If these last 2-3 years It will have been worth the extra upfront costs.

Warranty: If you look at the jaybird site you will see that they promote their “Lifetime” sweatproof warranty and think wow that’s awesome. I know I sure did, right up until I looked a little closer and that lifetime is considered 2-3 years. The lifetime that they talk about is the battery lifetime, not the typical as long as you own them lifetime. Now to be reasonable in 2-3 years I, and likely anyone else will have found something newer and better to buy but still, they shouldn’t call it a lifetime warranty if it really isn’t.

Conclusion: Overall I would say if you’re looking for the a headset that is small, lightweight and can stand being in the wettest of conditions these are the buds you’re looking for. If you can look past the shady warranty claim and don’t mind shelling out a few extra bucks up front. In my opinion the “GOOD” heavily outweigh the “BAD” so take the plunge and get the headset that is the official sweatproof training headset of the US Triathlon team.
