https://plus.google.com/109050673263339225216 Francesco Cravero : The "soccer" as they call it is a clear growth movement, from all points of view, increase the followers...
The "soccer" as they call it is a clear growth movement, from all points of view, increase the followers, increase practitioners, increase young people who prefer to sport with more tradition in the States as hockey, baseball, football. And to say are the dati.Insomma, a real exploit, media and sportivo.e not completely random. Between 12 and 17 years the passion for football has achieved that for baseball.

Within a few years, the "soccer" could reach the popularity of the main sports practiced in the United States. And why not, in a few decades, perhaps, might even supplant a superstar like baseball, in the hearts of Americans. He is convinced Dave Brett Wasser, one of the leading football experts in North America, a former collaborator of the Soccer Blog on the New York Times, as well as owner of the broader video archive of football matches made in the USA. A heritage of almost unobtainable images - DaveBrett.com listed on its web site - even higher than the official archives of the US Soccer Hall of Fame and the US Soccer Federation, making it one of the highest in the world authority on the subject, as well as a "historical memory "football stars and stripes. Or rather, a "historic football", as he likes to call.

In the seventies there was the phenomenon of the New York Cosmos: we played Pele, Beckenbauer, Best, Cruyff, Eusebio, in addition to Giorgio Chinaglia

Originally from New York, he grew up on bread and New York Cosmos admiring the legendary exploits of Giorgio Chinaglia and companions, Wasser, who now lives in Texas, following football for decades. Ie since the soccer, in the States, she did not know him almost none of his countrymen. Yet there was a time, in the 70s, when it seemed that something was changing, with the birth of Nasl - North American Soccer League, and the arrival of the likes of Pele names, Beckenbauer, Best, Cruyff, Eusebio in addition to the same Long John Chinaglia. "In New York, in the 70s, everyone was talking of the Cosmos, an unprecedented phenomenon. They were becoming news. For many fans, today, it is hard to imagine the success that the team and the sport riscuotevano in the city, both from the media point of view, that the influx of public meetings. The Cosmos dragged the professional league Nasl, and the games were broadcast on television. It was a novelty, for the United States. "
Years very well even narrated from the book (Gavin Newsham) and documentary (by Paul Crowder and John Dower) of 2006 "Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos", dedicated to the phenomenon of the Cosmos and the impact they had on the Big Apple and America. And the Italian Chinaglia was among the main protagonists of the first attempt of the football landing in the US. "While many chose the United States because at the end of his career, he arrived in New York at age 29, in 1976, when he was still in great shape and at the top of his game. Not by chance is the player who has scored more in the US football history, "recalls Wasser. "Chinaglia had incredibly positive influence for the spread of the sport in America. Of course, Pele had upon himself all the media attention, because of the name but it was on with the age and her best was now behind him. The real star was Chinaglia: it was undoubtedly the best player of the whole North American Soccer League. Many did not get along with him, they said it was intractable, but I know him, and it turned out very nice. "
The real star was Chinaglia: it was undoubtedly the best player of the whole North American Soccer League and was incredibly positive influence for the dissemination of football in the USA

Despite the initial boom of the Seventies, the soccer but was not a lucky life, across the Atlantic. "In the early 80s, the interest of the people dropped drastically. It is difficult to explain why, probably due to a number of different factors. I myself, I'm a big fan, I stopped following the Nasl, and with me, at that time, millions of young people who preferred to turn our gaze to other sports, "admits Dave Brett Wasser. In those years, he decided to try another Italian adventure in North America, the former Juventus Roberto Bettega who, at age 33, he agreed to wear the jersey of Toronto Blizzard Canada for two seasons. "I remember it well. Bettega came here in 1983, in the last years of the North American Soccer League life. "

For the North American football after the shipwreck of the professional league in 1984 and the failure to hold the World Cup in 1986 - strongly desired by leaders of the US, but obtained from Mexico - he followed about a decade of limbo. Then return, overwhelmingly, on the scene. First with the World Cup USA 94, were (unfortunately) still clearly etched in the minds of Italian fans. So, for the birth of the MLS or Major League Soccer, the league started quietly and soared over the years, first with personalities such as Roberto Donadoni, Walter Zenga and Carlos Valderrama, so with David Beckham generation, Thierry Henry and local talent like Landon Donovan, up to the current reality, with names of the likes of Kaka, Andrea Pirlo, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, David Villa, not to mention the explosive Sebastian Giovinco and the last arrived, Didier Drogba, maybe not much to say on the field, but it certainly is able to fill stadiums. A business on the rise, which still has room for maneuver. "The good news is that football is back in America, and that is growing before their eyes," says Wasser. "The World Cup, in 1994, had a huge impact, and with it the performance of the US national team, can give some surprises: only four years earlier, in Italy 90, losing 1-0 instead of 10- 0 favored, with the Azzurri had been considered a success here in the States. The World Cup USA '94 were able to show the football to a new generation of Americans, thus creating a strong following, which over the years has led to the current results. "

In addition to the interest for soccer, parallel increased considerably the bond of the people the US with its national, last year starred in a social phenomenon never seen before, even with Hollywood celebrities and the entertainment world, and the same President Barack Obama pledged to cheer for the darlings of a sport that Americans, famously, had in the past repeatedly overlooked. Not to mention the women, who have long dominated and who recently won the World Cup.

The US is now ready to become a world power in football, where so far have collected few results? "It is difficult to make predictions. There have been many improvements, and every four years the World Cup, there are huge expectations, but every time we are disappointed. In 1994, in front of the National Lalas and his companions, the commentators were saying "in twenty years we will win the World Cup": after twenty years, and this has not happened, "he says with irony. "There is a large youth sector, with a nursery that is a huge potential for the future: should carry out any work in the way the sport is taught to new generations, to change the training model, open the doors to all the boys . He also said the national coach Jurgen Klinsmann. With time, things will improve. " With or without the former Germany coach, however. "Klinsmann like, really care about the future of football in America and has done much in this direction. However, the results at the World Cup have been similar to those of other coaches, and he made a big mistake to leave out Team Landon Donovan, more for personal reasons than for technical reasons. "
"Football is followed by the youth, baseball elders: if I had to choose today would prefer to own a team of Major League Soccer, compared to a Major League Baseball"

A critical question that many are placed on both sides of the ocean, is: is there space for soccer in the United States? Or continue to be less competitive of the "big four", namely NFL football, NBA basketball, MLB baseball and hockey NHL? Dave Brett Wasser is optimistic. "Things are changing. Today there is already talk of "big five", and many consider the football like the other disciplines. Of course, never be able to challenge the NFL: football is the sport most loved and followed of America, produces unmatched revenue. However, soccer is the most popular hockey can already be considered, given the number of people who go to the stadium to follow him. Important, however, in addition to the influx in the arenas, they bet on television viewing: are those that make the difference. Today are not exceptional, but are gradually improving. There have been many steps forward, and it is quite promising the appeal of the sport on so-called "millennials", the generation born at the turn of the 90s and the first decade of 2000, in which he is in second place after football . Football overlook the younger generation, while those who currently follows baseball is on average get older. You can not make any predictions, but if I had to choose, I'd rather be today owner of a team of Major League Soccer, compared to a Major League Baseball. "
From the point of view of the game and overall quality of attention, there are those who wonder if the Major League Soccer is ready, in a few years, to become addictive and followed like noble championships and famous such as the Premier League, La Liga or Serie A. But Wasser, on this aspect, it seems to be a bit 'skeptical. "We can not know what will be the popularity of the MLS in a few years. The ratings, first of all, should increase significantly, because the revenues derived from this aspect, in addition to any sponsorships, and of course the professional league should have available considerable resources to afford top players, "notes.

Not only old stars, then. "The traditional problem is the arrival of older players, often at the end of his career, as Didier Drogba. They still need other stars. In this respect, it is positive the involvement of a city like New York, which has two professional teams and is a square on the safe media appeal. The same goes for Miami, where Beckham is working on a team, it will have an effective impact to attract good players. In addition, the MLS has made a great choice to introduce the salary cap, the salary cap to avoid repeating the mistakes made by Nasl, where a few rich owners concentrated in a few All-Star teams, like the Cosmos. Europe, too, should consider this solution, otherwise the summit will always find the usual 4:00 to 5:00 richest teams, with higher budgets and possibilities than any other. "

In short, the States really start to believe it. And if on Russian soil, historic rival geo-politics of the USA, in 2018 where he played the next World Cup, came the opportunity to dream really big?

Post-action report:

Pride was all right. We stayed for about two hours (!) of the parade. It was nice to see trans representation, though I would have liked more. Met a couple nice people as we were standing around.

The Crew-Impact match was incredibly meh. 0-0 draw, lackadaisical play, even from Didier Drogba.

The highlight was, of course, Origins. Though we only had a few hours (from about 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM) and we only hit the exhibition/dealer room and the main game room, I picked up some loots courtesy of +LeVar Bouyer, and I got to meet four amazing people:

+Gary N. Mengle, whom I would love to play strategy games with;

+Cam Banks, who demo'd Feng Shui 2nd Edition for us! A fantastic 15 minutes of action;

+Jerry Grayson, who is a fountain of wisdom;

+Kenneth Hite, for whom I have long-lasting respect and I love to listen to talking about Stuff.

I missed my chance to meet +Brie Sheldon, but that's because she was being awesome and gaming. Next year, for sure!

Overall it was an amazing Saturday, and though my body is in agony from the hips down, I feel much better than I did earlier in the week.

When it became a World Heritage site in 1982, Selous Game Reserve was home to one of the most significant concentrations of elephants, black rhinos, African wild dogs, cheetahs, giraffes, hippopotamuses and crocodiles in Africa.

Now it has lost 90% of its elephants and nearly all of its critically endangered black rhinos to poachers.
