I miss David Rakoff.

Strange considering I just learned about his importance on This American Life.

Probably one of the best pieces of writing he ever did was centered around his increasing physical impairment during the last live show that they did.

A video put together by Chris Ware for our spring 2009 event "This American Life -- Live!" -- in which Ira Glass hosts an actual episode of the radio program, performed onstage by some of our favorite contributors. Dan Savage, Starlee Kine, and Mike Birbiglia told stories; David Rakoff and Dave Hill conducted a ‘special investigation. Plus, additional visuals by Arthur Jones, and a very special appearance by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! You'll be able to hear the episode online here: http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=379 The song in this video is "Eugene" by Andrew Bird. Animation by John Kuramoto. Permission to post this video has been granted by the contributors.

We all know that reading is a fundamental part of English studies. My own interests have always been a mixture of non-fiction and contemporary fiction (definitely not popular fiction), and each month I add 5-8 new books to my collection. While my studies have impacted on the amount of time I have available for casual reading, I haven't allowed it to impact on my book purchases. Listed below are the books I have bought since the beginning of this year, all of them eBooks. I have marked the books I am busy reading with a *, and you will note I haven't really managed much for the year so far.

Feel free to share what you are busy reading, or have read since the start of 2013 (our prescribed books don't count).

Fiction
Vampires in the Lemon Grove - Karen Russell
The Fault in Our Stars - John Green
Me and the Devil - Nick Tosches
Tenth of December - George Saunders
*The Silver Linings Playbook - Matthew Quick
*Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn
The Middlesteins - Jami Attenberg
The Age of Miracles - Karen Thompson Walker
The Round House - Louise Erdrich
The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving - Jonathan Evison

Non-Fiction
*Far From the Tree - Andrew Solomon
After Visiting Friends - Michael Hainey
Fraud - David Rakoff
In Praise of Messy Lives - Katie Roiphe
*Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People - Mahzarin R. Banaji & Anthony G. Green
The Center Cannot Hold - Elyn Saks
What Remains - Carole Radziwill
Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself - David Lipsky
Tiny Beautiful Things - Cheryl Strayed
Brain on Fire - Susannah Cahalan
The Ravenous Brain - Daniel Bor
