Meeting The Labyrinth's Fire
Gloria Gutchall

"Magic." Jareth said, turning to his 6 year old sister, "do you see that blaze, over there?" He pointed out the window of the castle to a trail of smoke in the sky, eminating from a patch of light deep in the Labyrinth's jungle. Magic, or Jareica, looked out at it.
"Yea....."
"That's the only spot in the Labyrinth that I haven't shown you yet."
"It's so big, though...."
"True, and it changes on my whim. But we've been through most of the main points already, and the more deadly ones I've already shown you. This one's a bit more..... wild, I should say." Her eyes glinted with curiosity.
"Wild?" He nodded.
"Indeed. Not only is it wild, but it's a bit dangerous too. It gains your trust and then...." he made a slitting notion across his throat. She gasped.
"What a horrible system!"
"It keeps intruders out, though." He lead her away from the window. "However, the system fears me, so I will show you it tommorow. When that time comes I'd like you to wait outside the entrance to the jungle. Do you remember where that is?" Magic nodded. "Good. 11 o'clock should be when you should be there to wait for me." He shooed her off. "On that note, off to bed with you." And so she went.

********
~~~~*****THE NEXT DAY*****~~~~
"Bogdangit this place is creepy..." Jareica muttered to herself. Inside the jungle of the Labyrinth, strange animals and other creatures called out. Birds cawed and cried out, as if in pain. Gaurd Goblins made even stranger noises from deep within it's resseses.
"Jareth told me to wait here." She said "Noooo distractions."
After a while, the jungles noises became even creepier than before, and she was getting a little nervous. So she started to hum a random tune.
Then something echoed her tune back, and she jumped. Looking behind her, she saw nothing.
"Phew, that was- WHAAAAA!!!!!" Right in front of her was a goblin unlike any she had ever seen! And she had seen a lot.
He was a bit short, shorter than her at least, with fur on his head, around his neck, and on his wrists and ankles. It almost looked like fire, colored red, orange, and yellow. The rest of him was pink and bare. He had a long pink tail, with said fur in a poof at the end.
"Ey little lady, there's no need to scream!" He said, holding up his hands. "I just didn't see you... what are you doing here anyway?"
"I was, uh, just-"
"You lost or somethin?"
"N-noooo...." He brightened up.
"Then how bout I help you get through this place. But first, would you like to go to a party?" Magic looked back out past him.
"But my brother said-"
"Dun worry, we'll get you back before he comes to get ya." She shook her head.
"Um, no thank you..."
"C'mon little lady! You'll be fine!" He grinned, a mouth full of teeth, some sharp, some nubbed. Magic sighed.
"Fine. I'll go to your party." He jumped a foot in the air with happiness.
"Ahmazing!" He grabbed her hand and dragged her into the jungle. "C'mon then!"
She was able to get one last fleeting glimpse of the jungle's entrance before she was dragged off.
She was dragged through the jungle for what seemed like an hour.
"Where exactly are we going?" Magic asked. Her chaperone turned his head to face her.
"We party only at the jungle's heart, little lady! That's the best place to get wild!" A lightbulb clicked in her head.
Wild......
Jareth had said something about the system he was going to show her being wild...
This must be the system. Jareica thought nervously. I better watch my gaurd.
After a little more dragging, he lead her to a clearing, with a big bonfire in the middle of it.
"Ey guys! We gotta partygoer!" He turned around. "What's your name, kid?"
"M-magic." She didn't mention her real name, for fear of being killed to fast.
"Her name's Magic!" He called out.
Soon, more of his kind came out. Some skinny, some fat, tall, and short. She glanced around.
"These are all my brothers!" He said, then turned to a fat one. "Start a beat, Jeddy!" The fat one saluted, then struck up a tune.
"Ey lady!" One called out. "Do ya sing and dance?" Jareica nodded.
"It's what I'm famous for back at home." She started tapping her toes to the beat, as they started to sing:
When the sun goes down (when the sun goes down)
And the bats are back to bed (and the bats are back)
The brothers come 'round (the brothers come 'round)
I get out of my dirty bed (my dirty bed)
I shake my pretty little head (I shake my pretty little head)
Tap my pretty little feet (tap my pretty little feet)
Feeling brighter than sunlight (oh)
Louder than thunder (oh)
Bouncing like a yo-yo, wooh (oh)
She danced to the beat, swinging her arms and moving like she was in a jazz song. The tune they played was rather catchy, after all.
"Ey, lookit er go!" One called out.
"She's good!"
"Keepit up, little lady!" Her chaperone called out.
She smiled, enjoying this. Jareth had always said she was good.
The song continued:
Don't got no problems (no problems)
Ain't got no suitcase (no suitcase)
Ain't got no clothes to worry about (no clothes to worry about)
Ain't got no real estate or jewelry or gold mines to hang me up.
She started to sway as she danced.
I just throw in my hand (throw in my hand)
With the chilliest bunch in the land (in the land)
They don't look much (oh)
They sure chilly chilly (oh)
They positively glow glow, huh (oh)
Chilly down with the fire gang
Think small with the fire gang (It's the only way)
Bad hep with the fire gang (a smile a day keeps the doctor away)
When your thing gets wild
Chilly down
So the Fire Gang's what they're called. She thought to herself. To her suprise, she saw one of them take off his head! Another took off his feet, and yet another pulled his legs off! She nearly lost concentration of dancing while watching.
"I didn't know you guys could do that!"
"We can!" the one with no legs shouted. "They make great sports events!"
Magic danced on.
Chilly down with the fire gang (Hey, I'm a wild child)
Act tall with the fire gang (whoo, walk tall)
Good times, bad food (yeah)
When your thing gets wild
Chilly down, chilly down
Jareica noticed that they had taken off more body parts and were hitting their brother's body parts. It was something she wasn't used to seeing.
"Mind if I take this next verse?" She called out, still dancing. There were cries of "Yea!" And "Take it away, little lady! Ha ha ha!" So she did.
Drive you crazy, really lazy, eye rollin', funky strollin', ball playin'
Hip swayin', trouble makin', booty shakin', tripping, passing, jumping
Bouncing, drivin', stylin', creeping, pouncing, shoutin', screamin'
Double dealin', rockin', rollin', and a reelin'
With the mackin' sex appealin'.
Can you dig our groovy feelin'?
"She's gottit!" Her chaperone fire gang member cried happily. "She's done gottit!" Jareica smiled and laughed as they all sang.
So when things get too tough (get too tough)
And your chin is dragging on the ground (dragging on the ground)
And even down looks up (down looks up)
Bad luck heh heh,
We can show you a good time (show you a good time)
And we don't charge nothin' (nothin' at all)
Just strut your nasty stuff,
Wiggle in the middle yeh
Get the town talkin', fire gang
Chilly down with the fire gang (think small)
Think small with the fire gang
Bad hep with the fire gang (hey, listen up)
When your thing gets wild
Chilly down
Chilly down with the fire gang (hey, shake your pretty little head)
Think small with the fire gang (tap your pretty little feet)
Good times, bad food (come on, come on)
When your thing gets wild
Chilly down
Chilly down with the fire gang (wooh)
Think small with the fire gang
Bad hep with the fire gang
The lyrics were done, but the song continued, and the little goblin princess enjoyed all of it. That is, untill a glitter-filled 'BAMF!!!!' canceled it all out.
"What have you done with my sister!?" Jareth roared, his face alight with fury. "If you tried to take her head off, I SWEAR that I will toss you into the Bog of Eternal stench faster than you can take off your body parts to avoid it!!!"
The Fire Gang jumped a foot in the air and ran off to hide, shouting, "Not the bog!", "Have mercy, Goblin King! We didn't do anything!" , and "We didn't know she was your sister!!!" . Magic ran up to her brother and grabbed his hand.
"Jareth stop it! I'm fine!" He looked down at her, releived to see she still had her head on.
"What were you doing here?!"
"T-they said that it wouldn't be long..... it was just a party...... I didn't know they were going to try to take off my head! Please don't bog them! We were only having fun!" Jareth looked out at the not very well hidden Fire Gang members.
"Is this true?"
Magic's chaperone gang member poked his head out from behind a rock.
"Ya your highness." He said. "She looked scared, so I tried ta calm her down by taking her here." He smiled. "She's a wonderful singer n dancer, by ta way." Magic gave him a look of thanks. Jaretn sighed and put his face into his hand.
"Very well then. But DON'T do it again. Or you will have me to worry about." He nodded.
"N Magic!" the goblin called out.
"Yea?"
"If ya ever get stuck down here, don't hesitate to look for me. Just say my name."
"Which is...?" He smiled.
"It's Dejase." She nodded.
"Very well then, Dejase." Jareth grabbed his sister's hand.
"Come on Jareica. Let's get out of here." They turned around to leave.
As they did, Magic turned around a little and gave her newfound friends a small wave goodbye, which they returned.
As soon as they were out of sight, Jareth said, "Well, at least you got to see my wild system today." He smiled down at her. "And even though you didn't know about how they take off your head, I'm proud that you didn't let your gaurd down." Jareica beamed at him.
"Really? You're proud of me?" He nodded.
"Now let's head home."
In a swirl of his glitter and her silver smoke, they were out of the Labyrinth and back in the castle.
Since the Old World of Darkness 20th Anniversary editions started coming out, I've been intrigued enough by the old games to buy and reread them, and start getting excited about them again. With Vampire and Werewolf out of the way, and work starting on Mage 20, it made me think about the Mage game I ran for ages, back in the day.
I was digging through some old e-mails, and found an essay I apparently wrote to my players to help them play the game in a way that I was running it. To be fair, this was about 10 years ago, and before I was exposed to the indy-credo of engaging players as co-GMs, which, frankly is pretty hard to do in a WoD game with the amount of meta plot to work through...
But still, I found the essay charming in it's own way, and it made me excited to read the new Mage book whenever it comes out. Anyway - here's that essay in full, with nothing edited out, not even the embarrassing parts.
-----
This is a three-part essay intended to serve as an introduction to the cosmology and history behind Mage: The Ascension for this game. Please give this at least a cursory glance as it will help you play the game better and we will click in terms of how the system and the universe works.
Please e-mail me privately any concerns you might have.
Part 1:
Magic
I, Saif, have studied the Newtonian Laws. I know that if I push something, a force acts on the object I am pushing. With this fact in mind, I can make some conclusions about my environment. So, for example, when I kick a soccer ball, I know it will accelerate in the opposite direction until it slows due to air friction and gravity and will finally come to a complete stop. These Things Are True.
Alexander, Saif's Hermetic character, has studied the Thothian Tarot Deck. He knows that the universal symbols used to create this deck are connected with instances of everyday life. So, when he links a seemingly random element of some event to these symbols, an intrinsic connection occurs. Thus, when he reads the deck, he can make some other conclusions about the event. These Things Are True.
I do not believe in the Newtonian Laws of Physics because they help me get home when I drive my car (which is based on these laws). I believe in the Newtonian Laws of Physics because they are true – no matter what, wherever I go, it’s always the same, always.
Alexander does not believe in the Thothian Deck because the cards help him make decisions about events that could possibly endanger his life. He believes in the deck because it is true – no matter what, whatever he does, it’s always the same, always.
The Laws of Science (or as they are known in modern science, Theories), are like Laws (or Theories) of Magic. They are reasonably sound conclusions that have been declared based on extensive observation and testing by experts in the field. Any basic physics, chemistry, biology, or mathematics textbook will initiate you into those basic laws of Science. Aleister Crowley and (half a century later) Isaac Bonewits have done the same for magic. They make for good, basic reading.
However, where all scientists around the world use (more or less) planetary standards for several things (IEEE, ANSI, etc.), magic has no central governing board (well, it does, but we’ll get to that). Which is why, the many Traditions of magic have grown up the way they are.
A Hermetic, Virtual Adept, and Son of Ether education is a scientific approach to magic. A Celestial Chorus, Dreamspeaker, or Verbena education is almost theosophical. These differences are one of the weaknesses among the Council. At the same time, it is what gives their Craft its humanity.
And when I say education, I mean it. I see the initiation of members into the Council as being a very deliberate molding of their character to the methodology of the particular Tradition. This makes complete sense - you want your members to believe that their way of magic is the best. You want them to recruit members into their Tradition themselves. You want them to become better Magi and the more devotion and understanding they gain in their own art, the more they improve. Thus the whole “Alex doesn’t need to believe in the symbolism of the Thothian deck, he intrinsically does” schpiel from above, because after he’s through being trained, he doesn’t need to think about it. He just does it. He knows. Like you and I know turning a steering wheel causes a car to turn. It’s been hammered into us forever.
Until the Council of Nine was formed, this diversity of thought and practice was close to anarchy, with hundreds of crafts doing things their own way tied together only by vague commonalities in their practice. When the nine traditions met at the close of the fifteenth century, the Order of Hermes proposed the nine universal spheres as the underlying principal behind the universe. The ease of their distribution appealed, and where it did not, the dissidents were bribed or lobbied into agreement. This is the “Planetary standard” for magic I mentioned earlier. However, this did not change the way that all the Traditions did magic - it just focused it and created bridges between them and gave them a common vocabulary (and even that’s up for debate). And that’s the way it is until now.
Each Tradition is unique in its approach to magic - from the way they deal with spirits to the way they think about death. What is trivial to one is paramount to another. What is sacrilege to one is holy to another. This can all be reflected through the characters approach to his craft. Magic is drama; textured, rich and detailed. That’s what the game should reflect. Magic is also called “The Craft” or “The Art” for a reason. Humanity reflects in magic where as reason reflects in science. It should feel that way.
Part 2:
Focus / Foci
Following along with the previous discussion, we come to differentiating how each Tradition does magic. The most obvious way of seeing this is to study the tools that they use in performing this magic.
The way Mage is written, each sphere is assigned a particular Focus and the mage uses that focus to direct the spell. For example, a Verbena character might devote an athamé (a sacred knife or sword) to the Sphere of Forces and carve runes of the earth with it to cause a minor tremor. Which is all well and good, but using one focus for the same sphere gets tedious and sometimes becomes a stretch to use it appropriately for every spell (using a sword for elemental magic is appropriate, but trying to float a book across the room with a sword seems cumbersome).
So, I have adopted an “infinite foci” concept, which allows appropriate spells to use appropriate foci. A mage might use water, a staff, crystals, a plant and runes all for the same sphere if the spells warrant them. (For example, if used in the sphere of Life, the water could be used for a body cleansing spell, the crystals for a body diagnosis, the staff for causing injury, the plant for healing wounds, and runes for protection).
This creates a rich tapestry of spells and foci for the mage and also creates a more “traditional” idea of magic where characters can go foraging for unique and rare items to help in casting powerful magics.
The trick here is to keep within paradigm. It’s fine for a member of the Cult of Ecstasy to cultivate and raise energy through an extended pub-crawl but a Hermetic will have a very difficult time relating the experience with the magic. The lines are drawn among the traditions for a reason. Now, there is a common theme among Mage PCs to make characters that are “enlightened” enough to see that the magic is a tool and that their Will is the thing causing the magic to occur. “By my will, so it is done,” and all that. That’s fine. However, not at the cost of the training and work that Traditions put into their pupils. I feel defeated even making this argument because the “iconoclass” to “standard social member” ratio of most PCs tends to be skewed as a rule towards the iconoclass, but I feel better for having said it.
I have no problems with people wanting to play towards gaining independence from their tools - that is the right of all true Magi. But that path is difficult and wroth with pain, blood, and hardship. Not just in terms of “dropping Foci” as you go along, but of paying for each step down the line with a bit of sanity, a bit of your soul. I make the path tremendously more difficult than the game actually does, but I feel it is richer for it.
The following is a list of foci broken out by tradition and sphere to give players a starting idea of how to build their spells dramatically.
The Akashic Brotherhood
Martial Arts, weapons, meditation, gardening, prayer, the elements, scrolls, precious metals
The Celestial Chorus
Meditation, candles, prayer, high ritual, water, holy books, sacred artifacts, symbols
The Cult of Ecstasy
Drugs, dance, music, alcohol, art, sex, poetry, conversations, road trips
The Dreamspeakers
Drums, masks, chanting, runes, bones, the elements, herbs, totems, sacrifice, fasting, vision quests
The Euthanatos
Weapons, meditation, high ritual, ash, bones, sacrifices, games of chance, cloth, bindings,
languages, secrets, blood, symbols
The Order of Hermes
High ritual, languages, symbols, elements, weapons, meditation, grimoures, mathematics, jewelry, astrology
The Sons of Ether
Science, mathematics, mechanical or power tools, computers, mathematics, electricity, ether, measuring instruments, futuristic devices, vehicles, telephones
The Verbena
Herbs, trees, gardens, blood, high ritual, the gods and goddesses, bladed weapons, bones, weather, charms
The Virtual Adepts
Computers, electricity, light, video cameras, projectors, virtual reality rigs, futuristic devices
The Hollow Ones
Candles, costumes, makeup, insults, cats, weapons, any lucky/unlucky items, music, vehicles
The Orphans
Almost anything of personal significance - from a grandmother’s locket to an antique store toy
Part 3:
Paradox
The way the setting is written, Paradox is “Jiminy Cricket with a chainsaw.” Mage assumes a subjective reality - one that is bendable through an “enlightened” will and its tools. This is tremendously difficult metadata to come to grips with both in terms of running a game and in terms of believing a world as such. While subjectivity is tremendously powerful in terms of its effect on people socially and emotionally, in terms of objective hard science, it comes apart.
My approach to this cosmology differs from cannon thus: Magic and Science are two sides of the same coin, and both are still parts of the global consciousness.
Millions and millions of people still practice feng-shui, take their sick children to holy shrines rather than doctors, pray to elemental gods and pay tribute to priests and shaman. Secret societies flourish in the first world and chant their ancient rites nightly, churches toll their bells to summon the faithful even as pagan covens meet in stores and coffee shops to plan their next ritual, and darklings wander graveyards and abandoned houses in search of ghosts.
These things happen just as people unthinkingly flip lights on and off, step into elevators, and check their e-mails, all without ever recognizing the technology and science behind these acts. Robotics and artificial intelligence research accelerates while virtual reality takes another step towards perfection.
All of this makes magic and high science probable – so long as they fulfill the roles that the traditions and conventions have created for them. A spell is expected to take a long time, performed with the weight of history and generations of witches and warlocks behind it. These rotes and spells, when performed as instructed, have a high chance of success and create only a small chance for a reality backlash.
Paradox will seldom strike when characters act within their paradigm, and if it does, it will only be minor. However, when a mage decides to fling spells left and right with little concern for his training and lets his adrenalin get away with himself - that is when the Paradox Spirits will descend in numbers. This is what I meant earlier regarding the steps of enlightenment - they are wroth with blood and pain, and the disbelief of both science and magic is a vicious monster with poisonous teeth.
I realize some may see this as oblique and not entirely clear. I meant for it to be that way – I don’t want to show you my hand before the game begins.
The best way to avoid Paradox is to stay low-key, keep within your paradigm and perform your rotes as instructed. Reality is slow to wake from slumber but tends to be furious for loosing its sleep.
At what point did magic and psychic start to mean different things?
Psychic used to just be a more 'modern' way of saying/viewing magic. Now they seem to refer to different things, though outside of specific trappings and worldviews they sill seem to be the same thing.
I guess the question is why does psychic refer to scifi and magic to fantasy?
Ruqyah - Spiritual Healing
Ruqyah is commonly translated in English as "incantation" which carries a negative meaning, since the word incantation is usually associated with magic, spells, and witchcraft. However, Ruqyah in Islam is the recitation of Qur'an, seeking of refuge, remembrance and supplications that are used as a means of treating sicknesses and other problems.)
Ruqyah are of two types:
1) Ruqyah Ash Shar'eeya
2) Ruqyah Ash Shirkiyah
Ar-Ruqyah Ash Shar'eeyah : mentioned above, it has three conditions. Ibn Hajar (rahimuhullah) said there is a consensus on the using of Ruqyah if three conditions are met:
1) It must be with the speech of Allah (Qur'aan) and his names and attributes.
2) It must be in the Arabic language, or what is known to be its meaning in other languages.
3) To believe that Ruqyah has no benefit by itself, but the benefits are from Allah.
This type of Ruqyah is permissible and is the main subject of this topic.
Ar Ruqyah Ash Shirkiyah: this contradicts the conditions of Ruqyah Ash Shar'eeyah and has in it Shirk, associating partners with Allah. It leads a person to his destruction in this life and the next and increases calamities and sicknesses. This type of Ruqyah is prohibited, from the statement of the Prophet (saws) This type includes: Magic (whether learning, practicing, or teaching it), Fortune telling, Horoscopes, superstitious belief, and at-Tameemah ( charms and amulets).
Conditions of a person who treats with Ruqyah:
1) He must have the right belief in Allah (Based on Qur'aan, Sunnah, and keep away form Shirk, etc)
2) He must have sincerity in worshipping Allah and have a good intention in treating people
3) He must be firm in his obedience to Allah, and keep away form all that is forbidden
4) He must keep far away from all unlawful places and situations that canlead to what is forbidden, for example isolating himself with a female, etc.
5) He must guard the affairs of his patients and protect their secrets.
6) he must propagate the religion of Allah. Give the Patient advice and admontitions on the rights of Allah with regards to His commandments and prohibitions.
7) He should have knowledge about the affairs of the patient and sicknesses
8) He should have knowledge about the reality of Jinns (so as not to have them harm or threaten him while curing the patient)
Ibn Teen (Rahimuhullah) said:
"Treating with Muawwizaat, (Surah An-Naas, Al-Falaq, etc) and other forms, such as the names of Allah are medicine for the soul. So if these forms of treatment are on the tongueof the righteous, cure will be achieved bythe will of Allah."
Conditions for the person (patient) recieving Ruqyah:
1) He must have complete belief that harm and benefit are only from Allah.
2) He must be patient.
Conditions of Ruqyah Ash Shar'eeyah:
1) It must be with the speech of Allah, His names and attributes, or the speech of His Messenger (saws)
2) It must be in Arabic, or what is known to be its meaning in other languages.
3) To believe that verily Ruqyah has no benefit by itself, but the cure is from Allah.
4) Not to perform Ruqyah in a state of major impurity (junub) or in a place that is not permissible to perform ibadah i.e. graveyard, bathroom, etc.
The Reality of Magic
Definition of magic:
1) Magic is a knot or spell that has effects on the heart and body, It causes the heart or body to become sick, it can kill a person, it separates a man and his wife, and destroys family ties.
2) It is an incantation, knot, spell, and statement that are used in speeches, written or in actions that have an effect on the body, heart or intellect of a person without having direct contact with that person. It is a reality that kills, causes sickness, or prevents relationships (sexual) between a man and his wife, causes separation between them, or between families, places anger between families or friends, and causes a person to love those whom he hates in order to have a relationship and to be a source of spreading destruction.
Magic and its existence is confirmed by the Qur'an and Sunnah and is agreed upon by the scholars. It is a reality and a truth, and it affects a person only by Allah's will. There is a consensus among the scholars of Tafseer that Surah Al-Falaq was revealed because of Habeebbin Asum who did magic on the Prophet (saws)
Magic is an art that requires skill and proficiency from the one who performs it. It is a type of knowledge that has a foundation, methodology and principles. However, learning it is not permissible and it is kufr (disbelief) because it cannot be learned or practiced without requesting the help of Shaytan, worshipping him, and using forbidden and unlawful things. So it is kufr to learn or practice it.
Imam Ibn Hajar (rahimuhullah) said: " Magic is disbelief and learning it is kufr." Fath ul Bari 10/195
Imam An-Nawawi (rahimuhullah) said: " THe knowledge of magic is forbidden and it is among the major sins." Fatawa Ibn Baz 2/384
The Prophet (saws) included it among the major sins that destroy mankind and needs to be kept away from.
Ibn Qudaamah said: " teaching and learning magic is forbidden and there is no difference on the issue by the scholars." Al-Mughnee 8/151
The Punishment for Magicians:
The punishment for magicians is beheading. The Prophet (saws) said:
" The punishment for a magician is beheading."
Umar (RA) ordered all magicians to be killed in his time. This proves the severity of magic. So it is compulsory on us to keep away from magic and anything that is connected to it.
Treatment For Magic:
Treatment has two divisions:
1) What is taken as prevention form magic before it occurs:
a) Be mindful and perform all compulsory acts, and leave off all that is unlawful, and seek repentance form all evil deeds.
b) Constantly recite, contemplate, and act on the glorious Qur'an in which it becomes a daily routine.
c) Seek protection with supplications, seeking refuge and remembrances that are legislated by Allah and his messenger (saws)
1) From among those supplications are the following:
* " In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing is harmed on the Earth,nor in the Heavens, and He is the All-hearing, All-Knowing." 80/86
* Recite Ayah-tul-Kursy after every prayer, before sleeping, every morning,and every evening. As-Sahih Ibn Majah 2/332
* Recite the following three times in the mornings, evenings, and before sleeping
Surah Al-Ikhlaas, Al-Falaq, and An-Naas
2) One must be mindful and recite the remembrances and supplications of the mornings and evenings , as well as the remembrances and supplications after every prayer, before sleep, upon waking, before traveling etc.
d) Eat seven dates in the morning if its possible, as stated by the Prophet (saws)
" Whoever wakes up in the morning and eats seven Ajwah dates, (preferably from the boundaries of Madinah he will never be afflicted by poison nor magic. " Al Bukhari 10/247, Al Muslim 3/1617
The Second Division:
Treatment of Magic after it has occurred.
A ) First Type: Extract and destroy the magic- If the Magic is known, extracting and destroying it with permissible methods from the Qur'an and Sunnah, is the best and most suitable way of curing it.
B ) Second type: Ruqyah Ash-Shar'eeyah- from among them are:
1) Grind seven green Lote leaves, then pour water over it (enough to take a shower) and recite the following over it:
* I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed.
* SUrah Al-Faatihah
* Surah AL-Baqarah ayat 1-5
* Surah Al-Baqarah ayah 102
* Surah Al- Baqarah ayah 137
* Surah Al-Baqarah ayah 255 (ayat-ul-Kursy)
* Surah Al-Baqarah ayah 284-286
* Surah AL-Imraan, ayaat 1-5
* Surah Al-Imran, ayah 85
* Surah Al-an'aam, ayah 17
* Surah Al-A'raaf, Ayaat 54-56
* Surah Al-A'raaf, ayaat 117-122
* Surah Yunus, ayaat 79-82
* Surah Al-Israa ayah 82
* Suarah Al-Kahf, ayah 39
* Surah At-Taha, ayaay 65-69
* Surah Al-Mu'minoon, ayaat 115 118
* Surah Yaaseen, ayaat 1-9
* Surah As-Saafaat, ayaat 1-10
The Reality of the Evil Eye
The evil eye is a terrible affliction that afflicts mankind; it is the most widespread affliction in the world. Most people of this nation (Muslims) will die from it after what Allah has decreed. The Prophet (saws) aid:
" Most of those who will die from my nation after what Allah has decreed will be from the evil eye. " (Fath al-haqq al Mubeen, As-Sahih, 747)
The evil eye is a reality and a truth that a person needs to seek cure and protection from. The Prophet (saws) said : " The evil is true (reality)...." (Sahih Muslim, 2188)
It is permissible in Islam to seek Ruqyah for it, as Annas(radiallahu anh) narrated that the Prophet (saws) Made it an ease to take Ruqyah for fever and the evil eye. (Sahih Muslim 2197)
The evil eye is from two sources:
1) the evil eye from mankind
2) the evil eye from Jinn
The evil eye from mankind is confirmed in many narrations, as Abu Sated (radiallahu anh) said the Prophet (saws) said to seek refuge from jinn's and the evil eye from mankind. (At-tirmidhi, 2058)
As for evil eye from jinn's, it has been narrated ny Umm Salamah (radiallahu anhaa) that the Prophet (saws) saw in her house a slave girl and in her face was sa faa'ah. upon which the Prophet (saws) aid: " Seek Ruqyah for her, for verily she is afflicted with a look (evil eye). " (Al-Bukhari, 5739)
The scholars have said "As-sa-faa'ah" is the evil eye from Jinn's.
The reason for the evil eye is mostly because of envy (envy is to wish for the prevention of bounty for another person, even though the envier doesn't wish for this bounty). The reality of envy is the result of hatred and malice, which is the result of anger. ( Fath Al-Haq Al-Mubeen, 219)
The evil eye is like an arrow or spear that leaves the soul of the envier and goes to the person that is envied. It afflicts the person envied at times and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't afflict him, it is because of the protective methods he uses (whether supplications, seeking refuge, etc.) Also, when it doesn't. afflict him, the evil eye can return to the envier. ( The Medicine of the Prophet, 138)
What is an important fact to know is that the evil eye has no effect except by Allah's will. A man can give himself the evil eye and he can also give it to others. It can afflict someone without even being seen by the envier. For example, a blind man cannot see a person, but he can still cast the evil eye, or perhaps if the person is not around and they are described to the envier without being seen by him, it can afflict that person. It can also be afflicted by one being amazed at himself without being envious to himself or others. The evil eye can be done by anyone, even a loved one or a righteous person.
So, it is incumbent on each and every one of us to take the necessary precautions and try to prevent being affected by the evil eye, and to say the supplications and remembrance upon seeing something amazing and good. (Fath Al-Haq Al-Mubeen, 198)
The Treatment of the Evil Eye
There are categories of treatment for those afflicted with the evil eye.
The first category: Treatments before the evil eye occurs:
There are many types, which is as follows:
* Protect yourself and those whom you fear for from it with remembrances, supplications and seeking refuge that is in accordance with the Qur'an and Sunnah, as is mentioned in the first category for the treatment of magic.
* supplicate for whom you fear might be afflicted with it (if you see something within yourself, your wealth, your son, your brother or anything that amazes you) with blessing. From the statement of the Prophet (saws)
" If anyone says from his brother what amazes him, let him supplicate for him with blessings: This is what Allah wills, there is no strength except with Allah, O Allah bless him with it. "
* Guard anything or anyone that is attractive and may be a recipient of the evil eye. This means:
1) When a person has a beautiful family he should guard them by seeking protection from Allah for them, teaching and commanding them to do so, and also by dressing them properly not to expose their bodies or beauty so as not to be envied and affected by the evil eye. The Prophet (saws) used to seek protection for Hassan and Hussein by saying:
" I seek refuge for both of you in the perfect words of Allah and from every satan, vermin, and from every evil eye."
2) If someone has wealth, he should guard it by asking Allah to bless and protect it and be thankful to Allah.
3) If someone has good news and he knows people will envy him because of it, he should guard it by keeping it secret.
NOTE: If you know a person is famous for being envious and is known to affect people with the evil eye, it is important to keep away from him.he Second Category: Treatments after the affliction of the evil eye:
1) If the person who causes the evil eye is known, command him to make ablution (wudu) and then the afflicted person should shower with the water form the ablution. (sunan abu Dawud 419).
2) Recite as much as possible:
Surah Al Fatiha
Surah Al-Baqarah ayah 137
Surah An-Nisaa Ayah 54
Surah Al-Qalam ayah 51
Surah Al-Mulk ayah 3
Surah Al Ahqaaf ayah 31
Surah Al-Israa ayah 82
Surah Al-Fussilat ayah 44
Surah Yunus ayah 57
Surah at-Tawbah ayah 14
Surah Ash-Shu'araa ayah 80
Ayat al Kursy (ayah 255, surah Al Baqarah)
Surah Al Ikhlaas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas.
Recite the above ayah,along with all the authentic supplications that have been mentioned previously. then blow in the right hand and wipe over the place of pain, as has been stated in the second type of treatment for magic.
3) Recite over water and blow into it. It is better if the recitation is done over ZamZam or rain water. Then, the sick person should drink from it and pour the remainder over himself, or recite over olive oil and anoint his entire body with it.
The Third Category: implementing the necessary steps that keep away the evil eye from the envier's.
They are as follows:
1) Seek refuge in Allah form all evil.
2) Fear Allah and implement all of his commands and keep away from all that he prohibited. The Prophet (saws) said " Be mindful of Allah and he will protect you. " (Sahih at-Tirmidhi)
3) exercise patience to the envier, pardon him, do not fight him or complain about him and do not possess any evil inner feelings to harm him.
4) Have complete trust in Allah for whomever places his trust in Allah , Allah will be enough for him.
5) have no fear of the envier and do not keep pondering or thinking about him, this is a very beneficial treatment.
6) turn to Allah in sincerity and seek his pleasure in all things.
7) Seek repentance from all sins because they humiliate mankind.
Allah says: ' And whatever calamities befall you, it is because of what your own hands have earned, and He pardons much. " Surah Sh-Shu'araa, ayah 30
8) Give optional charity and do as much good as possible. for verily that has a great and amazing effect in combating evil form the envier.
9) Keep away from the fire of the envier, the oppressor, and those who afflict others, by being good to them. For every moment they increase in evil, oppression, and envy, you increase in being good to them. Give them advice, be merciful, and pardon them. This cannot be achieved easily except for one who has a great fortune from Allah.
10) have complete sincerity and belief in the unity of Allah, The Wise, The Judge. He is harmed by nothing and nothing benefits him. glory be to Him and He is above all things - (Ibn Qayyim 2/238-245)
“Welcome to Boingville” by Romeo Gittens is a charming and delightful romp through the town of Boingville, where all the clowns live. Little Christina’s birthday party was fun, but it got much more exciting when two clowns, Jingle and Jangle, arrived to add to the festivities. The two clowns did magic tricks, told lots of jokes, and, of course, made balloon animals for the children! The kids even got to have their faces painted by the clowns. But like all good things, the party had to come to an end. Christina’s friends went home, and Jingle and Jangle started packing up all their clown stuff so that they could go home too. Christina thanked them for coming, but was disappointed when they told her she could not come with them to see where they lived; it was against the rules. Would that stop Christina from figuring out a way to go with the clowns?
“Welcome to Boingville” is really a very well-written story for children of all ages to enjoy. The illustrations are very good, adding another dimension to the tale. The clown’s town is a magical place, where everything is vividly colored, cars fly, and streetlamps talk. But Christina couldn’t understand why all the clowns were following her as she walked along with Boing, who had made an exception to the rule and allowed Christina to visit. That is, she couldn’t understand until Boing informed her she was the first visitor ever to come to Boingville! Boing introduced her to the growing crowd of clowns, who all cheered and clapped for her. They were delighted to have their first visitor, and showed her a great time, until it was time for her to go home. Children of all ages will enjoy this book, as much as Christina enjoyed her visit to Boingville. This story is not intended to teach children any skills; instead, it is intended only to entertain, which it does quite well. I strongly recommend adding this book to your child’s library. After all, there’s a limit to how many ABC books a kid needs!
I've been thinking now, walking through my house, that my father did magic for me.
He painted magic windows and I put them on my big and empty white walls.
This is my favourite window - to crispy, bright and fresh Winter... Such a pity this light box doesn't do any justice to it - but when I pass by this painting my cheek gets frost-bitten, for just a second :)
